Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

Haven’t even started the interview & already know it’s going to be a gem. I was blessed to see Mr. Mixx & The 2 Live crew a few times back in the 80’s. I used to jam the heck out Throw The ‘D’ & that entire first album when I shouldn’t have been. 😂😂😂 Salute!

Thanks for letting ppl know about Schoolly D being the first gangster style rapper. " P.S.K ? What does it mean" was different. Also Just Ice was another early gangster type pioneer rapper.

I was good friends with Chris aka Wongwon aka Fresh Kid Ice aka Chinaman ( R.I.P) we were stationed together at Scott AFB, IL. He formed a group called The Rock- On Crew with me and 2 other guys. When he went to March AFB, CA he came back to visit us at Scott and had some MIXX tapes which he let me dub. Mr.Mixx was doing some incredible mixes. One of the innovative things he did ( and this was around '85) was blend in some Dolemite / Rudy Ray Moore quotes in his mixes. I STILL have those tapes !!

Me being from The Bronx and being stationed out in the Midwest in the early to mid 80's one way we used to buy records back then was to look at the labels and see where the records were made. If they had a New York address on the label or just had a nice looking label on the vinyl we would take a chance and buy it. Sometimes you get a winner sometimes a dud. But those were some of the ways to buy records because no hip hop was being played on the radio out in Illinois.
