How did you find this scene? Awesome! Still one of my favorites. I think a different score and tone this film could be epic. Instead of comedy take a more serious tone. But allow Selleck to act and be himself (Magnum).... Still a gem that I watch once a year.

I'm sure she was cast mainly for her looks, not her acting ability It's important to remember this was a Hollywood production and she fits very well the "china doll" image some Western men find appealing. I think the English dialogue is throwing her off in many of the scenes including this one. Compare her scenes to Ken Takakura's, who plays the manager with great convincingness, and it's pretty obvious. I very much doubt Aya Takanashi stopped acting because of some stigma relating to her character's relations to Tom Selleck's character. One of the Japanese actresses who played a Bond girl in "You Only Live Twice" had a long career afterwards, just to give one counterexample. It is true there's a pejorative term in Japanese, "yellow cab", for a Japanese women who is mainly interested in foreign men; it's kind of a slut-shaming thing. But since the script clearly calls for her to fall for this guy, one could hardly denounce the actress for it.

Your analysis is completely WRONG. Takanashi was NOT cast as a "China Doll" (pretty silly comparison to another culture that is not even Japanese). There are TONS of Japanese women who would fit that description and they were not cast for this part. Takanashi was simply NOT a very good actress in any language. She was actually pretty bland. SELECK, not Takakura, carried this movie and carried it well. It seems that you missed the point of the movie, which was about the qualities and drawbacks of BOTH American and Japanese culture. If you failed to understand that, it's your problem.

Her acting was perfect. What are you talking about? This is one of my all time favorite movies. To me it captures lightning in a bottle. She was perfect in her role. This scene however like a lot of deleted scenes in many many great movies felt like something I’d cut too. She’s calling him attractive too early. Worked better to me how naturally it happened in the final cut of the movie. The deleted scenes of Back To The Future feel the same way, they didn’t quite fit. Or felt extra. Movies are like paintings, and during the editing they adjust things so that it flows and all works. Sometimes too much is cut and it’s not the director’s final cut. But I can see right away why this scene was cut. Still loved watching it. But Aya did a perfect job in the movie, she was a huge huge part of what made the movie special. Definitely not just her looks. Her character was so much more than that. But we all have our opinions, peace ✌️

This scene is wrong. The crickets sound different in Japan.
