Yaaaaaa, to late for that. An 04 v6 4x2 w/300k goes for $6k around me. I bought mine about 2 years ago and to say i got a smokin deal would be a crime. 02 SR5 TRD 4x4 tow package 192k, not a d**n thing wrong with it and as the cherry on top, spent its whole life in ARIZONA, $4,000 I could sell it within a day, even w/ 233k, for $6k or $7k. If you find a tundra for a good price, especially if its 4x4/v8/limited/TRD, buy that sucker. One of the very very few none "classic" vehicles that is actively appreciating in value.

you're kidding right? other car that are not cold is because the freon leak a little bit every year, if u want cold put some freon in there.

@@dangda-ww7de I think it may have to do with engine size and how much power the compressor leeches from the engine. I regularly drive 2 different 5.7 Tundras, one 2007 and one 2008. I used to daily a 2003 4.7 Tundra. After topping them all off with freon the newer 5.7s definitely got colder and got colder faster then the 4.7.

They have been making components lighter and smaller to meet strickter epa regulations so i wouldnt be surprised if the compressor of the tacoma was much eco/smaller

My truck spent time in the Nevada Dessert this year when I drove down to burning man and the A/C was freezing cold the whole time .

I'm a toyota technician and those 1st gen 4.7L tundra is the most reliable truck toyota ever built. Never seen anything really goes wrong with these truck with my 12 years working for Toyota. The transmission and engine is bullet proof. The engine block is cast iron and never leak or burn a drop of oil. If I was to choose a vehicle to drive all across country and knowing it will be reliable ..it will be the first gen tundra

Garage Topics I have an 01 Sequoia with close to 200k, it clearly had a hard life and “deferred maintenance” with previous owners. The guts and electronics are pretty much bulletproof. I lost one coil pack, 5 minute fix for $45. The interior and body is garbage. I guess you can’t have it all at this price.

My 2000 access cab limited drives like a dream with 115k on it. I did all the recommended “100k” jobs to it (six ball joints to include upper, lower, and toe rod ends, belt and water pump, bearing carrier and u joints, shocks and struts, plugs, ALL fluids, valve cover gaskets, tube seals, and grommets, and the two oil cooler seals, as well as replace brake pads and shoes, drums, rear brake pistons, upgraded to larger front brakes, also replaced all lights to LED, replaced window rain visors and rail caps, 10:43 and needed to replace radiator, master cylinder, and entire throttle body which included servo motor and both sensors and new gasket. With price of truck and all this done by myself it was still under 16k for it. It’s a 2WD and the only thing I wish it had was a damn diff locker which I can get from Eaton for around 800 (and whatever cost to install professionally and correctly). I plan and hope to keep this truck for a very very long time unless I find a super deal on an 05 or 06 dbl cab with a diff locker or a good LSD.

My 2000 Sr5 4.7L with 256K miles burns no oil, runs like new. I'll never ever sell this truck! You're not the first Toyota tech I've heard say this.

Just need to be careful of the catalytic converters clogging. Had that happen on my 04 and it blew compression on two cylinders at 194k. Had to get a new motor but it’s only got 30k on the block now (had 18k when I bought it.)

Bestia13 I’m not sure how long it was bad seeing as I bought the truck at 189k miles. Mechanic that did the replacement said too much back pressure could’ve made the cylinders drop since he didn’t find anything else wrong. Unfortunately I can do a good majority of Mechanicals on my trucks but getting that deep into a motor is out of a range of expertise. Once it gets down to dropping cylinders like that I unfortunately have to take the word of whatever mechanic I believe I trust

I felt the same way .... I bought a 2015 sport LONGBED 22k miles 4x4 Tacoma for$29,500 and hated it . I sold it after 1yr for $30,500 and bought a 2006 Tundra 2wd 130k miles for $6,500 . I couldn't be happier. I love the tundra 1st gen.

@@richarde1355 the plastic bed in the Tacoma makes it feel like a toy. The seats in the Tacoma suck ass and the truck rides like shit on long drives . The 1st gen tundra rides smooth like a Cadillac, comfy seats, feels like a solid truck .

I have a 2011crew cab trd tundra. Planned on getting a 01 but couldnt pass up the newer one and absolutely love it

I bought a ‘04 Tundra recently with 132k miles. Perfect frame no rust. Timing belt replaced at 95k. Was a daily driver for a Vietnam vet; drove 10k per year and garage kept. Perfect condition. 11 grand out the door; best decision car wise I made.

I recently bought a ‘02 Tundra with 148,000 miles and I love it.

my grandpa has an 03 with 75k miles. He lived 2 miles away from his small business and drove less than 5 miles a day

Just realized my 2015 nissan has more miles than my grandpas 2005 tundra

I've got a first gen Sequoia - basically the SUV version of your tundra. Hands down the best setup. I've got 35" tires and a lift and it still gets 15mpg.

Our 2004 tundra has 179,000 original, one owner, us. We changed time belt that’s it. Changed headlights today. Love ours. Will keep forever.

Great video, I agree 1st Gen Tundras are awesome for all around use. The 4.7l motor and the A340 transmission are extremely reliable if properly maintained.

I Love my ‘06 double cab. I really like the size.The new Tundras are just too big for me. The only thing I do not like about it is the turning radius- it is horrendous.’ I am a professional mechanic and we see these trucks with 3-400,000 miles often and they all still have the original powertrains.

The turning radius on the 2004 - 2006 double cab is why I got rid of mine. I absolutely loved the truck except for the turning radius. My 2013 5.7 has been outstanding and is a better tow vehicle.

Love my 06 4.7, only have done front suspension work at 220,000 miles. That back window is also great if you need to haul some longer lumber for short distances. Turns like a battleship though.

Great truck! I found a deal on a nice one, so didn't get all of the options I wanted...but you have to jump when you see something special. I got a 2003 Tundra Access Cab, 2wd, killer camper shell w/barn-doors...and only 35,000 miles. Had it 3 years now and am still under 60,000. Been the best truck ever!

I test drove a 2014 Tacoma yesterday and wasn't impressed. Now I'm in the market for an 06 Tundra, thanks for this video.

I love my Tacoma 2012 just like yours. Drove the new one and loved the interior but not the way it drove. I have 148,600 on mine I'm the only owner and haven't had a single problem with it. I won't let it go. Thx for making the video

For the most part it comes down to opinion it does come down to what you need. But I do agree with you. One big thing is the 4.7 in that tundra is one of Toyotas most reliable engine. So it probably one of the most top rated overall engines .

Bought myself a 2006 Tundra SR5 last year with 164K miles and came from California then brought over to Newfoundland Canada, Best feature of the truck is that back window coming down, Best purchased i've made so far!

I have an 06' Tundra that has criss crossed the country multiple times. Love the first generation Tundra, the new ones, especially the 12', are problem prone. Great vid!!

Get one if u can we have an 06 double cab with tss package, awesome truck love it, only 127k miles on it, thanks to it, it convinced me to get a 2019 doble cab so now we have 2 tundras but i still love driving the 06

I really like the size of the 1st gen Tundra. It's like a 3/4 size pickup that still has a nice look. I owned an 02 Tundra and I'm buying an 06 Tundra with the access cab. I like the full 4dr but I really don't have any need for it as I don't carry any passengers. I think you made a wise choice and I believe you will really enjoy your Tundra.

I have a 2005 tundra access cab and for me it’s the perfect size truck. Back seat is fine for our needs and the bed is big enough for mountain bikes! At the same time the entire truck fits in the garage with a foot to spare! Great trucks and video!

I have to agree, I have owned a 2006 for 13 or 14 years. Had very few problems, changed timing belt around 100k miles. Gas mileage is about 15 to 16 mpg. No rust, just a great size truck. It pulls our camp trailer with no problem. Really like this truck.

I have an 05 SR5 but have the sunroof. Love it. Have 224,000 miles and going strong

This was the video that convinced me to get a gen 1 tundra. Copped a 2005 Double Cab limited with 80k. During the chip shortage, got it for 23k -_-, but still cheaper than a Tacoma. I’ve been driving it for about 14 months and I’m in love with this truck! The V8 power alone makes it enjoyable to drive

@@efaciler2462 yes, it’s a lot of money, but a 2012 Tacoma with 70k miles was going for 38,000 at the time (during chip shortage). And I got it from the dealer. If I were to do it again, I’d go through FB marketplace

Good review, thanks. There must have been a sweet spot for cars in the mid to late 90’s to mid 2000’s; Toyota’s in particular.

I have a 2000 Tundra access cab set up for off road ! 35" tires and lockers. Best cheap reliable truck out there by far, and very capable off road !

I mean I've had the same 2004 double cab tundra for about 15 or so years amd I only just replaced the battery it came with from the factory, it's a great truck and is very reliable.

Bought my 2002 tundra access cab new. Still running it and enjoying it 22 years later. 138k miles on it.

I couldn't agree with everything you said more. I have an 05 Tundra with a few inches of lift and larger tires. I am currently at 300,000 miles and have had one axle bearing fail. It is one of the best trucks Toyota has made by far. I do understand that the next generation tundra has a smaller crew cab and a longer bed, just like yours, because so many people wanted the crew cab but still wanted at least a 6' bed. Great video.

The double cab is a foot longer than the Access cab. I like the size of the AC better and I don't carry people much. I have always preferred a 1G tundra over any Taco though.

The DC is a foot longer BUT the access cab an go up to two feet longer than the DC which means a lot for camper conversion or work truck on the road.

Mine has a production date of 10/99. She's 20 baby! Still turns heads it looks so good. Runs 100%.

All true! I just sold my Tacoma and bought a 2006 Tundra CrewCab, 4x4. the difference is very considerable. so much more comfortable for long trips, which is our main use of it.

Have a 2006 tundra double cab 4x4 original owner. only issues after 140k miles. . front rotors ,rear axle bearings, power steering leak, driver door latch, alternator replacement. Great truck

Thanks! If its your first vehicle, you cant go wrong with either truck. I left this out in the video, but I have owned a access cab 05 Tacoma and I liked that truck a lot - I just needed 4 doors otherwise I would have kept it.

You are spot-on with the first gen Tundra. I have a 2004 double cab four-wheel drive. I love it. But I do need to upgrade to a newer truck. I am opted to get a generation 2 Toyota Tacoma vs a generation 3 Toyota Tacoma or a newer Toyota Tundra because of the points that you mentioned in your video. By the way, I get 12 miles per gallon in my truck.

Wow, had no idea the back window went down. Pretty cool. I wonder if there are camper shells that seal against the cab making it a pass-thru.

Loving my '01 Tundra since 2003....It is refreshing to hear the common sense point about the size. I consider my '01. 4.7 V8, access cab the perfect size. I have never understood the "gigantic" truck concept.unless you are towing some very big loads and you have to have it.

You are spot on man. I sold a 2006 reg cab 4x4 tacoma for $12k (a completely reasonable number considering what else was on the market at the time nation wide). That truck had no options at all other than 4wd. I picked up a 2006 DC limited 4wd tundra for $1500 more. It had a few less miles. I have cruise control, power windows, double the doors and double the cylinders. I went from no options to all the options. Oh and don't hate on the wood grain. I have had it in my 4runner for 14 years. You will grow to love it.

Tacoma’s definitely have their place. However I recently switched from a 3rd gen 4runner for similar reasons. More power, more space, and I can fit in the garage again. However I’ve had a 4.0 second gen Tacoma and I loved it. However the tundras are more affordable and I was looking for a wider platform for my tent setup anyway. Pretty stoked myself!

I own a 06 Tundra SR5 and it has 4wd and its amazing truck. I have 204,000 miles on it and still runs great and its a pretty good offroader too. The thing im surpise about is the 1st gen tundras are very underrated

Garage Topics great video! the proportions of a 3rd gen tundra and ‘01 Silverado are closer than you’d think. Length is about the same and the I’m able to fit my ‘17 double cab into the same garage that I had to shoe-horn my ext cab Silverado into...mainly the way the upper portion of the tundra cab tapers inward ...which pulls-in the side mirrors. It’s also a shorter engine bay than an older Silverado.

My 06 dbl cab sr5 is a driveway queen, it only has 83,000 miles on it.

I have a 2005 tundra. I bought it in 2015 from the original owner with 37,000 miles on it. It wasn’t even broken in yet. It now has 93,000 miles on it and runs great. I love it.

Recently bought a 2019 F150 XLT. FAR superior truck, I no longer regret selling the Tundra. Especially since I’m a Michigander and it would have needed a new frame.

Love my 05 SR5 Tundra double cab. 2uz-fe is a champ. Put an ARB bumper on it ($400 on craigslist) and a snug top camper shell ($200 on craigslist). It is an amazing daily/trail/camper/tow rig. I bought mine from the original owner with 120k miles and a full service history. Paid just north of 12k for it 2 years ago. Has approx. 135k on it now and many more to come! Beats leasing or financing a $500/month Taco any day of the week!

I absolutely love the 1st gen Tundra. Great showing of what Japanese can create. Made in America too! Right in Texas. I have a 02 Access Cab for the wife and a 05 Double Cab for me . both limited, lifted, 34's, all the works. Bought 2 for the price of one new Tacoma

Love my '04 double cab! No VVTi, and only 4 speed automatic transmission, but it's a great truck! I'm looking at getting a much newer Tundra, but the double cab size sucks, and the crewmax box size sucks. I'll probably end up with a crewmax, but dammit I will sorely miss that extra 6" of box length. I wish they would bring back the first gen double cab proportions. She's perfect! Great video! I would do the same thing, ditch the Tacoma if you're gonna do some towing.

You would be surprised. I compared the exterior specs of the current tundra to the first gen(double cab) tundra, and the 1st gen is the same width, and actually about 2 inches longer than the current tundra.

Have a 2002 tundra with the extra cab. 330k runs like new. This has me think about upgrading to a 2006 with that double cab. Thanks for the info.

Love this vid! My dad bought a 2006 1st gen when I was in 4th grade. Now that I have my license I get to drive it to school everyday. I can’t go back to driving anything smaller. I wish to buy the truck from my dad and get him a new one once I’m successful in pursuing my career

I knew a guy that had 450k on his when the head gasket failed. It still ran, and a little head work would make it run again for a lot longer

I bought a 1995 Toyota ST5 extra cab about 25 years ago. Still have it. I love. Just a great full size 1/2 ton.

I love my 2005 DC 4wd. Bought it new and will keep it until the wheels fall off. Haha. Never had any issues, great reliable truck. Just hit 71k miles.. I take it the mountains for camping, skiing, hauling my family’s stuff. Have a topper that really makes it handy. Okay gas mileage. The truck rides nice- especially with Michelin tires.

Lots of really good points, but I just couldn’t part with my Tacoma. Especially with the manual trans option

Great video. I have a 2016 Tacoma 4x4 TRD double cab. When I first bought the truck, the shifting was horrible and I hated it. 50k miles later after a tranny remapping and changing those crappy Kevlar tires to Falken Wildpeak AT3w, it's like driving a whole different truck. Doesn't downshift up hills like before. Truly amazing now and with the better tires , rides way nicer. I avg 20 plus mpgs. It tows really well if you use the ECT power button. Tow 6400 lbs. With all that said....I love tundra too...but here in Rhode Island, they are all rotted.

My Taco 08 has 224k miles and I avg. 19.65 mpg just drove it 1000 miles this week cruising at 75 90 mph. Tundra 10 13 mpg bigger more for the bang. 3 rd gen Tacos drive good and smooth vs 2 nd gen. Two completely diffrent trucks Taco n Tundra and uses. As far as mpg on your taco. It's not broken in yet.

Tundras get better mileage than 10 to 13, lol.

I've got a 15 access cab long bed 4x4 inline 4 with camper shell roughly 20mpg quick fast. Have you seen the new Tundra with the 8ft beds or double cab?

Got an 01 access cab 4x4 SR5. 179k miles zero issues. Looking forward to hundreds of thousands more.

I have a 3rd gen tundra and I’d love to get my hands on a 1st gen.

There is no 3rd gen Tundra, at least not available yet

just change the timing belt every 80,000 miles That 4.7L engine can reach million miles easly 👌

Dealer said don't bother. They have never seen a belt failure -- I personally doubt that so I did mine at 120k. Have 210k now.

Replaced the timing belt on my "05 4Runner with the 4.7L engine at 180K. Gets 20mpg on the highway. I have an '05 Tundra 4.7L with 110K, hasn't had a thing wrong with it. Just drove it 1,800 miles at got just under 18mpg for the trip. Might think about doing the belt soon.

Jim Mac As a professional mechanic I routinely see these with original timing belts with over 150-200k. The ONLY time I have seen a broken timing belt on one of these was when someone went over the replacement interval on the second belt but had used a non oe belt the first time. I am sure it wouldn’t have broken if he had used factory parts. I do think the replacement interval is very cautious but I will still be replacing mine at the recommended intervals.

@@jimmac1953 That may be true but there's a silly water pump in there as well. I replaced the belt at 120k and the water pump was foaming pink stuff big time. Second replacement at 240k not so much and both times the belt looked almost new. I always buy the kits and replace pump, pulleys, tensioner, etc whenever I do mines.

i sold my 06 Tundra double, limited and bought 2015 tacoma same as yours but in white ! No regrets !

I have the same exact truck and I love it. They will go a mil miles if you take care of them. The drivetrain configuration on this vehicle is a highly reliable setup.

I love my 05. I've had it for lil over 6 years now. Mine had 100k miles whenever I bought it, now just shy of 180k and I'm having the typical issues that all of the first gens have. Going have to replace the steering rack very soon, + center support bearing & u joints. I have already done ball joints tie rod ends, suspension etc. I will say lifting & running wheel spacers as I have done causes premature wear to happen. Early summer I had to replace front an rear wheel bearings, that is no fun at all. I wish I would of bought the UCA that help accommodate for the lift I definitely feel like I wouldn't have had parts where as quickly as they did in the front end. End of the day though the truck is awesome I love it and plan on keeping it for many more years to come and hope to see it hit 300,000 miles. Good video dude

Sad to say my coworker just bought that new Tacoma, thankfully he hasn't asked my opinion on it.

So...since you've bought this Tundra and you're selling the Tacoma, does this mean you'll be posting some videos of modifications you're doing to the Tundra? I own a truck identical to this and would love to watch it evolve. I love my truck, had it for about 6 months now. Bought it with only 95k miles on it and I plan on keeping it a long time.

First truck was an 03 Tundra. Probably the best truck money could buy and they're still pretty incredible.

The first gen Tundras are such a perfect size and still kinda under the radar. Picked up an 01 Access Cab last year and love the fact that its wider than my Tacoma I had before it. Its shorter than the newer 4 door Tacomas too and still has a 6 foot bed! It was also sooo much cheaper than a Tacoma! Mine had 75,000 miles when I bought it for 9 grand! 4wd too!

What did you use to replace the radio unit? I want to replace the one in my 06.

My dad bought a Toyota Tundra with the access cab brand new back in 2003. He had it trouble free for about 220k miles before selling it. He now has a 2018 Toyota Tundra crewmax 1794 edition. It’s bad ass

I like my Tacoma because of the Standard Trans option. Love my 5MT!
