For the younger viewers and/or non-fans of old French cinema: Mr. Bean's overtaking manoeuver was a nod to Jacques Tati's 1948 movie "Jour de Fête" in which the main character, a postman, with letter bags and full uniform, also outran a squad of racing bikes. Fun fact: the part where Mr Bean overtakes the cyclists; his actor (Rowan Atkinson) was actually pedaling very hard to overtake the cyclists, and the cyclists were actually cycling very slowly so that Rowan (Mr Bean) could overtake them. He later said that filming this scene almost made him die because it was so exhausting because he had to cycle very hard to overtake them
