    Good for you but many people can't afford a decent job and are suffering under the tyranny of the usurious capitalist system that allows paper toilet money made from interest and inflation. As well as the psychopaths who control our money is oppressing innocent Muslims all over the world especially the Palestinians.

    The following are some ways that Riba is different from Mortgage Interest: ~ With riba, the rich lender does not contribute to any business, he simply uses his money to grow his wealth. With mortgage, the rich lender (or bank) at least mandates the borrower to get an appraisal, inspection and home insurance. They spend time to review those docs too. Should they not be compensated for putting in their time to review documents that benefit the home and the borrower? ~ With real riba, the lender lends money, and he gets back money with extra. Its money for money plus extra. Or gold for gold plus extra. With mortgage, the bank never hands you the money. Instead they hand the money to the seller and then make an agreement with you to transfer the house to you for a higher price. Its basically a product for money, like a trade, but not money for money. ~ With mortgage, the borrower and lender each put up their own money to fund the purchase therefore both having a stake in the house, both legally and practically. This is like a business partnership with the bank. With riba loans, no such partnerships exists where both parties are tied to a commodity.

    I have great respect for Mufti and his views. He has helped me greatly in understanding the Quraan, and in understanding that the central theme of Islam is to believe in One God. But I really don't think he nor any scholars that have such a strong stance against interest make any sense in the current modern context. Umar RA, (who we all know was extremely close to the Prophet SAW and followed his every command) said that he wished the Prophet SAW had clarified more elements of Riba and what Riba constituted - if Umar RA said this, who is ANY scholar to be so confident about his view on the matter? My challenge to any scholar that promotes such a strong stance against interest is this : give us an alternative to live by, and don't let that piece of advice contain any hypocrisy whatsoever. If you are using paper money today, you are participating in an interest system. Simple as that. If you have an Islamic Bank account, that Islamic Bank borrows money from the country's Central Bank and pays it back via interest (known as the repo rate). So if interest is haraam, then how can Islamic banking be halaal if interest is clearly involved in the system? The fact of the matter is that some scholars (not Mufti here, just saying "some") unfortunately use scaremongering more than rational arguments and intelligent interpretations on the matter to provide a ruling. We need scholars who are educated from both a Quranic perspective, as well as a worldly perspective in order to provide such rulings. My dua is that Allah guides us all, and inspires us to do good, and forgives us for all our sins - Ameen.

    Your point that paper money is part of the interest system is correct. Please make note of the following Hadith: "ليأتين على الناس زمان لا يبقى أحد إلا أكل الربا، فإن لم يأكله أصابه من غباره" It's basically saying that there will come a time where there will be no one except that he will consume Riba, and those that do not consume it will be affected by its dust. Allahu a'lam we live in those times today. And fiat (paper) money plays a huge role in how we are affected by the dust of Riba. They're challenging times, and I don't claim to have a solution for everyone.

    We know well what it is, but we don’t know where it ends. Is it okay to make up for inflation? Some say yes. Others say no. How about extremely minute amounts? Or poor people? Some say yes, others say no. But all agree, that interest on any kind of loan or borrowing is 100% disputed. No one says otherwise. Interest on credit cards, all day loans, fully fit this definition. Which is what I assume you are talking about. Don’t go around criticizing scholars, when all your knowledge about interest comes from the very first Wikipedia page that you see on “Ribba”.

  • @zhamed9587

    @zhamed9587

    @@amirmohammed2932 Extremely minute amounts are prohibited, as per the Quran. This is consented upon, and not up for debate. For extremely poor people, it will depend on their situation. I heard of one person whom no one would rent him because he had a large family. So his only other option was to be left out on the street with this family. For individuals in dire situations like that, it may be permissible to make exceptions, but only after consulting with a trustworthy scholar who is familiar with their situation, and they are honestly in need.

    No, but my point was, that only these very small things are even looked at. The original commentator was criticizing the sheikh, saying “how could he know” I agree with you, that small amounts are prohibited, but the reason the person commented earlier, wasn’t for any of these details, it was for straight out usury and interest, which is 110% forbidden.

    I am wondering if it is possible to for Banks or government to increase tax rates proportionately for people availing loans. In this way the loan will be linked to percentage of profits/earnings instead of fixed interest which is Haram. And people availing loans, will have to additionally get their books audited by government or Banks.

    Sometimes banks pay you a very little interest (even in a cash account, not a margin account). This little interest is the legal permission that allows banks to lend your money without your consent (the famous “secondary money”). It is not your fault. You did not sign anything, and the bank devalues your capital.

    Muslimah - well I don't think most mortgage transactions conform to the type of Riba presented in the Qur'an and Hadith unless they are sub-prime loans. If the mortgage is the usual well regulated affair from a state regulated bank etc and the payments are affordable then this is unlikely to be a form of Riba. HSBC operate the Amanah system of lending to Muslims wishing to purchase a home, but it is merely interest via the back door on worse terms for the borrower. You choose. I don't believe bank interest is the same as Riba - go read my more lengthy comment elsewhere in the comments section.

    Interest is haram because it brings much harm to the people who part take in it. It is a means of transferring wealth from the poor to the rich, that is how unjust our economic system of today is. Not just that, foreign exchange currencies also work the same way, by enslaving other countries with lower exchange rates by exploiting them to work hard labour and the rich countries profit from it.

    Question: is interest today the same as ribba that used to be? Because today interest actually gets the poor to have more money to be able to make a bigger business or buy a house or make a investment that can increase this poor persons wealth. It’s very hard to grow today without interest.

    It doesn't help the poor at all. Maybe at a certain time in your life it can, but is it worth it? It's like making a deal with the devil. Interest helps the rich mainly. The rich benefit the most when using interest. Poor people pay the additional interest to make the rich, richer. The rich people punish the poor by enslaving them with a lifelong of additional interest payments, instead of just accepting the original price what was borrowed. Thats how I see it. Therefore this is why interest keeps people poor for most of their lives. These poor people have to live with constant threat, fear and stress to pay their debt off to loan sharks, banks, gangs, corporations etc or else their houses or possessions will be taken away from them. They could also get killed too, if you borrowed from gangsters and didn't pay them back on time. Basically, its haram for the wealthy rich person to use interest because it punishes the poor. Its haram for the poor person to take out loans because they are adding to the cycle of disaster, that keeps the machine going. Its better the avoid this mess. Why live your life with constant stress to make payments? This is why Allah hates it and why it's one of the most major sins in nearly all religions.

    Allah knows what interest does, He created this world and what’s in it. Even before HE created us, he knew what interest would do, yea it can “prosper societies and make people wealthy” but that’s the different type of wealth. It’s far from Halal wealth. And when Allah says something is wrong then it is wrong because His knowledge and wisdom is way higher than anyone else and He knows what’s good for his servants. I hope this helps

    star ajaz - read my comment elsewhere in the comments section. Essentially, bank interest is not the same as Riba - this is a misconception. Riba is defined as economic exploitation resulting in oppression. Use a well regulated bank for your financial needs and you should be okay. Do not feel guilty about working in one provided it is not committing economic Zullum (oppression). Fi Amanillah.
