Mt Pirongia Overnight Hike | Bell and Tahuanui Tracks

An overnight hike up Mt Pirongia to Pahautea Hut starting at the Kaniwhaniwha Carpark on Limeworks Loop Road. I follow the Nikau Walk for about an hour to the Kaniwhaniwha Caves, where the Bell Track begins. The Bell Track is the longest summit track on Pirongia, at around 20km one way. Along the way, I pass the tallest native tree in New Zealand (a 66.5m tall kahikatea tree), the Central Clearing Campsite, and The Cone (the second highest point on Mt Pirongia). I wake to an amazing sunrise after a night alone in the 20 bed Pahautea Hut. From the hut, I follow the track to the summit (959m above sea level) and then follow the Tahuanui Track back to the Kaniwhaniwha Carpark. The Tahuanui Track is part of the Te Araroa trail.

I love how the two tracks I've watched you walk aren't like the touristy ones I've seen on KZread. Mum, 81, would love this

Yes I noticed there weren’t many videos on these when I was planning that trip! I can see why the Bell Track is less popular though with all the mud…

Thanks for inspiring me to follow your footsteps! The Bell track was great UNTIL the mud! I have never experienced anything like it…Tararua, Ruahine mud and even UK mud can’t compete! Early Feb and we haven’t had a huge amount of rain so I can’t understand why the section before Cone (and a bit after) was so horrendous. Oh well, good boot cleaning facilities at the excellent hut. Other than that it was a great circuit. Just be warned that the mud can be a real obstacle.

Thanks for watching! Yes that mud really was quite extreme near the top! At least the hut is great quality - shame there's no fire in it to dry things off with though!

Beautiful video. Do you need to book the hut for the over night stay.

Thanks for watching! Yes, you do need to book the hut through DOC's online booking system, which is about $10 a night.

Also, thank you for your videos. I'm moving back to NZ and can't wait to experience the stuff that was right in front of me, but I'd gone for big cities overseas instead

Awesome, there really is no place like NZ. I’m over in the UK now, so it’s good to see something different, but I’m not sure I like the size of the cities!
