I moved to 🇵🇹Portugal from the 🇬🇧UK at the age of 52 without knowing a single person, not speaking the language and had never even been to the country. Makes no difference where I am because being half German half Nigerian I don't fit in any where either. Portugal is a country of such variation 😊

When I turned 58 years old I packed up my 2 suitcases, give up my business and moved to Spain. It was an adventure, I was so fearful but excited at the same time. I have now lived like a vagabond for 9 years, the world is your oyster and u lived only once. It is an amazing journey and seeing for myself to what is going on rather then the lying news!

Very nice video. I'm 64 and through my life I moved from Sweden where I'm born to England, Germany, US, back to Germany and then back to Sweden. Then I unfortunately divorced after 28y marriage. Decided to pack up, bought a boat and took of to sail around the world. After 8 years now the boat is sold and I'm in the phase of moving to Valencia. Life is an adventure. There been some ups and downs, but have overall a tremendous and wonderful experience. Good luck and you seem level headed standing with both feet on the ground as we way in Sweden, and I think you well have a great adventure looking forward.

I can relate! I am 56 and I just moved to Portugal also. I am originally from Denmark but lived in Northern California for many years. A lot of what you talked about really resonated with me. The friendly Portuguese, the beautiful countryside, the beaches and the proximity to easily explore the rest of Europe. I too feel so safe walking alone really anywhere I've been. It was a big move, but one I am happy I made. You do reach a point at a certain age for me at least where I was more afraid not to do it than to do it. The time for adventure is now for sure!

Having visited Portugal for the first time in my mid-50s with a buddy back in May, I can echo the sentiments about the cities and sites in Portugal. The Algarve is a gorgeous area. I commend anyone with the spirit to venture alone to these places and set up a new life. It certainly is a thought for this Canadian as well, and I am glad to see that others take the leap of faith and go forth. There is part of me that expects to meet other similar people but it would require efforts and time (including learning a new language). All the best with your adventure.

I'm Brazilian, lived in Japan for about 21 years, now I'm back to Brasil and living here made me feel unsafe... after 12 years here I felt that Portugal/Spain is one of the most safest places in the world specially if you choose to live in the country side... I'm 53 now and I'm planning to the end of 2024 to live in Europe to rest of my life... I really don't feel like I fit in Brasil anymore... Brasil is good, but the violence is too much for me...

Moved around the area like vietnam laos Cambodia. Then I went to the Philippines and met the mother of my son. Finding work was very easy there, finding a house is easy abroad too, easier than in the Netherlands. Last year I lived in greece and now I'm thinking to go to Croatia Italy or Portugal. Im kind of weighing the pros and cons work and cost of living wise plus location. I'm back in the Netherlands now for 2 months and already sick of it wanna leave again asap, im 33 now. Been doing this for over 10 years now. Netherlands is a good country I guess for a lot of people especially foreigners, but I never liked it here either.

What you’ve just shown me, is that it’s NEVER too late to do what is best for you 😊👍🏾. I’m aiming (after my surgeries next year), to move from the U.K. I’m born and raised in London, lives here all my life, but I love to travel.❤ I have travelled solo, and my best solo trip was to Phuket in Thailand last year. Next year, I’m aiming to go to Bali, Indonesia. However, I was looking at the possibility of wanting to move to KL in Malaysia, but now I’m resettling on the idea of going to Bangkok, Thailand instead. I have many reasons for this. I just turned 44, and divorced, WFH , live my immediate family, which is fine!😂 however, I need my space and my time to do what feels is driving me. I no longer feel the love for my own country (England) due to politics, and how cost of living is just ridiculous here. Plus other things. I’m being realistic, and practical and not wanting to have my head in the clouds. It’s a big step to make to want to settle in another new place. Scary too! But it doesn’t matter what your age is, you’ve had the courage to make what you wanted possible 💪🏾

I'm from the US and in a similar situation, not liking what's going on in this country. I'm in my 60s and feel like I belong in Thailand. I'll be moving there permanently in 8 months. Welcome to Portugal, Daphna. You will find some portuguese places with strong ties with Israel like Belmonte. Portugal is the oldest country in Europe with defined and stable borders: almost nine hundred years. This country is the result of a heritage from european, arab and jewish cultures that stayed here for many centuries. That mix has given us a curious combination of patience, negociation and a language with many inherited words. The portuguese language is the official language of 9 countries and spoken by 236 million people around the world.

Congratulations on your captivating video. Across the annals of time, the Portuguese had roamed the world, guided by an insatiable curiosity, seeking hidden treasures in a world yet undiscovered. Today, we joyfully extend our open arms to all, without prejudice, who embark on a voyage to uncover the abundant cultural and gastronomic marvels in our cherished country. However, it is the immense hearts of the people of this humble nation that truly define the greatness of the Portuguese, transforming them into a grand and noble nation.

I’m an uncharacteristic Portuguese in all aspects - physically (1m92/6’2”), mentally and spiritually - always having felt a foreigner in my own country, not belonging here despite having an immense l🤩ve for this gem of a country. I feel like the mountain is coming to Muhammad from this astonishing 🌊wave of people from all over the 🌍World moving to Portugal. I’d like to talk to you about this more in private but I don’t know how to go about it. We’re South Africans that have been living in Mozambique for the past 20 years. We’ve just bought a plot in Seixal and will begin constructing our new home soon. As an interior designer I’ll be documenting this process online 😬. If you haven’t already found them, Kalie and Josh from @expatseverywhere have been a good resource for us. I can relate to what you're going through. I'm French, from an Italian father, I do have family in Italy. I moved to the US in 1990 and in 2021 I finally bought a house in the Pyrenees. The plan is to move there definitely, for now it's just a summer house. While living in France I never felt French. I've always had the feeling something was wrong with the place. The first years in the US, I was young, it was different I thought it was great. I had some wonderful years in New England. Since 2006 I'm in Maryland, just outside DC and I hate the area. The country is not going into the right direction, Americans frankly are becoming weirder, no sense of community, nobody gives a shit about anything. But here's the catch, I'm not sure Southern Europe, that includes France, is going to do very well economically and as far as the climate is concerned in the next 5 years. I will keep one foot in the US and start looing again at Vermont. I wish I could speak Norwegian or Swedish, I think I'd go there, unless somebody can tell me why I shouldn't. Please, no weather speech, as I said I've lived in New England, I'm used to snow.

Scandinavia has become a bit of a woke mess, as well. What were once very safe, immaculate towns in Sweden, are now over run with migrants from the middle east with no intention of ever becoming part of the host culture. There are entire areas the police now consider "no go zones" because of safety issues.

My grandparents came her from Italy during the war and I was raised with same Italian heritage and I miss it so much! They fled Italy as well for same reason but to America. My parents are gone now and I am alone in my 50's as well and now want to go back to Europe and am thinking Portugal. I want to visit and see Europe. It is scary, but it is scarier here, and never feel like I belong either, I don't feel happy hear at all and I want to live a quality of life again like my Italian heritage. Oh how I so relate to you of that espresso maker, same one on the stove, and the smell and the homemade pasta diners on Sunday afternoons..My grandmother would roll out the speggetti by hand and the pastafasoli and all the squid, etc..Italian cookies with creme da mint and sambucca . I would love to come there and meet you at expat meet up. I am planning a trip to Portugal and jumping over to Italy to look at both but leaning towards Portugal for now because of cost but not sure. I also like the idea of seeing all of Europe been wanting to go to Mallorca Spain because my father whom I adored always wanted to go there because his favorite tennis player is from there and it is gorgeous. I want to see if I can feel his spirit there. I feel a bit lost in my life right now and I wanted to start a new in a place where I feel at home again and match my values of way of life...kindess, nature, food, peace, flowers, wine, safety as woman, and comfort, etc...Thank you for sharing!

@Daphna. / I definitely agree. It seems that some of the smaller countries without much of an economy or " progress" concentrate more on each other, simple pleasures and earning a living. No " rat race ", no class status , nothing pretentious. Hopefully, that will not change. The USA used to be like this when I was growing up in the 1960's . Very different today. ...

@@Daphna. Happy for u. Take things with a dose of salt. 🇵🇹 is not easy and far from perfect, but overall, the positives outweigh IMHO. The safety issue is paramound, although we have dropped quite a few places from 3rd most peaceful country. In a way, because of the increased population and new comers, but hopefully this is just a temp glitch. We want all here to be safe. Take good care and enjoy my country. Ciao/ Shalom! 🙂❤️🇵🇹

Got to the point where you said that you wanted to make a move because you cannot stand the changes going on where you were from ... oh how that resonated :D. I'm English and my country is wilting before my eyes, largely due to insane levels of unwanted and societally incompatible immigration that for some reason the government has decided it needs. Our culture is being murdered before our eyes and, as I am too old to fight, my only option is to run. I've been pondering Portugal for a few years now but I am caught in the oddest of cleft sticks in that, until I get my pension, I likely will not be able to get the necessary visas - it's quite maddening given that I have the resources on hand to support myself and my missus for the full five years of the D7 process :chuckles:

I recently had a conversation with my friends from Amsterdam, and they expressed a similar opinion to yours. It seems like this sentiment is growing among Europeans, but on the other hand Europe needs the young immigrants because of the steep decline in population . In that way Portugal has taken a unique approach by inviting wealthier people to come live there through programs like the golden visa and the D7 visa

So you’re going to protest the immigration in your own country by adding to the number of immigrants in another country? I mean, Portugal sounds lovely and I don’t blame you for wanting to go there but have you seen the videos of Portuguese people complaining of too many immigrants in Portugal?

@@Tyiion I am aware of the irony and, yes, I have seen such perfectly justified videos. I have even commented on those and been taken to task by certain folk who want to believe that Portuguese folk don't resent the soft invasion of their land too. At least they are getting useful and wealthy immigrants rather than the criminal wastrels we are letting in. It's not much recompense but at least it might lead to an improvement of Portugal's economic position rather than its demise.

@@dallassukerkin6878 But the thing about immigration is that every immigrant thinks they are one of the “good ones.” I am from the US so I can’t really rail against immigration since there wouldn’t be any US at all without immigration. We get immigrants of all kinds here. I have noticed that the groups that have the most difficulty transitioning into the country are always the ones that are discriminated against the most. The groups that are excluded from mainstream jobs and treated as if they are very alien are always the ones with the highest crime rates.
