MPRT Explained - Monitor Makers Lie To You

Monitor manufacturers lie to you. A lot, in fact I’d argue it’s one of the markets where their lies are most prevalent, and one of the biggest bugbears of mine is the “MPRT” or Moving Picture Response Time figure most often plastered everywhere from the box to the product page. They get away with this because monitors, or response times in particular, are an area that many reviewers don’t cover and most gamers aren’t well informed about. So it turns out I’m trying to fix that, both by developing my open source response time tool (OSRTT), and by making videos like this so let me explain.

    yeah, i learned this lesson hard when i bought a dogwater slow $400 ASUS VA 27" 144Hz 1080p monitor 3 years ago or so and it was advertised with "1ms MPRT" and have kept using it since then. Not a good experience with all this fucking ghosting and dark level smearing when BLS is off and it suffers from VRR flicker below 72Hz but too poor to replace it, if i ever get the chance of buying a new monitor in 5 years or so OLED will be the only option i'll look at since i hate IPS glow and also hate garbage blacks that look more like greys (i'm sure MicroLED will be too expensive).

    After trying MPRT I watched your video and all the points were spot-on for the personal testing. I also started getting eye fatigue mere seconds after turning it on, and it was noticeable darker. Odd how our eyes work

    I agree that monitor manufacturers are the “used car salesman” of the pc market and BS outta every orifice 🤣😂 and printout / box label etc the print on! It’s great to see reviewers such as yourself and Hardware Unboxed not holding back and calling out these fallacies to the informed pc part buyer as well the “regular Joe” buying themselves or their kids etc a good product at a good price 👍🥰😇

    If it's measured by the monitor manufacturer then no, look for reviews of your desired monitor to determine if it's good for you.

    I bought an AOC Q27G2U. All those amazing specs for such a great price. In particular, the heavily advertised 1ms response time. Silly me for thinking response time meant response time >. What good is 144Hz on an 8ms GTG response time monitor? Should've gone for a TN panel, I figure.

    I also have that monitor. I use it at 81 hz with a vertical total of 2700 (1520x144/81), to get the same refresh speed as with 144hz and reduce crosstalk artefacts. This gives a very acceptable image quality during motion. Much sharper than sample and hold at a 240hz tn. That said, there is still significant ghosting when moving faster. For that a tn or ips will do better, as long as you reduce or avoid crosstalk the same way. By the way, you will not get eyestrain from strobing if you cannot notice the flickering directly, generally above 70-80hz, which increases with higher screen brightness and in the periphery of your eye. Eyestrain is caused by things that are hard to look at, such as ghosting, blur, stutters, tearing, lag, too high contrasts, rough movement due to not enough fps, and most importantly: for too long

    Yeah it's one of those marketing trickery. But at least they now state it's MPRT and I'm not sure if it's their job to educate us what MPRT is and what GtG. Because normal user probably doesn't even know what GtG is. But it just goes to show their intentions. Ideally we want manufacturers to give us both MPRT (bfi persistence) and GtG (with typical overdrive and without overdrive). Although we all know even if they did, GtG they provide is still very misleading.

    bruu, I got a new monitor recently 144hz 2k and I tried out each setting, to make sure it looked correct. when I playing minecraft, I noticed weird ghosting so I tried turning on MPRT and it fixed this. Then having this setting on for while, I started getting headaches and eye pains, which thanks to this video. I know now to have this setting turned off. somthing I would like to know is, how to fix the ghosting problem i'm getting? my monitor says it has FreeSync Premium on it, but I have not seen visual benefits having this on. Did I just buy a bad 144hz monitor?

    Well well, this was a great and interesting video. Thanks I stumbled upon accidentally. I was almost going to buy the monitor based on refresh rate and response time, but now there are variables in response time too. Can I please request you to please recommend a good affordable high refresh and low response time monitor of around 29-34 inches? Appreciate it.

    Does this mean that the monitors that have MPRT tire the eyes more, and cause more pain for the human eye? since it has something similar to FLICKER or BFI?

  • @PahEz

    @PahEz

    Жыл бұрын

    Bfi will most likely not cause any pain. It's imo one of the best if not the best feature out there. Just for an example if you have a 240hz OLED with good BFI, you could basically get 660hz of motion clarity if you have the BFI on high. That's 1.5ms persistence which is " close " to a CRT level performance which is considered to be " perfect " You will get insanely good motion clarity with low input lag and perfect colors/blacks and response time thanks to OLED.

    For me is only brake, shift and acceleration but this tech guys just complicate things around. GTG speed, On-OFF Speed and speed aka refresh rate and then you have color accuracy at normal speed and high speed. Hopefully all this chatting about quality and speed will go away with OLED monitors and everything gonna be life-spam and luminescence.

    I mean its one of the ONLY WAYS to get an IPS panel "fast" enough to be closer to TN panel fluidity....though you must disable freesync(no big deal in your common low settings/competitive shooters)....though youll also need to form a custom gpu color profile bc of the low brightness MPRT entails. Though if you play valorant/cs:go/Siege....this does help make a generally slower IPS panel feel much more crisp....at teh expense of brightness/color clarity....which again can/must be re-configured in nvidia control panel monitor color settings....or adrenalin. IJS if you REALLY want a competitive/fast IPS experience in those games....MPRT must be enabled and the only way to counteract the lower brightness is by brute/forcing in your GPU software suites. THOUGH its majorly a marketing gimmick to "SELL" 1ms ips panels when in reality most are 4-8ms as far as the decent ones like my LG 27" nano on SRGB mode just about the only mode i need to set it to. MPRT was "utilized" back when i had a budget 1080p acer nitro monitor but again its not very ideal in the slightest....and IMO freesync is better for the majority of gaming/pve/hack n slashers AAA titles by a wide margin saving gaming. Including adaptive sync 4k tvs like the LG oleds.
