They fucked the franchise over so hard with that movie... They had 3x the budget and 20 years worth of technological advancement and time to expand the story and that's what they came up with... Neo literally just solves every predicament by using his force push and only surviving because of his impenetrable forcefield... How do we go from this absolute masterpiece to that steaming pile of crap? Neo, Smith, and Morpheus are the most iconic and important things they had to get right and they only somewhat got neo right. The other 2, you wouldn't even be able to tell who was playing them if the film didn't straight up tell you. Neither of them even felt remotely similar to their iconic masterpieces; almost like the actors didn't even see the films to know what they were supposed to mimic/be... They DIDNT EVEN KEEP THE SUNGLASSES, SMITH WITH NO GLASSES??? I swear they couldn't have done a worse casting job on the two... And of course they threw away all the "chosen one development", neo just casually sitting in the matrix for 60 years thinking he's a crazy person. He never gets his powers back, not really, and we don't even get the badass iconic slow mo bullet dodge either, they did it with a single bullet once in the entire film but just glanced over it, nowadays everything is solved with FORCE PUSH. Don't even get me started on how they just copied/pasted the entire plot of the first film, bringing back nostalgic moments is great but not the ENTIRE PLOT like what did they add that was even new? Neos back in the matrix thinking he's going crazy, he escapes and has to fight the system again with the last of the human rebellion. Like what did he really do besides force push his way out of every predicament? stuck in a room surrounded by 100 armed gunmen? FORCE PUSH. Two heavily armed helicopters shooting at you with heavy caliber rounds? FORCE PUSH. About to get blown up by a missile? FORCE PUSH. Car about to crash into you? FORCE PUSH. Where is any of the suspense and worry when he literally just blocks EVERYTHING WITH AN GODDAMN IMPENETRABLE FORCEFIELD. I swear if you compile all the times he used that bullshit to escape danger it would be over half the film... I'm actually extremely interested in an edited version where those scenes are all cut out, what would even be left? Overall the action scenes were bland af despite the previous films having some of the most iconic fight scenes in the industry... Guess they decided to blow the budget on explosive that neo blocked without any effort at all, throw enough explosions into a movie and hope people don't recognize how bland it was I guess. Who needs to develop an actual story with actual situations where the hero has to do something clever and skillful to escape... FORCE PUSH!!! Lost most of my attention in the first half of the movie so I might have missed some parts and I'm rusty on what happened in previous films but what happened to the oracle. Why was neo in the matrix for 60 years again without aging, what happened to zion or did it just become io by dropping the Z and N. Did we even really get answers to what happened in all that time that passed? Why did they decide to free neo again? Wasn't there a truce or something between humans and machines? How did he get tossed back into the matrix when he's the chosen one who controls machines? I really gotta rewatch the first 3 films then painstakingly revisit this one to see what I'm missing.

Smith is probably my favorite nihilist in cinema. He lost his sense of purpose and decided that if he can't have one, no one else can either. Actually all he has is his purpose. Hence why he is compelled to copy himself onto neo even though he knows something is wrong (hence his purpose rant in reloaded when he meats neo again). He’s compelled by his purpose and all he can say after is “it’s not fair” because he can’t see beyond his function to infect. Also that’s why he can’t understand Neo's choice to continue fighting “because I choose to”.

Dudes fighting in the rain, with lighting and thunder crashing in the background, with a truly epic soundtrack -- while all of the Agent Smith clones sit on the sidelines watching the final battle. Yup, even back in the first movie the rain was supposed to foreshadow the image of falling code. Here though, it’s too thick, too uniform, artificial looking on purpose; the simulation is breaking down because Smith is in total control and he doesn’t know how to do anything but destroy. The code is part of the simulation now, no longer hidden, and the Matrix is assimilating it as best it can like it does with any other programs doing things they’re not supposed to.

@@Alexeliomo The whole fight goes: ground: Neo wins, smashes Smith through street air: Smith wins, smashes Neo through wall and into building. air again: Smith bloodies Neo after smashing him through the rafters. ground: Neo wins, knocks off Smith's glasses and kicks him far away. Air: Neo lasts a bit longer, but loses in the end and gets smashed into the street hard enough to make a crater. Ground: Neo gets beaten a bit at first, but comes back and smashes Smith deep into the ground. Air: Smith comes flying out at Neo and knocks him down. Ground/air: Neo is finally too beaten to fight back, surrenders. Last blow is actually with Smith picking Neo up into the air with one arm, and punching him with the other, so it's a combination. So in the end, Neo always wins when he's on the ground, but there's one case where Smith wins on the ground, but that's after he destroyed Neo from the air many times and he was beaten.

Neo is sleek with the punches while Smith is going at him like a pitbull All this makes the viewer forget about the CGI But some other movies just wonner show us how good they are at getting CGI crew. It does state they are equal in this fight, dish out equal amount of damage, and neither can defeat the other. This is why Neo had to stop fighting and the whole point of him sacrificing himself. He's not afraid due to the death of trinity so he has nothing to lose anymore n not only that but knew even if all 100,000 clones attacked him. He would make it real n trick smith into thinking he's still fighting but ultimately will delete him entirely. So either way neo already won before the fight began. Smith's greed n arrogance to assimilate neo was his downfall despite having the powers of the Oracle to his advantage

One detail that unfortunately isn’t really able to be seen is that a lot of the rain was made to look like Matrix coding in post. Apparently it was far easier to see on an IMAX screen or in movie theaters, but essentially was there to symbolize how the Matrix was breaking down. Cool stuff.

The original movie was the most relatable. We watch a normal citizen venture beyond and earn his true freedom from what we know as reality. The sequels went very deep and far from what we know and I think that hurt them alot in terms of viewer reception. But I always enjoyed this trilogy and the very complicated nature of the story. Hugo Weaving was such a fucking badass in all of these.

3x the budget and 20 years worth of technological development and time to come up with something better... How is the cgi in the 1999 version better than the 2021, IT WAS MADE BEFORE THE MILENIUM and still miles better than the steaming pile we got... Neo literally just solved everything with FORCE PUSH and impenetrable forcefields, where is the suspense when literally nothing can touch him, no missiles, no bullets, no explosions, not a crowd of people, literally just force pushes everything and that's the WHOLE FUCKING PLOT, FORCE PUSH!!! Someone needs to make an edited version to take all that out, curious what would even be left... Put all that into a film by itself and it would be over half the movie.
