This riba-system the prophet wanted to prohibit, it was clearly evil. Nowadays we do not sell people into slavery. Banks do not lend to people without a credit rating (poor people). But loan sharks and payroll lenders do, I would call this riba. This is the view of modernist scholars like Fazlur Rahman Malik and Abdullah Saeed.

Respectfully, its really frustrating hearing Muslims talk about how interest is Haram but don't offer any better alternatives. Usury is Haram , that's simple to see, but interest seems literally almost impossible to avoid. Is it really fair to equate the economic system of today (in most countries in the world but mainly the West) to the economic system of Arabia in the time of the Prophet (PBUH)? Has anyone considered that it's possible that the words interest and usury could have been conflated to mean the same thing (by the common person as well as possibly by the english translation of the Quran) when they are two different words with different meanings? If anyone can offer me one convincing reason as to why interest is Haram and offer a reasonable solution, that'd be great.

You are quite right to question the interest=riba assertion, lots of modernist scholars and knowlegable Muslims do as well (Fazlur Rahman Malik, Abdullah Saeed, Sheik Tantawi from Al-Azhar, Egypt). Unfortunately they are drowned out by those scholars who get paid to be on bank sharia boards and who populate organizations like AAOIFI. Riba is really about financial exploitation. Menk just asserts that interest=riba, and dont argue.

Very well said. usuary, I understand. But intrest which barely equals to inflation being haram does not make sense, so far no scholar has been able to properly explain this. If you understand modern system of economics, it does not equate to the interest taken back in the time when commodities were used as mode of exchange.

Assalamualaikum, First try to maintain minimum balance in your account, then the small interest credited should also be discarded. The interest is forbidden to all of mankind. So you can't give it to any human as it will cause you to bigger sin than just taking it. Burning cash will weaken your country economy, as Muslims we can't do bad to the country we live in even if it is not a Muslim country. Please buy meat and feed it to non livestock animals like dogs, crows and eagles. These animals are not accountable on akhira and men won't benefit from them. Please remember you can't feed riba to livestock that includes your guard dogs etc. Don't use in any way that benefits mankind. @@mlaeekkhan Brother we are discussing about the teachings of Islam. The definition is clear, the reply to people who call interest a form of business is very clearly discussed in Quran and Hadith. Fabricating your opinion into Islam is a major sin. My Prophet preferred to be a poor person. A successful business man but still lived a simple life. I can't dare to justify taking interest to wage war against Allah and Rasul Allah SAW to become rich. Why risk brother? Why do a sin that equals to Zina with own mother? Why have opinion if you really know who is true authority? Please brother don't say ur opinion out, even if the whole Muslim world starts taking interest it will not become halal rather more strongly suggest that Qayamat is near and many are entering the naar. If you have left the fold of Islam or so called modern Muslim this explanation has nothing to do with you. Haram takes out the power to rightly reason as shaitan will overcome them. So no big surprise if a group of interest taking people find their own ideas. Assalamualaikum.

You can say that for any other sin not just riba. I know more about islum then an avarage person and riba is the number one thing I disagree with. It doesn't hurts the poor. For my experience it mostly hurts rich people. But the biggest factor is how financially responsible they are. I know what goes into credit score. Your income has nothing to do with your credit score. The 2008 crash was caused because Micheal Burrly was giving high loans to financially irresponsible people. There is a movie on this it's called The Big Short. If you watch the movie they the people want to give BBB mortgages rather than AAA.

A modernist scholarly view is that riba is about exploitation and loan sharking, not about all interest. If you are not exploiting someone and the interest rate is fair and competitive, and you are not putting yourself in excessive debt that you cannot pay, then I do not see the problem. Nonethless you will find lots of neorevivalist scholars who say interest is riba and you have to use a mudaraba mortgage that pays interest in a sharia compliant way and is usually more expensive.

Scholars should stick to ethics, where the world surely needs more direction. Islamic finance does have something useful to say in its advocacy of simpler transactions in finance more closely tied to the real side of the economy and discouragement of excessive debt. If Islamic scholars really believe that too much consumer debt is wrong and banks are too highly leveraged, they should advocate on these issues to their politicians and regulators, rather than try to create a parallel more expensive system of finance for Muslims.
