I’m glad that the Ampex VR-7000 is back in working order, except the video is still having a problem, because of the alignment. I hope it will get this thing working. This was originally intended to use with CRT sets in both black & white and color.

If you are going to align the machine by eye, you should really use an analog CRT monitor. The reason is that flat panels have extensive digital processing and go blank with input signal anomalies. Even worse is viewing through your edit software. A B&W monitor is just fine, in fact preferable. Color CRTs on auction sites are through the roof due to the video gamers but B&W are still reasonably cheap.

I have a question. What is the purpose of bringing these old machines back to life? Is it something like restoring an old car and driving it a couple of miles a year because it makes you feel good. Serious question.

Serious answer. To recover and transfer libraries of videotapes. Tapes recorded from the middle 1960s to (roughly) the late 1980s. Rick, himself, has a library of several thousand Ampex videotapes he's eager to work with. TV stations, schools, government, companies and even individuals (like myself) have, literally, a vast quantity of videotapes stored away that could be recovered and transferred. Hope this answers your question.
