Mungo National Park: It lives up to the hype

📍 DESTINATION: Mungo National Park
🚙 WHERE: Mungo is within the UNESCO World Heritate Area covering the ancient Willandra Lakes - a fossil lake system fed by a now defunct tributatry of the Lachlan River. It's about 110km from Mildura, Victoria (but is in NSW).
❓❓ WHY: To see the famed Mungo Lunette formations (a highly eroded dune fringing the lake). To learn about Aboriginal connections to the region from 40,000 years ago to the present time. To explore the pastoral history of the area - the farming battlers who toiled away there in very hash conditions. To learn how the lakes formed and why they dried up!
📆 WHEN: Our visit was at the end of winter, coming into spring and it was a windy, but pleasant t-shirt type of day. We also arrived after one of the wettest years in a very long time - so everything had an uncharacteristically green tinge. Summer is brutally hot!
⏰ TIME SPENT: We just did a day trip - but there are camping areas, and accommodation in the converted shearer's quarters.
🛣 🚧 ROADS: Most of the drive out there is on unsealed roads - but they are generally in good condition (mostly). Suitable for 2WD. This can change quickly after rain. Check road conditions before you leave. Roads within the park are also generally goood - but some areas were closed, due to recent rain.
⛽FUEL: You will need a full tank. Nearest fuel is just outside Mildura, 110km away.
🍽FOOD AND DRINK: You must take all of your own food and drinks. There is nowhere to buy food out there. Lots of nice picnic areas.
🚻TOILETS: Yes, at the visitor's centre.
