The Mumbai Suburban Railway (colloquially called local trains or simply locals)[2] consists of exclusive inner suburban railway lines augmented by commuter rail on main lines serving outlying suburbs to serve the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Spread over 390 kilometres (240 mi),[3] the suburban railway operates 2,342 train services and carries more than 7.5 million commuters daily.[1] By annual ridership (2.64 billion), the Mumbai Suburban Railway is one of the busiest commuter rail systems in the world.[4] Trains run from 04:00 until 01:00, and some trains also run up to 02:30. It is the second largest suburban rail network in terms of route length after the Kolkata Suburban Railway.

    The solution to this isn't to build metros on the same route but upgrade the suburban network. Introduce CBTC signalling and new rolling stock to take frequencies from 16 TPH to 32+. Speed up the upgrades of 4 and 6 track upgrades for higher frequencies. Run higher capacity trains, including bi level. The peak demand on this network is 1.6 lakh passengers per hour. A heavy metro line can do 50,000 only.

    Real reason behind crowded trains is people from UP and Bihar comes to Mumbai to earn money in a large extent that is why trains are so crowded now as I travel daily from Mira road to Bandra I have seen 70 % of train population is UP people and rest 30% are Marathis , Gujrathi , marwadi ,punjabi etc until unless people will stop migrating to Mumbai, population of city is going to increased significantly and everyone has to suffer then.
