Muldrotha the Gravetide Commander Deck Tech

Ойындар

Muldrotha, the Gravetide is a really good commander. Probably the best out of Dominaria. You could just throw cards in a deck with her an be just fine. But Muldrotha needs some balance if you don't want to be frustrated when she eats a removal spell.

Hello Everyone! A lot of people are loving the Sultai Lands strategy that Muldrotha can support. I own a Tasigur Lands deck. Here is a video that features it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l2F3yLKLnK7MqbA.html I have not decided if I'm going to shift my personal deck to Muldrotha but if you are interested in seeing some land synergies you can certainly check out this deck tech and maybe meld the two strategies. Thanks for all the love.

Going to be blunt with this, I really don't like this card. It's absurdly powerful hell I'd say it easily is better than 95% of current commanders. It becomes far more broken when a shit ton of money it thrown at it, and prays on more casual metagames where people are not packing as much gravehate and fast turn 3-4 combo wins. That and the fact it has added blue make it soo much better than all other graveyard decks its disgusting. Hope it gets banned at my lgs anyone else feeling the same?

Zach Dennis Sidisi is a lot more creature focused, while Muldrotha plays more like a midrange-control deck with toolbox elements. I for instance play Muldrotha control ish with Contamination and Smokestack, but can win without her by keeping my opponents board empty of creatures while I continue to cast somethig mean. Jin-Gitaxias or Sheoldred for instance. @Jumbo Commander, you only slightly touched upon this, but Glacial Chasm is insane with Muldrotha. Keep re-casting it every few turns is seriously good. If you have Ramunap Excavator or Crucible out, creatures cannot damage you anymore. Lethal Vapors is also pretty hilarious in this deck

Actually, temur is pretty good for building budget, since it doesn't need expensive enablers (do not get me started on building mono-red), most big things can be easily substituted with viable alternatives (just look at the price difference between Ulvenwald Hydra and Primeval Titan), and it easily covers every permanent with budget removal. The only issue is tracking down the budget options, as it's hard to even hear about them. I remember more than once asking the price on a card that was perfect for my deck but I'd never heard of before and it being absolutely dirt cheap.

One permanent that cares about instants and sorceries I would like to mention for anyone building this deck: Scribe of the Mindful. Since you sacrifice it instead of getting an ETB trigger, it's there for you to recur without having to feed it through a sac outlet. Instead of going full-tilt spells, just including this one creature can grant you a ton of flexibility. It makes most of your tutors better, makes Villainous Wealth less of a bummer to mill, and can get you that clutch Beast Within or FoF or Splendid Reclamation whatever you really needed in the moment. The sacrifice trigger can also pop off at instant speed, making for some pretty incredible sequences at times. I built Muldrotha as Turbo Land because it's really fun to have access to three powerful colors in that strategy, not just green or even Golgari. But regardless of the direction you wanna go (e.g. I've seen some pretty Theros-heavy enchantress lists that are wild!), consider saving a slot for the humble Scribe.

Another hilariously fun combo with her as commander is to run Kokusho the evening star with blade of selves. If you can have an instant speed sac outlet like ashnod or viscera seer, you can slap everyone for 15-20 life per turn per player by attacking with kokusho and then sending him to the grave. If somehow you have parallel lives out that is likely a win the first turn you do all of this.

I can't speak for how well it functions, but I think recurring the enchantment Lunar Force every turn sounds like it could be fun. You can bluff with actual counter spells in hand, and opponents can call or fall for it as they choose, but this card WILL counter something, and if player 2 doesn't want to keep wasting cards it's up to player 3, and so on. Don't think about it as a counter spell. Think of it as discard that also forces your opponents to pay the cards mana cost, which is pretty dastardly if you ask me.

Get delirious, man. You will have no trouble getting and staying delirious if that's your goal. Especially with cards that have more than one type. Plus, even the strictest builds probably run a couple instants and sorceries, so that's two more types. Add a world enchantment and a tribal spell and those are your failsafes. Given how vital Muldrotha's graveyard is, is it worth putting ways to protect yourself into the deck? Most of the graveyard hate I run into and use myself are targeted, Bojuka Bog, Nihil Spellbomb, Rakdos Charm, etc. So something that grants you hexproof might be a key counter to these strategies. Similarly, I've seen a few lists that suggest Ground Seal, as a way to turn off graveyards while still leaving yours accessible.

There are s handful of ways to dodge commander tax in muldrotha, my favorite is just letting it go to the yard and reanimating it. As a good muldrotha should play reanimating to get around the 1 creature per turn limit. Special shout out to command beacon

I mean you just build value... set up your ramp and card draw like any other EDH deck, and allow yourself some redundant effects that help utilize the 'yard. Also, if you're a lands deck, the tax is basically never gonna get too high. Just sayin'.

I love to see that even though I went a very different direction with my build, which is sultai lands, we both came to the same conclusion about the rest of the meat of the deck. Like choosing Monastery Seige over Sultai Ascendancy because of the 2nd ability on Monastery Seige (which I have had to choose in several games now). Another great video!

I really like that strategy too. I have dabbled in some of those archetypes. My elenda the dusk rose is an aristocrats build and my slimefoot deck also has those themes. For death and taxes my personal Avacyn deck is all about the hate bears and board wipes. I love this style of deck and I'm thinking about combining them soon in a personal deck I'm excited about. I hope it works.

My current issues w/ Mothra are A: thinking i have too many instants/sorceries like my entombs, reanimates, jarads orders, i find myself losing them too often and i feel like i'm losing value B: I think she is too combo centric with a LED/phantasmal image/deadeye navigator and i prefer to say vanilla and not play combos. With that being said i think im going to revert my Muldaddy back into my Mimeoplasm deck but keep her in the 99. Seal of primordium btw has been great in my play testing so far and great for politics. Lets get us that Raff Capashen :) also i'll settle for your thoughts on Karlov as well great vid as always!

A: you're thinking about it wrong. Entomb, Jarads Order etc... get cards you wouldn't have otherwise. Their value is tied to the creature you get. You get Shriekmaw or Faceless Butcher or Sakura-Tribe Elder you WILL play them over and over and you get a ton of value from those cards. B: the version I built has no combo in it. It's pretty much control. Sadistic Hypnotist, Faceless Butcher, Merciless executioner, Seal of Doom, Deed, reclamation sage, seal of primordium. (no strip mine because no one would play with me if i did).

  • @emilysmith2965

Individually powerful cards are very important to making this deck work. You need a little bit of the setup cards, right, the cogs in the machine, but what would you actually like to see in your graveyard? I advocate really strongly for any creature that qualifies as an "army-in-a-can." Wolfbriar Elemental, Josu Vess, Kessig Cagebreakers, Rampaging Baloths, Avenger of Zendikar. Creatures that are better to sacrifice, like Wurmcoil Engine or Thragtusk (who's two bucks... how the mighty have fallen!). Lord of Extinction, if you've been collecting a long time and/or are made of money. Even something wacky like Meloku, the Clouded Mirror. Pick up some of your lands and play them again for landfall triggers. No matter what you're trying to do in the long game, it's good to have a handful of standalone threats, especially the ones that bring friends with them. Four or five of these can put a lot of staying power behind that first blush of quick value. Mill enough cards (threshold or better. Not kidding, doesn't have to be anywhere near 20) and you're likely to have a good mix of threats plus disruption in there. Play threats with extreme patience! Hold up mana for your on-board counters and self-saccing creatures. Play cares-about-yard clones like Body Double or the new Lazav, the Multifarious. And be aware that your 'yard might get ganked. Once in a while, it should, if your play group is remotely aware of what Muldrotha's text box says. If you have at least a handful of "army-in-a-can" threats, one sick topdeck could put you right back in the fight. Much love to the Sultai Brood out there, and thanks DJ for making such a thoughtful deck-tech for us!

    @emilysmith2965

    5 жыл бұрын

uhhhh YES. Yes, you have to pay mana. It's already such great value. They'd insta-ban it if it ALSO cheated your mana. There are a few different ways to chop off Muldrotha's legs while she's trying to stand up. Countering anything big she tries is one of them. Graveyard hate is the best way. But the third way, because she's so slow, is just hit her in the face, because she'll definitely die. This is what makes those cheap recursible spells so important. Weenie aggro really struggles against Dead Weight every turn. Robots struggle against Seal of Primordium, Caustic Caterpillar, or Thrashing Brontodon. Keeping your gameplan going with ramp is important. Because Muldrotha is busted good... but no, she does not make spells free. ;) Whatever your budget or "casual-ness" is, I completely recommend Muldrotha. Some of the cards DJ suggests in this video are stupid expensive. Lion's Eye Diamond? I'll take a Wayfarer's Bauble, thanks. Fetchlands? Especially the enemy-color ones? Sub in Evolving Wilds and some Panoramas. Strip Mine? Don't spend hundreds of dollars on that junk. Tectonic Edge and Ghost Quarter can help you plenty. Reanimation spells can add up in price if you go for too many. Tortured Existence is a dollar. For one extra black mana, you can swap a creature card in your hand for one in your bin, basically ratcheting up your creature value to two a turn instead of one. Don't shell out for Survival of the Fittest. Fauna Shaman is six or seven bucks, not cheap, but even a gold-bordered Survival is 18, and tournament-legal is over 100. So yeah, Muldrotha. Super powerful, absolutely worth brewing for at any budget and for any group. Does not make spells free. But if you've been collecting awhile, your deck might be close to free! :D

Pretty much. Also, using classic rot style etb, and etg effects and sacrifice outlets combined with Grave Pact, Dictate, and Butcher of Malakir have an immensely complementary effect. Redundancy such as running Meren and token makers make Muldrotha get nasty with doubling season and primal vigor. You also need Urborg and Cabal Coffers along with the Praetors to really make it click.
