Muddy Bottom - Osborne Brothers

A cut from KET's 1979 coverage of the McLain Family Band Family Festival in Berea, Kentucky; directed by my friend and former bandmate, Russ Farmer. With the Osborne Brothers absolutely killing it on "Muddy Bottom." I love the sproingy note Sonny plays at about 34 or 35 seconds in, as well as Bobby's improvised lyric about the girl he chased in "Berea after school." And . . . Russ Farmer was one of the Assistant Directors on this!

The great sproingy banjo note is at 0:32. This also has a fabulous half-solo by Bobby...fantastic tone and wonderful picking on his super-sounding mandolin.

At 1:21 is a cut from a different song. Sonny’s capo is on the 2nd fret for a song in A and Muddy Bottom is in G.

You're right! I had never noticed that, but evidently the editor(s) at KET slipped that in. . .

Doyle Lawson once address the question of why the formal dress for him and his band. I think the answer was something to the effect of if you hired a dr to perform surgery,, would you want him to arrive dressed in his best Dr clothes or in jeans and a t shirt. I've noticed lately at festivals the players are usually dress casual for the afternoon shows and formal for the evening shows.. modern Country male singers are mostly just slobs anymore

Hey Tom! I was wondering if anyone has the original prints? Not just the KET edited versions but the unedited? It would be an awesome gift to the bluegrass community to have it uploaded. Or if not the unedited version then the aired programs. Thanks for the upload.

I don't think even KET kept the original footage they shot for this; and usually there was some editing going on in their mobile truck, with producer/director Russ Farmer doing a live mix. At the time they also kept the isolated footage from six or more cameras, but I think it's long gone, since at that time KET would re-use the tape once the show had been finally edited and aired. You could check with Russ Farmer (he's on Facebook) to see if that's the case, as far as he knows...
