Moving to Costa Rica vs: Colombia: We compare the two popular expat destinations in 2024.

Many Americans, Canadians and Europeans looking at moving out of their countries consider moving to Costa Rica and Colombia. For us, we chose Costa Rica, but in this video, we compare and contrast the two popular expat havens, talk about why we chose Costa Rica and why you might chose Colombia over Costa Rica.
Did you decide to move to Colombia - perhaps Bogota, Medellin or Cartagena - and not Costa Rica? We'd love to hear from you in the comments.

Thank you so much for opening this conversation. I’ve vacationed in Costa Rica now for the last 5 years (except during Covid) We’ve enjoyed ourselves immensely and recently had the opportunity to purchase a condo. Because we purchased the condo, the suggestion to apply for residency came up. With current research I’ve done I’ve been trying to balance the benefits of doing so. I plan to spend 5 months of the year in the country for now, but as I get older may opt to stay longer. My main concern is the difference in health care costs as a resident or buying travel medical for the months I’m in Costa Rica. I’m very happy with the Condo, it’s in an area where I have access to most of my needs ( shopping etc) and I’ve stayed as a vacationer in the same condo so I know this will work well for me. In fact looking through the points you discussed in this video was reassuring for me! Thank you!

Costa Rica food is healthy. Old people in CR are very healthy! And they have a Blue zone.

Good info. I am North American USA and my wife is Colombiana, we have a goal to buy a place in Santa Marta, that would double as an Airbnb. I feel safe in Col, however, last year we rented a super nice place with ocean/beach views, on our way back one night after shopping we were almost to our building when this guy stopped us and said where are you going... He advised us not to continue it was pitch black and he said you guys are not locals, and will stand a chance of being robbed etc... I love Colombia and the people and it is on the cheap compared to USA, but there is a safety concern or just need to be very aware of your surroundings and where you walk, just use good judgment. But then there are places in the USA, that are just if not worse. I would like to check out CR before dialing in a house purchase.

Why would you want Columbia when Costa Rica is a postcard of beauty?

Panama was part of the Colombian federation until the USA needed the canal. And in fact it was the CIA’’s first covert operation inciting a civil war and Panama gained independence and the canal was built!

You should include natural desastres as a category to compare where to live, also

Colombia was our first travel after the pandemic started. We went to Medellin and stayed at the Hyatt near the US Embassy. Our takeaway was that Costa Rica is the country we would continue to live in and that Colombia is a great travel destination.

Good day - Great videos, just found your channel on youtube and going thru your library. I have travelled thru a good part of latin america as a native spanish speaker (Mexico-CRica-Chile-Peru-Panama-Brazil), here is my opinion based on my personal views/experience. I am a colombian born individual and we need to take in consideration the political scene/tempearature or ecosystem while undestanding the direction. Sticking with the video topics, Colombia is going thru a dark transformation, just think of it, an ex-guerrillero - one of the best friends of Dictator Hugo Chavez is the president of the country... let that set in and hopefully this will trigger some flags. That being said, i dont live in Colmbia and cannot consider going back to live there unless things drastically change, but sadly i see that very difficult. Everyone is different of course and everyone has a different joruney/situation and desires but Costa Rica in my view (having been there about 1 month ago) is what I would love Colombia to be. We (Colombia) have more to offer being a bigger country, the topography and different but similar ecosystems, but it goes down to the mentality of the people. Believe me, it kills me to say bad things about my home country but it is the truth and i am considering moving to CRica soon. Thank you.

I would also prefer Costa Rica strongly, Colombia is a quite socialist country. That Scandinavians and US count better than CR depends on the perspective since the population in CR is poor but expats aren`t they can live there better as in the US and Scandinavia whereas CR natives want go to countries with better salaries like US and Scandinavia.
