I absolutely love Smith's last words "no, that's not fair" bc it encapsulates what Smith has become compared to what he used to be. Smith used to be very eloquent and calculated, his speeches are often if not always perfect and concise. but as time went on, he becomes more unhinged and more emotional like when he laughs maniacally after claiming the Oracle or resorting to fist fights rather than being efficient. his last words "no, that's not fair" doesn’t sound grandiose as he used to be, it just sounds pathetic and it shows how vulnerable, almost human, Smith has become

I think that his last words reflex how Neo has changed him, at the same time of changing himself. After all, now Neo fights with precision, and gets close to perfection, while Smith slowly starts to develop human feelings and emotions and falls into a sort of program's madness.

simply terms, Neo was plugged into mainframe. Smith wasn't plugged in so he couldn't be deleted (or touch) Smith takes Neo's body, which plugins him back into the Matrix. After that they just delete Smith while also reinserting the code Neo was carrying into the Matrix which cause the reboot.

NewLight 777 it was the deal Neo had with the Machine Source. The Sentinels destroying Zion was a regular Tuesday for the machines, but Smith was something the machines had never encountered before. So to prevent humans from being destroyed a 6th time, Neo promised the machines to deal with Smith one way or another in exchange for braking the cycle. Thus at the end of the move the Oracle and the Architect was unsure of what was to come next.

When Neo first destroyed Smith, a part of Neo's anomalous code imprinted onto Smith. The two are now equal and opposite. The minute they merged, they canceled each other out. And Neo was plugged into the source, allowing his code to be disseminated into the matrix so it could be rebooted. This is what would have happened had Neo chosen the first door in the Architect's room.

And it’s a good thing he didn’t cause at that point, Neo wasn’t the only anomaly in the matrix. Smith was as well and thanks to Neo and the Oracle, he’s the only one that could complete Smiths code. Without Neo, the machines could never reset the matrix, purely because Smith existed.

And then in the second movie and third movie Neo is getting more robotic the way he talks and the way he's getting more emotionless and Smith was getting more human by showing emotions and getting more angry

Just to explain: After smith absorbed the oracle, the smith who had absorbed her got a vision that he was the one who would defeat Neo, but in truth. He had been lied to. Neo realized this after Smith quoted the oracles words to him and knew that he had to let himself be assimilated, so he did. What Smith didn't know, was that Neo was connected to the machine source, where he was supposed to go after Neo destroyed him in the 1st matrix. Therefore, the machines were able to delete him. :D

Calling him the new made Smith the old and by his own saying had to make him end. +Stegodon Sounds like it. Neo was plugged into the Matrix, wheras Smith wasn't. The only way to destroy Smith was to reinsert him back into the Matrix, thus him assimilating Neo. What Smith didn't realize, by doing that, allowed the machines to reset the entire Matrix program(hence the power surges from Neo's corpse and the symbolic lighting). And by doing so, had averted the end of Zion and ending the Human/Machine war.

+Gault05 The purpose of the Agent Smith program was to destroy Neo. With that done, the Smith program no longer had a purpose. One of the primary rules of Machine Society is that programs that have accomplished their goal are no longer needed and are thus deleted. Every program has that written into their coding. The machines activated that portion of coding when they got direct access to the Smith program through Neo's assimilation.

@@Scott777 It's been ages since I watched these movies, so I'm relying on the Wikipedia summaries. Basically, the Architect describes in Reloaded that Neo must go to The Source of the Matrix, and allow the Machines to reset the Matrix and create a new version. The agreement between Neo and the Machines is that, if Neo does this, he can pick a group of human survivors to rebuild Zion and continue freeing people from the Matrix. However, Agent Smith is the loose card. With him controlling everyone in the Matrix (humans and programs alike), the Machines no longer have that option; the Matrix is essentially lost. I remember the rest being ambiguous, but the way I read it is that Smith's death means the death of all the humans who were plugged in to the Matrix. So the new deal with Neo is that if he sacrifices himself to destroy Smith, the Machines will end the war with humanity. The newest version of the Matrix is created with Neo's unique code, and populated with the programs: Oracle, Seraph, etc. The machines have their world, and the humans have theirs.

@@Scott777 It gave the Machines back control over the Matrix and saved them from being infected and destroyed by what was essentially a virus at that point. Because Humanity saved the Machines, the Machines ended the war on Humanity.

To 1): Neo didn't become the One until he was killed and came back to life again in the Matrix. As the Oracle says: "Sorry, kid. You've got the gift, but it looks like you're waiting for something." @@charlesoflyon6578 there is literal connection to Jesus/Mary Magdalene and the story of Zion from the Bible into this movie. Jesus was a prophet - The WORD - Aka THE CODE. Mary Magdalene was also a programmer. She set up a new church, the first to see him resurrect, etc. Zion was a place in the New Testament - aka Holy city of chosen people.

When your standard antivirus fails badly and the virus overtakes your operating system so you purge the computer.

Just to expand on your comment; Neo's physical body was directly plugged into the source, allowing the machines to do whatever they wanted with him. The source is where programs are created and where they go to be deleted. Once Smith overwrote Neo, Smith had returned to the source, and thus could be deleted. All the Smiths must have been connected in some way, otherwise the source wouldn't have been able to delete them all.

I think this is based on logic. Every Smith is a copy of the other, therefore they share the exact same code. This implies that the destruction of that code causes a chain reaction that involves every single Smith in the Matrix.

There's an explanation that says it pretty well here, but to put it into broader terms... In Reloaded, we learn that Smith was "unplugged" when Neo destroyed him. So, in essence the machines and the Matrix had no command or control of him. And he was capable of assimilating other sentient programs to create copies of himself (a little bit like a botnet, but obviously with much different implications). Reinserting Neo's prime program into the Matrix would only solve the problem of the system crashing. Smith would still have as much control over the system as he wanted. When the Deux Ex Machine jacked Neo in, his "carrier signal" was connected directly to the Matrix's mainframe. When Neo was assimilated by Smith, it ultimately resulted in two outcomes in one. First it gave the machines control over Smith (or rather direct access to his programming) directly through Neo. This allowed the machines to destroy Smith's program. Second, it resulted in the Prime Program Neo carried being reinserted into the machine mainframe. This reset the Matrix. Coupled with Neo's deal with the Deux Ex Machina, it very well may have saved humanity!

But why havent they dealt with Smith earlier. Smith jacked the bodies of all people connected to the matrix from machine city as well. They are already connected to the main source so why they havent just bombed the body of one person from the power supplies and deal with it? I guess its because they then they didnt had ways to deal with Neo. But then again rhey agreed on peace which would result in releasing people from the matrix which inevitably would leave the machines with now power supply, so how does that help them? It just doesnt put up you know?

@@brandonheat889 The architect in Reloaded says that the machines have found ways to survive without humans in case matrix crashes completely. Those humans who were connected to the matrix got unplugged inside the system itself due to Smith's programming himself over their conciousness a.k.a copying himself on them. This was not the case with neo since he was DIRECTLY connected to the mainframe itself which allowed the computer to establish a direct link to Smith's code and delete it.

@@brandonheat889 so this answer is not given in any lore, this is just based on a theory by a computer science student. As for your two questions. First: why don’t they just kill Smith via a body connected to the power plant? I believe this is because of the Prime Program Neo carries. Recall that Neo was able to destroy Smith in the first film, and that the “anomaly is systemic”, which would explain how Neo was capable of infiltrating Smith and destroying him regardless of the programming safeguards the Architect likely programmed Smith with (obfuscation of code, whitelisting allowed programs, etc). And recall that Neo is the only one in the world capable of doing this. The machines require both a host capable of being assimilated AND the capabilities of the Prime Program to destroy Smith. Also recall that at this point Agent Smith is a rogue program and would have a way to containerize himself from the surrounding system and the source so as to not be purged from the Matrix (they could likely purge him at any time but not without killing everyone connected to the Matrix as well). Second question: remember that not everyone connected to the Matrix will be freed. Only those who make a conscious choice to be freed will be, and even of those people, only those who are at a “certain age or younger” will be freed because the mind has problems adapting. As for “Levels of survival we are prepared to accept”, recall that the Machines at this point are 100% dependent on human beings to survive. It would take years if not decades to create a sustainable energy source for their entire civilization via geothermal or wind power (assuming there even would be wind without the sun). The only reason Neo is given a choice is because it is the most pragmatic for the machines and would result in the smallest amount of their civilization potentially dying.

For all the people who don't get it, the leader of the machines is jacking Neo into the matrix, so Neo is connected to the leader of the machines. When Smith copies himself onto Neo, Neo becomes smith, so Smith is connected to the Machine leader. The Machine Leader destroys Smith by sending a surge of energy into neos body and Into Neos body, destroying smith.

As Morpheus said in the beginning, the machines won the war and humans were turned into sort of battery for energy. Later parts of the trilogy delves deeper into the lore of Machines vs Human war once more. To understand this, you have to watch the Animatrix First Renaissance and the second Renaissance. This is where the lore comes into full effect which is why normal movie audiences do not get.

I like the smile the new agent smith/with neo power give to the Original Smith , for me it's the last remnant of Neo inside the new agent smith body , he smile because he know he win

She probably put that part of the code in Neo at the first meeting and it got implanted into Smith when he was blown up. By absorbing Neo, they both were connected to the Source and the Machines fried Smith and rebooted the Matrix.

Best way to say it is that when Neo was absorbed by Smith he was plugged in directly into the machine city which gave the machines access to delete Smith.

In the end Agent Smith became the things he despised the most: a human and a virus.

Smith possesses the power of Oracle to foresee. But as oracle told us before, nobody can see beyond a choice. So in a way Smith is in a delusion. He said "Because we already know that I'm the one that beats you" And he does. He overpowers Neo. He cheers "This is it, this the end" But he can't see beyond Neo's choice to fight back and sacrifice himself. Therefore he is suprised to see Neo standing up. Neo does something Smith couldn't foresee. Neo accepts his own death which he rejected before.

I realise that in the second movie Neo was supposed to walk through the door to the source and that would destroy Smith and Zion but by saving Trinity he had a bargaining chip as the machines had never let the equation get so unbalanced as the other 5 anomalies entered the source strait away so in a way the prophecy was true just not in the way most thought

Actually Niobe driving Hammer through mechanical line was also cool. She was badass. In fact every scene in this movie is great. The conversation in Mobil Ave, Morpheus, Trinity, Seraph entering Club Hel, the very end of movie. But this particular scene is the best scene. That scene is the whole point of Matrix trilogy, the dualism of life and conflict of opposite things.

It is, I understand what you mean but his mind is dead. Like for example like u said, Smith touches something he likes so he copies himself into it like a virus. Like how he touched Neo the One, he copied himself onto him to use his powers and take over the Matrix but since Neo had the Matrix Mainframe on his case like an anti-virus, it deleted all the Smiths thoughout the Matrix including Neo. Oh, and he repeated that line because it was Oracle inside Smith told the same line to Neo before.

Twilight zone reference

When Neo became the new Smith, the "Un-Plugged" Smith became one with the system again, because Neo was hooked up to the mainframe. The machine mainframe did the equivalent of pulling the plug on Neo. Since Neo was Smith, the data from Smith was consequentially deleted, but since he was "freed", his entire data package had to be restored. Thus terminating the entire Smith program.Neo is dead physically but his mind stayed in the machine mainframe. At least, thats what I think. Hope this helped.

Programs start to learn humans, but where programs like Rama(program at beg of the mov. in indian guy appearence) learn love, Smith mocks love. He hates himself and starts to hate humans because humans in matrix are the reason of his creation. Throughout the movie he becames more human. In the Matrix his voice is like a machine, he rarely displays emotions. In this video you can see the difference, he yells, he gets angry, he sounds like human. While Neo learns programs, Smith learns humans.

(continuing) Allegorically this also symbolizes sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He sacrifices himself in order to repay the sins of people. Being possessed by Smith(Lucifer, ex-chief guardian of heaven(matrix in the movie), now Satan) represents being possessed by Satan. So with Neo's sacrifice machines are able to delete Smith(deleting sins) and save humans.

This had to be one of the very few movies that really made me wonder whats going to happen at the end to this epic buildup of a salvation story.

thank you. That makes some sort of sense. It also explains why Neo had to fight Smith, he could hav let Smith overwrite him willingly but that would have made Smith suspicious. There are clearly different parts involved with the "Machines". Basically the Architect wanted Neo to show up, it makes little sense that the agents are even trying to stop him from doing so. Unless as Smith says, they are just pieces of machinery trapped in the Matrix just as much as the bluepills.

The first time I learned that the third and final Matrix film, before the fourth and most recent one, said that its protagonist, Neo, or as Agent Smith calls him, Mr. Anderson, inadvertently dies, I was watching the Watchmojo top 10 video of movies protagonist deaths and when that moment came 0:09, I went "NOOO!", because it was such a shock, for me.

Love that light show of every street full of Smiths getting blown up. Reminds me of the heads blowing up in Kingsman

I hope the 4th movie will be even as entertaining as the last 2. The first one was a Classic 🙋🏻‍♂️

And very cliche, and as Jean Baudrillard says, very binary to his philosophy, thankfully the sequels explore more his philosophy, like reality with reality, the concept that we create our own reality, cause and consequences, and the illusion of choice, I like the original Matrix, but it seems your typical blockbuster movie, only that disguise complex philosophies with anime fights.

Welp, reality is often disappointing

Neo is one half of the equation, Smith being the other half When Neo is assimilated, the One becomes Zero

One thing to be noted. Neo dying in the real world before getting to the Machine God would have meant both The Matrix & The Real World will have died or collapsed. Neo would have made no difference jacking into the Matrix on a ship. He needed to get to Deux Machina so he is connected to the literal source. Smith assimilating Neo in any other fashion outside of the way he did would have done nothing to the outcome outside of Neo just dying for nothing. So it was all meant for something for Neo to ride with Trinity to the Machine Fields and get back into the Matrix that specific way. But also, he needed to use Smith as the bargaining chip for peace. Otherwise, he would just be endlessly fighting the millions of Smiths in the Matrix while Zion gets slaughtered left and right.

Consider the fact that throughout the trilogy - Neo becomes more like a machine, they both meet half way and become one in the end - Smith may mock love - but hate is just as valid of a method for attaining enlightenment as love is. Both neo and smith get their purpose and enlightenment from one another - they are both necessary to bring about nirvana and they both represent opposite facets of what it is to be human, something can't exist without an opposite. Life can't be defined without death.

Mat, you are wrong in your last line (by saying that it was Oracle who said.. "no, no, it's not fair). Its was actually Agent Smith realizing that he has been tricked (as he mentioned also). Oracle could also be seen lying on the ground at the end of fight.

Kind of ironic, Smith talks about fairness and that it's not fair that the machines are supporting Neo to defeat him while he is a program who only thinks and acts fair. But in this fight he is un-defeatable by Neo alone. Maybe the freeing made him a bit human

I would die for this!! What a brilliant and widen horizon phenomena:)

"Everything that has a beginning, has an end Neo" Why would he say this? Something cause him to say it. Must have be something strong to cause him to black out and not even remember what he said out loud. Smith took over Neo's body but when he did that, he plug himself back into the Matrix. (Neo was plugged in right to the Matrix mainframe) This allow "The Machines" access to him (his computer program coding), were they had total control again of him, wiping him out.

That's exactly what I said when I saw Trinity die.

Obviously everyone forgets here that A.I. helped Neo at 0:55 min, boosting his powers to fight Smith virus to maximum.

Only kind of true. The Deus Ex Machina (the ai you refer to) essentially did most of the work and just used Neo to make it possible. Once Neo was assimilated by Smith, it sent a massive burst of energy through his body to destroy him and Smith. It didn’t really “boost” him. Neo was already gone at that point.
