MST3k 404 - Teenagers From Outer Space

Комедия

You found Teenagers From Outer Space. You know you can watch every full episode of MST3k at www.club-mst3k.com right?
When conflict arises over the plan to colonize Earth with cheap, easy to film lobsters, Derek the alien escapes to a nearby town and soon meets the friendly yet altogether too trusting Betty Morgan. Why doesn't his appearance cause any problems? Because he looks just like everyone else, and except for the gaffer tape on his turtleneck, Derek's dressed just like everyone else. Speaks English too. Kind of. He needs enough stuff explained to him to remind us all that, yes, he is an alien, because otherwise, you'd forget.

The music Night of the Living Dead used was from Teenagers from Outer Space, as it had passed into the public domain and was cheap to use. It's kind of remarkable how much better Romero and crew used it, though.

This is one of those movies, like Manos: The Hands of Fate, and the entire filmography of Ed Wood, and that of Coleman Francis, that exemplifies why I like the cult cinema/bad movie genre: You look into the story of the film, and you see the monumental effort made just to get it made, and you feel some of the energy and excitement that must have been felt: "Oh my God, we're actually making our own movie" Teenagers From Outer Space is silly, of course, but there's a level of earnestness in it that I simply adore. This was a perfect film for the Joel era. Mike and co. would have just torn it to shreds, and I don't think that would be fair.

It's made so heavily on the cheap (those lobsters...), but it doesn't feel insincere. There's a baseline competence here you don't find in the insufferable anti-cinema of "Manos," "Monster A-GoGo," and "Red Zone Cuba." It's more on the "Tormented" / "The Giant Gila Monster" level of MST3K fodder, where they're not "good" but not without real ambition and good-naturedness.

One of the better ones to be sure. Unlike so many MST movies it actually has a coherent story line and a few brief moments of tension, not to mention it is a b&w movie with 'teenage' in the title but doesn't include the obligatory horrific malt-shop-esque teen dancing or singing.

It's a shame really, it even has a strong and well paced 3-act structure -which is super rare with these films- but the fact that one of the primary threats is giant carnivorous lobster(s) really dampens the promising concept of livestock-monsters. Hell, I don't even mind the cheap effect so much, what I find unforgivable is how the monster looks like a lobster but nobody in the story acknowledges their resemblance! It's as though they actually don't HAVE lobsters on Earth.

  • @BluJean6692

***** or better yet they could have owned it by emphasizing/noticing the crustacean-ness instead of having the characters be like "gosh I don't know what that is but I've never seen anything like it!" Might've been a good opportunity for humor too, imagine how much better 1:08:08 would've been if the guy had said "a giant lobster" instead of "some kind of monster". (Come to think of it, since there's no real description of the monsters in the script it really could have been a total last-minute thing.)

I've never bothered to research it much, but I remember hearing that this was actually intended to be a artistic take on the B Movie medium at the time, which goes a long way in explaining how the story gets so goofy and serious so quickly. Am I the only one who crapped themselves during the scene when the bad alien is holding the guy up and having him explain how cars work?

This is on of the MST3K Classics! I love the way all the teenagers are in their 20 s and 30 s! And the most terrible monster in the Universe,is the Shadow of a Lobster ,being held against a screen! And the 1-liners are killer! "Looks like very OLD teenagers from outer space! " The absurdity is great( A stranger ,comes to town and is rented a room on the promise that he'll find work and be able to pay for it !) This was a big Drive-In hit because of the title and the star pseudo-gay heartthrob,

chloe rainbow unicorn Yeah, that's low budget movies for you. The thing that amused me when I saw it on DVD a few years back is that it uses the same royalty free music that "Night of the Living Dead" used. In fact, it must be popular music because there's an old western TV series my dad was watching awhile back that used the same music too. :)

Many film and TV makers back then(I don't know about now, but it can be said of KZread and other Internet video makers),especially low-budget ones relied on "library" music, or music composed and conducted by various composers for inclusion in music libraries like KPM out of Great Britain, that would then sell the music and the rights to use it to various production companies. For KZread videos and others like them, there are free music libraries like Incompetech that offer music pieces for use by individuals and groups that make them.

What a great episode! :D That "Torture Officer" must have been the inspiration for that scowling, bossy blue Eagle Muppet guy. How preposterously great was it when they got that communique from that skeleton??!! XD i don't know why, it was such a nonevent, but somehow that made me lol more than any gag in this episode. Derek really was an intergalactic dreamboat, despite that generous helping of ears. i'm still debating whether i found Betty hot or icky. But as she's likely 104 by now, the point is moot. It's just a matter of time before this movie title and plot finds it's way into a Misfits song. \m/ Well, i gotta go see a wizened old dude about renting a room. Live long and prosper. *\V/_*

It was a reference to how at the point in time they made this episode, most of these really obscure movies only got around by circulating bootleg VHS tapes at conventions and whatnot because they weren't available from any mainstream source.

I've seen this like four times now and every time I think the actual movie is better and better. It has a really interesting opening and kicks off with a scene that feels like the 2nd act of a better movie about a planet where people are raised in cubicles and separated from their families but one man finds a book with ancient truths in it and it triggers a moral awakening. When he sides against the dog-killers you're on his side right away!
