Mr. and Mrs. North (TV-1952) A GOOD BUY

Фильм және анимация

Sophisticated witty series starring Richard Denning and Barbara Britton as a married couple living in NYC who investigate various crimes and invariably solve them before the police do!
A GOOD BUY: Pam buys an old trunk at an auction and is immediately approached by a woman who offers her big money for it. Mrs. North digs in her heels and refuses to sell. When the trunk is delivered to the North home, it contains corpse--the body of the woman who'd desperately tried to buy it earlier.

I love this charming old series! "Decades" re-ran them all early in the morning and I binge watched the rest on You Tube! And the sets were re-used on the "Topper" TV series a year or so later. (And I didn't recognize our blonde guest star!)

Colgate-Palmolive-Peet {they dropped the "Peet" from their corporate name in 1954} sponsored the series during its first season; they also sponsored the concurrent radio series featuring Barbara and Dick.

These days, her blithely keeping that chest, gonna clean it up with some ink eradicator, would be called the episode that jumped the shark. And that's too nice a pie server (It's not a cake knife) to be using to pry up the bottom of a heavy baroque antique chest, even if it's only silver plate and badly scratched. Easy come, easy go, Pam dear?

I liked the mysterious (is that the ravishing Carolyn Jones?) black-haired woman's clothes at the auction much better than Pam's hyper-gauntleted, primly behatted gittup. I don't like any hats from back then unless they have big, broad brims. And a bracelet with emeralds shaped like a four-leaf clover? That's supposed to be TACKY? These Norths ought not to be snobbish when so many people are watching. Same goes for the upset little man at the auction who whispered that the woman wasn't dressed very smart, pressing the button for Pam to reply excitedly that it might just point to bad taste. They had that woman dressed in a serape and loud pedal pushers with plastic sandals in under 60 seconds. Do people still act that way? If not, then humanity HAS made some gains after all. (I think people still act that way, but it's no longer portrayed in movies and on TV or in novels and stories as commendable behavior. It's behavior that only the bad or tacky people in the stories display. And people in Reality TV, which is a zillion miles from true reality. And that's a gain.) Next scene right after the auction, off come the hat and coat, and sure enough, the dark mystery lady is atrociously dressed and a blonde with a hideous up-do that makes her look half bald. I give up, LOL.

I loved her as a blonde once because it WAS just once, that I knew of. Her jet-dark hair is so dramatic, it does define her, but in House of Wax, nobody could have played a more perfect tragic, generous, big-hearted, giggling little Victorian blonde

@@barbaravick5634 Sheree North? I cannot imagine such a thing. That poor girl actually has a nervous tick. I've always liked her, but competing with Marilyn Monroe? Carolyn Jones either, for that matter. It's like trying to make a diamond out of a pearl. Or an apple out of an orange.
