Visited southern Europe many times, and finally Portugal (Lisbon, Porto, Duoro) in 2016. Been keeping an eye on Portugal since and now that we are within a 3 year time horizon, we're kicking the planning into gear! Flights booked to see the southern region (Algarve, Alentejo) this fall - not sure where we're ultimately want to settle but willing to keep visiting until we figure it out! Recently found your channel via your Expats Everywhere interview - looking forward to digging into the language! Obrigada!

I'm living in Lagos since 2018, but I have been about 20 years every year in Portugal for holidays. I had have the great luck to have portuguese friends near Lisbon, in whose house I passed my holidays. And we made many trips throughout the country with their camper. My mother lived here in Lagos too for ten years, but she returned to Germany. My brother moved the same year as I (some months earlier) to Lagos. I am very happy to live here and never regretted my decision.

I was just in Lisbon two weeks ago and I feel completely in love with the place. People felt welcoming and open to just talking to whoever, I speak some Portuguese so people were wiling to go the extra mile for me and it made feel so special. As a New Yorker I have the same struggles you faced in London, namely cost of living and it really made me consider what the world could offer me if I left. People feel so closed off and antisocial back home but in Portugal it doesn't matter if you drive a Mercedes or a bicycle people still treat you as an equal, I admire the way people just let go of materialism and enjoy life. Can't wait to see what other videos you cook up for us.

Hi Jennifer. I am Portuguese and I lived in Portugal for 20 years. Think about it. Moving to Portugal in these days is not easy. Because of pandemic things has changed for the worse. I am not scare you, but you have to understand that Portugal is not seems as it seems. The cost of living is low good news, but the salary is also low. The food is amazing and cheap. There is lack of jobs everywhere is extremely difficult to find a job in Portugal. Cost of living is low as I mentioned earlier on but houses is cheaper than London for example where I am living but the problem is job and will be more difficult for someone who doesn’t speak Portuguese. Many companies closed. The weather is amazing, three months of summer which is incredible. You must learn Portuguese if you want find job there, or I don’t know your background but think carefully before you give this step. And the taxes are very high you must be aware of this. Think twice before moving. Do the math before moving. I have to admit that if you go on holiday it will be fine but living there these days it’s a bit complicated.

Very SMART!! I HATE the cold so these will be necessary and I really enjoy a solid eight hours of sleep as I'm a health nut and sleep is essential. Hope I don't come across the noisy neighbors or dogs and I have had three in the past!, so that was good advice as well!!! When listening to you I just saw I had exactly same situation. My friends moved into their lives in different direction, I was running a company for 10 years and got tired, Polish government is on the same collision course with the EU. Now after 2 years I'm totally into Portugal, finishing my day with a glass of wine on the beach with my fiance, learning to surf and most importantly living quality life instead of living mostly to work. It's great to hear more stories like this. Abraços!

Like you we had been planning a move to Portugal before the referendum but when the result came in we decided we just needed to get on with it. We moved to the Algarve in 2017. My husband is Portuguese so I could apply for citizenship after three years. It took 2 years to be processed! So good luck with that!!

I'm going to visit next year to look at land and just take a break abroad for the first time in years. Looking at the price of land to build on in Central or Southern Portugal, it seems like a no brainer. The place I'm renting now is valued at £180,000 and that's just a small studio flat...I could get a few acres and build a house from scratch for around a quarter of that in Portugal! I could farm the land a little, have some animals. My work is digital so I think I can make the visa. The weather looks amazing but the people and the pace of life sound even better! It sounds so so friendly and inviting! I hate what's happening in the UK, health and social care are being destroyed by the Tories (along with everything else) and it's definitely affecting the way people treat each other. I've already spoken to some other English people who immigrated to Portugal and some Portuguese people in the areas I like the sound of and am totally blown away by how friendly and welcoming they are. I've just started learning Português (like a week ago) and this channel has been my favourite for picking up all sorts of useful phrases and words!

Wonderful to hear your journey Liz and can definitely associate with your experience of London. WFH may have brought about less commuting and some additional savings, however it took away that random charm and diversity London offered from a social aspect. Yes, many theories speculate a reverse in our current working patterns, but considering expense targets, climate change goals and faster internet at home than at the office…the social aspect the office of the past brought might be very irregular going forward. Not to mention everyone now rushes to get out the house on weekends, which means being squashed on the tube comes with the package 7 days instead of 5 days a week now. Definitely getting old and grumpy now.

When I read your comment about moving to Olhão in the Algarve, it reminded me of my 2-week stay in Olhão with my first wife some time during the 1980s. We stayed at the home of a Portuguese friend of my wife's whom she had met a few years earlier at an Arabic language school in Tunis. We enjoyed the short time very much travelling also to Faro and Tavira. Beautiful memories of those days! In 2010 we travelled to Portugal again, this time staying in Lisbon and visiting Coimbra and Sintra.

I fear as a Brit with a Portuguese home near Castelo Branco, entering retirement I would not be the Portuguese Government's idea candidate. The country is desperate for young blood. My dream is still to spend as much time as I am allowed as a tourist in your beautiful country. Stay safe.

Good video. You did the right thing. London is a very toxic city. It’s always been my dream to leave the UK and relocate to Cyprus or Greece. I’m currently studying to become an English teacher abroad even though music is my passion. Since conscious hip-hop music isn’t marketable, I’m doing this purely as a sacrifice to realise my dream. If I manage to get this qualification, I should be able to live wherever I like. Portugal is also a wonderful country. I love how the Portuguese stay up late and have fun unlike people here in the UK. At the moment, I just speak modern Greek and English, but I’m also learning Portuguese (both Brazilian and European Portuguese), Spanish and Japanese. The only people who I’ve ever envied in my entire life are those who’ve managed to leave the UK and live a proper life with good weather, sun, sea and warm people. Seriously, you don’t know how lucky you are. What frustrates me, is that people in Greece and Cyprus including my relatives (I’m British Cypriot), discourage me from leaving the UK, have these fixed ideas that London is the “centre of the world”, Cyprus is a “village”, Greece has no quality of life due to the economic crisis, everyone should structure their life in the country their born and raised in and modernity is the “be all and end all”. As pessoas têm as ideias erradas.
