I have a tip about getting around Lisbon without a car. Liz is right. A car is a liability in Lisbon. My tip is to use Bolt, NOT Uber for a rideshare service. We had a terrible time with the Uber app not working and literally got stranded one night and spent 2 hours slogging up and down those hills to get back to our lodging. After that experience, a local advised us that Bolt works much better that Uber in Lisbon. He was right. Bolt worked flawlessly, was cheap with 2 people, and we never had to wait more that a few minutes for a ride.

Plus, if you are a group of more than 4 people, you’ll never get an Uber large enough to take you all. With Bolt you can order a larger vehicle.

Yes bolt can be great BUT they have no customer service in the city so if you lose anything in their car you won’t get it back! Mike lost expensive headphones that way x

On the note of footwear, I almost broke my ankle in Terceira when I visited. I wore wedges and they got caught in the cobblestones. So I 100% agree about wearing comfy shoes in Portugal lol.

Yes, the sunscreen was a shock 😂 I was in Porto in October it was warmer than normal for the time of year so I popped into a farmacia and it was 15 Euros for 100ml 😮 I had to buy it as I could feel my skin was starting to get too warm without it.

Lidl has own brand sun screen which is cheap as chips and brilliant. I am very very pale and have never burned or even gone slightly red when using it. Highly recommended.

Im a British expat living in the USA. Listening you talk about the medical costs, stunning. Americans would be on their knees sobbing to be getting charged those prices.

I would expand electronics to say all appliances are similar or more expensive compared to the US. Walking into Worten shocked me as to how expensive electronics and appliances are.

The other thing that I'd say buy by the bucket are meds. Firstly, always ask for 'genericos' at the pharmacy- this is already cheaper than branded, but a packet of asprin or hayfever tabs might still be 4/5 euros in Lisbon whereas at boots the generics are only 50p! Just buy the whole of Boots/ Superdrugs before you go!

Footwear is an interesting one. It's a few years since we visited Porto so things might be different but we did notice a lot of the older women seemed to wear shoes with inappropriate heels for the steep cobbled streets they were negotiating.

How many years? Because indeed those heels you're talking about were a big trend like a decade ago and there were some years that there was actually a discussion about whether it was needed to end the "calçada portuguesa" because of the many fatal accidents that were happening back then. Things changed a lot in the end of the 2010s in that regard but I still remember those discussions that even brought some political issues back then.

There was also a big meme on the Internet about the fact that Portuguese women are experts in wearing heels in the most problematic places with style. That's still true for many millenial and boomer Portuguese women but most of the Generation Z women in Portugal doesn't really have a big experience on that unless they work in very specific places and for very specific jobs.

I’ve been overwhelmed by the options for traveler’s health insurance for Portugal and an afraid of purchasing a plan that will wind up not covering required medical services. Does anyone have any recommendations? This insurance will cover one person from the US and one person from Brazil.
