Sacrifice involves letting go or causing to lose that which you love and are greatly attached to. The closer the attachment the higher the sacrifice. It is not about killing some random person. It is what a person gives up for some promised benefit.

To sacrifice is nothing short of surrendering something or someone you love for another goal. Killing people randomly cannot in any way constitute a sacrifice. There must be a deep personal loss associated with a sacrifice to "justify" expectation" for a future reward. Eg, in the olden times, before Jesus arrived on the scene, sacrificing a lamb (and the lamb had to be of defined high quality) to atone for one's wrongs, hence the word "sacrificial lamb"! For the loss of the valued sacrificial lamb, one's wrongs/sins were washed away. Animal sacrifices were burnt (not for nyama choma!) to ashes to underline the loss.
