MRE Review: Menu No. 15 - Beef Enchilada
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Here's another MRE review. This one is menu number 15, Beef Enchilada from 2008. For something with with a Mexican vibe that includes beef enchilada and refried beans, this was surprisingly mild. Luckily, the included picante sauce, ground red pepper and cheese spread with jalapenos gave it a more spicy kick. Turns out to be a good choice for both those that like and don't like spicy foods! And the "Kreamsicle Cookies" were very tasty, with an orange flavor.

For items like the refried beans I love the "MRE key" - like a toothpaste squeezer-assist but sized for these pouches, helps get every last bit out.
These videos never bore me! Thank you for uploading sir! :)
Glad to see another video from you! As usual your video is excellent even thought the food didn't look great! Ha! Enjoyed your review, camera work and very good editing. Thank-you, Greg
Your videos double up as useful information and as a bonus it delivers ASMR qualities! . Bravo! :P
I just got this youtube account mostly to tell you I really love these videos and cannot wait to see more! I happened to just get MRE's for christmas mostly because these MRE videos intrusted me. Thanks!!
I like the fact that they continually change up the contents to keep things interesting (or at least as interesting as MREs can be anyway). Thanks for the information.
Another awesome MRE review, man!
ive only seen 2 of your video and tha is enough to know that your reviews are the best
Wow, I couldn't have said it better myself. I think a lot of people (understandably) see these things, compare them to what they'd choose to eat on a daily basis and say "Eewww gross." You've obviously gotten a greater appreciation of just what kinds of people and situations that MREs are designed for. Glad to hear it.
After I watched this review I had to dig one out and try it. I've been eating MRE's since about 1984 and I have to say this is the best one I've tried!
I love this channel because his voice calms me
love these you are my new fix since mrejap doesn't make vids anymore keep em up!
The return of MRE vids! YES
Thanks for the personal recollection Mike, and thank you for your service. I know what you mean too. I didn't think much about MREs for a few years after I got out. ...Then I started to wonder how they had changed and suddenly had a craving for them!
Thinking about joining up, thanks for giving me a look at what i might be putting down my throat!
I like the new format better, where you lay everything out rather than eating them one at a time. Still, good video.
Thank you very much for saying so JawsFan. I appreciate hearing that. I realize that these kinds of videos have a pretty narrow interest, so it's nice to know that there are those who actually get something out of them.
Yay you're back! :D
that made one moment that you had not put of video. Glad to re-examine another of them.
I am 14 years Old and a huge fan of survival and bushcraft. And i love MRE
Very true. A lot of people complain about the amount of sodium and other nutrients in MREs, but forget that they're not meant for sitting down to a nice dinner--they're designed for combat situations where you'd need to replenish a lot of energy and salt quickly. Never heard of the sniper salt trick by the way!
Your welcome. And I'm glad you're willing to give them a fair chance before judging them. Just keep in mind that they're not meant to be "fine dining" by any means. They're supposed to be something that can last for a long time in storage and be easily supplied to troops (or disaster victims as has also happened) to replenish nutrients and energy expelled in harsh or stressful environments. You still might not "like" the food, but you might get a better appreciation of it!
I always try to make sure to mix up the pouches before opening them to be sure they're relatively evenly heated through. While they were both pretty warm the heat didn't last too long and it was pretty cool by the time I finished up.
I've heard of people doing that, but have never done it myself. I really enjoy just kneading it and putting it right on the crackers or wheat snack bread, but that certainly is a good way to change things up and add variety to the taste of an entree.
There are tons of MREs that are amazing, my husband brings them home all the time, this how ever was not one of my favs but the buffalo chicken omg that was so yummy
Was a great video, nice job ;)
ive been watching all these MRE's and im getting hungry hahaha
Omg, am i dreaming ?! A new mre review ! :DD
one thing about high-tech stuff is, they have a very cool and neat packaging..
Yeah, I try to mention at least once in a while that these aren't designed to be eaten as a regular meal---that they're designed to replenish energy and nutrients soldiers burn up in the field. I've never been a fan of spicy food, but it is nice that the MREs started including the Tabasco sauce to give a little extra kick for those who need it. And I remember guys bringing along their own hot sauce too (especially in the older, blander MRE days!
I will make sure to look for this MRE at next weeks gun show.
Thank you Greg. I'm really appreciating all the (mostly) positive feedback that's already been posted about this vid. I'm no professional, but have done the best I can. I'm glad to know that there are people out there who are getting something out of them.
I would really love to try this and the tuna mre! There's just something to them that makes me want to eat them.
Glad to hear that. Thanks. Sorry that I haven't been able to review ALL of the menus.
Your welcome. I hope I will have some useful information for you. Some of the survival/camping sites do indeed have genuine MREs in addition to commercial freeze-dried camping food and commercial MREs.
Ah-ha, so you recognized the Ikea glass, huh? Gotta love it! And thank you.
Great video
It was a reply for destrownz732, I know you do an amazing job at replying on our comments. Especially when there are 3 comments with 3 replies on where you got the stuff. It must be a bit enoying typing Ebay all the time :p . I really like your channel, and as a subscriber I se these "Where do you even buy this...." type of comments all the time. That's why i asked destrownz732 if he had read the comments.
Very nice video. Now, I´am hungry.
I bet adding the cheese spread to the beans and enchilada was ON POINT! I call that main street in flavor town! I could eat a piece of cardboard with some of the cheese spread with jalapenos and ask for seconds! ;)
Yes, I do read almost al of them (and try to respond to as many as I can). Unfortunately as the subscribers have multiplied and the comments have piled up it's getting tough to answer every one.
oh and the cheese spread is AMAZING TOO lol
Cool. I hope you enjoy them. Which French one did you get?
Yes, these are designed to be one meal. Of course, if you're not particularly hungry and need to ration it out you could stretch it out longer (especially the ones that have a lot of snacks in them).
I think it's a great idea to try them out if you ever get the chance. They're not for everyone, but it's kind of nice to have an idea of something that our soldiers eat in the field. It's nothing big, but it's a bit of an experience.
Looks delicious.
I have not, but do have one and am hoping to try it soon. It seems like there's a lot of people who love that one, and a lot of people who absolutely hate it. It should be interesting!
Best MRE.
how does the FRH that you actually put the food into compare with the one that you wrap them up with? i have a couple of each and just wanted to know if there is much difference in the way they heat....thanks
Not a stupid question at all. I've been hoping to get around to making a video just about the FRH for anyone who has similar questions--just haven't gotten around to it yet. Basically the water sets off a chemical reaction with the iron, magnesium and sodium in the heating elements. I don't really understand all the science behind it, but i do know that it's a very convenient and effective way to heat up an MRE entree!
I would love to buy some of these...
Good question. They're not TOO bad, but it's obvious that they've been sitting in the pouch with the enchilada sauce for a few years.
what's the texture like with the tortilla bits in the enchilada? looks mushy and doughy. keep the reviews coming
Thank you!
Sorry it took so long. Filmed this one more than three months ago, but did't get around to editing it until now. Do not recognize Jerry Schultz's name. "Schultz" is actually a shortened version of my lat name.
Thank you for your service Jonathan. MREs certainly aren't anything "special" to the soldiers who have to eat them on a regular basis, but like you said, if it's an MRE or nothing, they can be pretty good. I've been making these videos mainly for people who might not be familiar with MREs and are curious about them.
One of life's great mysteries!
i know what you mean i cooked up the meatloaf for 15 mins the bottom 2" of the pouch was cold and the rest was warm/hot not good in a survival situation. i have 12 other mre's to test - will do one outside next time to see how they fair up. thanks for the video
Not sure if I'd call them one of my favorites, but I do have a bit of a sweet tooth and do enjoy most of the dessert components. The Kreamsicle Cookies certainly are tasty!
I liked it. It seems to be something that people either really like or hate.
You're welcome. The main reason I'm doing these videos is for people who might have heard of MREs, and are curious about them, but who have never had the opportunity to try one. I also hoped that it might be helpful for someone who might be enlisting to give them a heads up about what they can expect (at least what they can expect from MREs anyway). Hope it helps in some way if you do enlist!
Is is bad that I find your voice soothing
Sounds like you're ahead of the game! It's definitely a plus if, as someone interested in survival, you can say you love MREs. If/when it ever comes to having to eat them the people who always complain about them and rag on them will be very unhappy!
The cheese spread looks especially delicious, British Ration packs are much healthier, mostly tuna based meals with lots of pasta. I'd love this instead.
The chicken vegetable soup with the brownie is the best
Looks good
3:48 "ROCK OR SOMETHING" I find that to be funny for some reason. =)
well personaly i would like to eat some mres and i have found a site that i can buy from do you recomend any special ones for me maybe ? im thinking about menu 18 and 15 (and a french ration too)
Basically, an MRE is designed to give a soldier 1/3 of the nutrients and calories recommended for an active soldier on the field.
Tough to answer because I like most of them. I liked the chili and macaroni, and also the pork rib (probably because I also like McRibs). Not sure if those would count as my "favorites", but they're up there.
I suppose that enchiladas aren't really considered something that needs to be put on a tortilla (though I agree that I'd have probably preferred to have had them myself too). And you're exactly right about the sodium. These are definitely not designed to be something that an average person would eat on a regular basis. They are designed for people under stressful and exhausting conditions.
was the food hot or cold in places?
Civilian MREs generally have a little less stuff in them than the genuine ones. For instance, a Beef Enchilada one might not include the refried beans that this one had. The accessory packs usually have less in them too (no matches, no gum...). There's always a variety between brands, but that gives an idea of what might be missing. I've never seen a civilian MRE that didn't come with a spoon though.
nice video
I hope it's a good one. Enjoy!
pretty similar with british ration packs but not the same method of heating the food up and not alot of snacks is it just for one meal ?
I've never seen the Creamsicle Cookies before. What did they taste like, and are they included with any other MRE?

+HebrewHomie36 Yea for kreamsicle cookies
I don't know what kinds of stores are in southern Cal, but if you have any Army/Navy or surplus stores nearby you should be able to find some there. Otherwise you'd probably have to go online.
I really dig the military looking chow trays!
Yeah, I did actually. Though I'm not a big fan of spicy food, it was too bland even for me (especially the beans). But once I added some picante sauce and cheese sauce it was very good indeed!
GREAT idea! Someone should design one at Cafe Press.
it's an amazing thing!
I'm not really sure why they shrink wrap some of the MREs inside of the outer bag. It seems kind of unnecessary, since it's already sealed in a thick plastic bag. It seems to be a newer thing, as I don't recall seeing this done on older MREs.
Just tried the older version of this one from 2007. My dad brought them home from the base back then. I though it was very good the cheese spread was very tasty as well. Mine came with an oatmeal cookie which was good as well. Didnt try the refried beans.

Arby’s Season of Feasting. $4 or less only on the app or online. Available at the North Pole and all participating locations.
I know I might not know what I'm saying but I actually want to eat MRE just for the sake of it... been watching some of your vids and they look kind of tasty
How did you get ameriqual MRE'S? Also, What do you think the best MRE company is?
If you haven't had them before I'd definitely recommending trying one if you get the chance--just to be able to say you did. A lot of people have opinions on MREs based on what they've heard about them rather than based on experience. As far as which ones to get, I'd say try out something that you would want to eat normally. If you like spaghetti, try one of the pasta ones. If you like chicken, try one of the chicken-based ones...
I think that I"m going to try to make a video about where/how to buy MREs. It's the question that is constantly being asked. I've tried to answer it a number of times, but obviously everyone isn't going to see the answers in the comments. I'm no expert on the subject, but I will let everyone know what I know. Hopefully I'll be able to make the video soon.
No, I generally don't eat more than one or two a month. And that's actually a lot for me, because I'm trying to get these videos out. It takes me a while to eat and film one and then get it edited and posted on YT.
Were can I buy this in southern California
I've actually ate this one too. I got curious and got a few mres. I still have the spaghetti in meat sauce still
where do you get those in texas!
Ha! I can get these at the Commissary anytime I want!
Not a problem. Well, obviously that WOULD be a big problem, but it's not a problem for eating an MRE. While you couldn't make the drink mixes you can certainly eat all the food. "Mel, Ready to Eat" means it can be eaten right out of the bag. It's a nice thing to be able to heat it up, but it can be eaten cold too.
That actually looks like a filling meal.
Those cookies do look good.
Whoah packaged in Evansville, Indiana? Small world. (:
When I first got back into MREs quite a few years back I would eat one every so often. Now I pretty much only eat them when I'm making a video.
Was wondering how long it would take for someone to comment on the appearance of the main dishes! I certainly can't defend the look of the refried beans, but they do taste better than they look.
Where do you Buy space food and MRE's?
