Such parental pairings are pretty common in elite schools. Everyone speaks differently in those schools, especially in selective programmes like Raffles Academy (for those who didn't just score in by virtue of die hard studying, but have more je ne nais quoi)... That's why we have to equalise the local education system so that average parents and kids aren't just focused on sweatshop like studying, but instead shift the focus to soft skills like critical thinking, articulation, etc.

But there is a very soft side to both of them. They seem very sweet.

Mrs Tharman is so smart, quick thinking, speaks so well and does a lot to help the marginalised and disadvantaged. She is an asset to her husband and will make an excellent First Lady.

I would like to see her on global stage speaking to other countries first ladies. I would be so proud of her representing SG.

Mrs Shanmugaratnam is of BOTH Japanese AND Chinese heritage. And SHE is not responsible for what Japan did to Singapore or any other country during and before WW2, because she may not have been born even at the time.

@@stevenlim9640 As much as I hated the military Japanese of WW2 and Ex President Abe, who supported 731 movement ~ I would choose to let go and let live= not all Japanese are evil doers. (I experienced in Japan, a Japanese restaurant; the owner/chef came and apologised to me, a stranger ~ basically, because he is ashamed of the Japanese WW2 history , simply because he knew that I am a Singaporean). To live is to learn and life needs to people who can contribute to Singapore.

A journalist should be able to pronounce "Shanmugaratnam" without difficulty. Incorrectly referring to them as "Mr and Mrs Tharman" (his first name) or worse in this video, as "Mr T"(!?) is not acceptable. Why is it so difficult to refer to them as Mr and Mrs Shanmugaratnam?

Shanmugaratnam is a patronym, not a true surname, ie that's Tharman's father's first name. Hence Mr and Mrs Tharman is right - that's what traditional Singapore media uses too

As a young fellow I did pupilage at an accounting firm. The boss will refer to me as Tamil boy. His own kind as Chetty boy. There were Brahmin boys and so on. Most preferred kind were "Jaffnas'....Tharman kind. Collectively the chinese referee to all dark skinned as "mangkalis". So relax. Google. Enjoy some history of early migrants from India . Almost 10 years ago we hardly mention race or religion. I think it is cyclical that racism will show its ugly head. With the new 4 million came "CECA" issues. My old class mates started introducing the word ". I was made to pay a price.

Ya sure. Resigning as active member of PAP to be eligible as a candidate for the President Election, Tharman has lost all my respect for him. COI (Conflict of Interest) will eventually ruin this country for sure. (Look at the 2 fellows at the Ridout saga, both of them get away scot free. Singapore Authority should include factor like "currently active member" of any Political Party are prohibited from participating as candidate for Presidential Election. I would suggest something like not active member or affiliated from any political party for the last 5 years at least from the day of application. How come no one in the incumbent gov or the so to speak independent Election Committee think like me?
