Did you know that since Mr. Brightside was released, there hasn’t been a time where it stopped being in the Top 100 charts in the UK? It’s kinda insane. Even just in 2016-2017, a random spurt of time after it’s been out for this long, it charted for 35 consecutive weeks! It’s remained relevant for so long. It’s so bizarre, but pretty damn impressive.

I always thought that he was Mr. Brightside because he was tolerating her cheating. Looking on the good side of "oh she loves me even if she goes out with others". And that's why he chokes on the albis and says "I've been doing just fine", he is pretending he is fine but he is not. He is jealous but loves her so much that he pretends this is not killing him. He wants it all, he wants to be the only one and tells himself that "it was only a kiss", like she tells him (and she says she doesnt know how did it end up like this), but yeah he forces himself to stay and keeps imagining her with others, paranoid, jealous and stuff. But that was how i understood.

I think the Mr. Brightside part of the song is like an alternate ego or conscience of Brandon telling him to open up his “eager eyes” which are trying their hardest to not see his girlfriend cheating. Yet Mr. Brightside is telling him to open his eyes and realize that it is happening. But I think these lyrics are pretty easy to understand, jealousy was pretty easy to pick up as a main topic for the song. Love these videos, I’m a total junkie for looking at lyrics more in depth!

I always interpreted the song as him finding his girlfriend cheating and the jealousy blinding him and making him kill her (I connect it to Jenny was a friend of mine), hence why he's "choking on his alibis" and the price he pays is going to jail. I think when he says "destiny is calling me, open up my eager eyes" is when he feels/decides to kill her.

To me when he says “open up my eager eyes! Cuz I’m mr.brightside” always felt like it meant that he wants to be aware that this is a serious situation but he is always so naive to notice that it’s better to let go instead of trying to find the brightside of a bad situation. I think this is what brightside means. Because even at the beginning he says “I’m coming out of my cage and I’ve been doing just fine “ meaning he is sucking it up and pretending everything is fine even though he is mad. “Gotta gotta be down because I want it all” meaning that he decided that being torn apart (down) by the event was just something that happened and he had to just let it pass by since relationship always have ups and downs (and he wanted it all, so that was just part of being in a relationship). Then “it was only a kiss, how did it end up like this” is him repeating the event in his head, that the girl probably told him “it was only a kiss” and him saying “how did it end up like this?” Brings up the fact that their relationship ended all because of that ONE kiss. And he goes on to say “it was only a kiss! It was only a kiss!!!” Because he can’t believe that it was just THAT that ruined everything.

At University of Michigan the stadium always does this song at the end of the 3rd quarter. It was confusing to me, as there really doesn't seem like there is a cited reasoning. So I checked into the lyrics. And that kind of made it more confusing. So I figured I would watch this video... And while the explanation makes perfect sense. It makes even less sense why a stadium full of people would sign this in unison at a football game. People are soooo weird....

In my opinion after years and years I mean, literally I was 14-year-old when I heard this song and I fell in love but of course I gave it my own meaning now as a 27 year old woman and have been through the things that I've been thru and I am 85% correct that I know exactly what the meaning is And I'm going explain what I think it is before this video even starts because I feel like I am right about this specific one it is hard to catch on too but after so long of watching it and being in that type of situation I know I know exactly what it means. The small unnoticeable details I just truly feel like there's no other way then what is actually going on but I guess we will see because I have not watched this video yet so let's get to it

Just discovered this looking for an explanation for "somebody told me" by the killers. I have always wondered what the story is about the ex boyfriend and girlfriend. Are they the same person, was he dating a masculine woman, was the other person's boyfriend feminine, is it all a giant metaphor, what does it all mean with such chaotic open-ended lyrics in such a memorable and catchy song.

Could U do praise the lord (da shine), Ik it’s not the most complex but it’s a good song I enjoy and I feel like a lot of rap bars fly over my head 😂 also it spreads the word of god which is amazing. Thanks for taking the time out of ur day to read this comment and have a good day 😃

I wished you would've touched on the word play in the first verse where he says "Now I'm going to bed, and my stomach is sick and it's all in my head but she's touching his---" before he says "chest" in the prechorus. I always thought that was a pretty cheeky line because if you're just reading the lyrics without listening to the song chest wouldn't be the first word to come to mind haha

the songs about him suspecting his girlfriend cheating on him.. “it’s all in my head”.. he’s having vivid visions of her cheating on him, and vivid visions of his girlfriend and another man doing the dirty.

Imagine writing your first song about a bad relationship experience and that becoming one of the biggest songs of all time. Having to perform and listen to the song a constantly and everywhere . Not what you expected from the first song you ever wrote
