Moving the whole family from America to Poland. Life in Warsaw pros and cons

We are starting our journey in Eastern Europe, Poland. Warsaw is a capital of the country, the center of business and culture. There is about 2 million inhabitants here and it is also the biggest foreigners hub in Poland. The city is attractive due to appealing costs of life and wide job opportunities. The cons mentioned predominantly are high estate prices and problematic bureaucracy. Getting the residence card is not easy peasy, you can get some tips, how to obtain it later on in this episode. Biggest fears before coming concern dealing with the language, culture and customs. But in the capital people are used to a large number of immigrants, so they are open, helpful and usually speak english. Majority of expats came to live in Warsaw because of the job market or family ties.
In this episode you will see some of the city sites, you will have a quick inside into social live, and you will get some advises how to settle down in Warsaw.
Make yourself comfortable and, let me introduce you to the main character of the episode- Christina.
Christina is half Mexican, have American, who decided to quit everything in the States and move to another part of the world with no connections, no relatives, no job prearranged, but with two kids and a bible. Let's check how she moved the whole family to Warsaw. How is her life in Poland?

@Anakonda Films actually, Poland and the u.s. have an agreement that their citizens can come in and live there now whether the US still honors it I don't know but US citizens can always get into Poland. I believe it's every I think 90 days but I'm not sure, they have to leave for 24 hours and go somewhere like Russia Ukraine and now the UK. they can prove it with a receipt from a restaurant or hotel. But they absolutely cannot go to the Schengen area. That would be illegal as they would have outstayed their visa for Schengen. But with the agreement that Poland and the US have American citizens are allowed to stay in Poland.

I do think that you are going to be fine and live well in Poland - Poles are family oriented, many of them are Christians so culture is somewhat similar to Mexican culture. @@nikka00 I don't like the Polish winter. For me the main problem is not the temperature or snowfall, but the duration (the cool/cold/very cold period is very long), short daylight (additionally aggravated by the change of hour in October, which I consider unnecessary), and the gloomy mood accentuated by nearly perpetually overcast skies. These issues are not that serious in the USA, that (apart from Alaska) are located deeper south than Poland (for example, Washington DC lies roughly at the latitude of... Athens, Greece!). Even the coldest states, like the Dakotas, have more sunshine in winter than Poland does. Well, you're right that a large chunk of Alaska may be "worse" (colder, darker). And not only Alaska - Norway's Svalbard even more so - right now they don't have daylight there at all. Not to speak of the North Pole.

So this gal got a job first illegally (her "visa" when she first arrived was not a visa that allowed her to work), and then after securing a job(s) of a certain amount of pay, she was able to transition to a proper visa to work. (OK, maybe the law allows her to work without a visa so long as she transitions quickly enough?) While I could see how the cost of living in coastal CA is ridiculous, there are plenty of places in the USA that have affordable housing and where jobs are plentiful (at least now, with the worker shortage), and she'd probably have more extra cash per month, especially since she'd be eligible for lots of benefits for free. From my experience in Warsaw, I can definitively say that the ratio of cost-of-housing to pay is quite high (local folks tell me this all the time).

Poland was in the Western Christianity camp versus Eastern Orthodox camp. Those values I'm on some determined Western versus Eastern. But I am acknowledging the Poland was really in between because we had a lot of mixing going on from the east So therefore the right term to use Poland is Central. Germany is also considered central but to everyone it's usually referred to as Western due to the fact that biggest part of Germany was on the west side of the Berlin Wall.
