Mulwala Canal: A marvel of engineering and agriculture

🚙 DESTINATION: Mulwala Canal, the largest irrigation canal in the southern hemisphere.
📍WHERE: Southern Riverina region including the towns of Yarrawonga (Victoria) Mulwala, Berrigan and Deniliquin (NSW). The canal covers parts of various local government areas including Federation Council Edward River Council Berrigan Shire Council and Murrumbidgee Council .
👉🏾COUNTRY: The land upon which this irrigation scheme was built is significant to many Aborignal people. This includes Yorta Yorta, Pangerang,
Wamba Wamba, Perrepa Perrepa, Wiradjuri and others. Water holds particular cultural importance for traditional custodians.
❓WHY: Followers of this page could be forgiven for thinking I'm obsessed with water canals given some recent posts. It IS true to say I am fascinated by the tension that has always existed between the dry Australian continent, drought and water. It has shaped the history of European settlement, given rise to extraordinary engineering feats, and management of this vital resource continues to challenge legislators to this day.
👉WHO: Goulburn-Murray Water operates Yarrawonga Weir on behalf of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority . Murray Irrigation Limited runs the irrigation system made possible by the Mulwala Canal.
📅WHEN: This is an adventure you could do at any time. There are viewing areas around Yarrrawonga Weir, and many places to stop and take a look at the canal. You can also take a look at Lawson Syphons just outside Deniliquin.
🍴🥤FOOD: The twin tourist towns of Yarrawonga-Mulwala have plenty of places to eat, as does Deniliquin and many other towns of the Southern Riverina.
