Movies & TV's Most Unrealistic Grand Gestures: Dates, Proposals, $$$ Gifts, & more

Фильм және анимация

The Romantic Grand Gesture is one major romance trope that film and TV just can't get enough of. From filling a room with candles or bouquets of flowers to orchestrating a flash mob proposal, there are some wild romantic gestures in media that are so unrealistic they’re almost laughable, but... we love them nonetheless! Let’s take a minute to zoom out and take a look at all sides of this trope, unpack some of the most ridiculous dates and grand gestures in film and TV, who gets to experience them, and why this trope often conveys the wrong message about love.

It's the day-to-day, small gestures that truly manner. A rare, large gesture really means nothing if you don't have the small ones. When someone makes you a cup of tea, or massages your temples when you're tired, takes care of some of your errands when you're busy (even though they're busy, too), leaves a sweet note somewhere you'll find it, drops off coffee or a snack for you at work, or hugs you when you need support...these 'little' things matter. They add up over time to a kind, thoughtful, supportive relationship that has a real chance at surviving the long haul.

He was trying to be romantic. It wasn't buying your love as there was no money involved. A jar of butterflies is not a diamond ring or a wad of cash. Maybe you led him on a bit too. Would you own up to that? Ultimately, even if you had butterflies for him, it doesn't last forever. Real love that lasts a lifetime is more about enduring some tough times with that person, not letting them down, and hard work. Butterflies and chemistry are just are hormones.

@@ant713m yea, your entire comment kinda proves the videos point. You're right, he was trying to be romantic, but it was after I already expressed my intentions that I just wanted to be friends and I did not "lead him on" and even if he thought I did, that doesn't excuse him ignoring my verbal non-consent to a relationship. And you can absolutely buy buy people off or buy or sway their affections with favors, actions, and emotions. Not everything is monetary.

@ashiebmast72 Yes, but you were not bought off, were you? You said you didn't have butterflies, so he left a jar of butterflies on your doorstep. He hardly broke into your house and threatened you with an axe. I don't think this is a consent issue, as he didn'tforce you to do anything. You are making it a way bigger issue than it is. Perhaps if you clearly just said, " I'm not interested in you. Please don't attempt to contact me in any manner again, I will not change my mind" it would have been better. You obviously did go on a few dates so it's not like you were some random stranger who had zero interest. A lot of relationships require either person to make a bit of an effort, lots of ppl break up and make up again. He was trying to convince you, but I don't think that's wrong, otherwise no relationships would last if either person never tried. If it was damage to your property, physically harmful I'd get it, but I feel you're being a bit extra. Also, I'm female, so I get the concern but if he was that awful you wouldn't have gone on a single date.

Great comment! 👋🏻 After thinking about this video, I came to the conclusion that grand gestures are a lazy short cut. I won't say they are wrong 100% of the time but in general such public gestures feel intrusive. In movies they work because well these are movies and the scene is written with the intent to work (most of the time). But in real life, many people don't like public attention. I hate it. I would never do such a thing in public and I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end as well. 🫣 Also such gestures feel manipulative. You almost force your significant other to say "yes" because people are looking. I mean, it depends if it is a public proposol (that has been mentioned before or is expected) or just a thing to get the girls attention. Still why go big? If both partners are the kind of people that enjoy such a gesture, fine. But not to manipulate, push, lazy short cut what you want onto the other person. Or to show off. I think the thought behind it is that going big will give the relationship a boost and the likelihood of it working out will increase. I have serious doubts.

I wrote a book with the idea of a guy thinking if he did big gestures the girl would like him. It was written in the woman's perspective (3rd person though to have scenes without her in it), at first she thought they were okay, but after a while it gets scarier and scarier until the point where he breaks into her place to kidnap her to go to a cabin in the woods so they would fall in love there. The best friend breaks into his house to find out that he was totally into the woman and walls were covered in movie pictures and pictures of her and him photoshopped together. The friend then tries to get the cops to help as she tries to save her friend. It was a fun book to write. I watched a lot of romantic movies to write it.

Grand proposal CAN be romantic if the person being proposed to actually wants it and it's to their tastes. For example, if my potential partner took me to a park and made me a part of a musical number (I love musicals) which would lead to them proposing, I would absolutely love that. However, if they arranged some sort of super elaborate proposal in the middle of a busy supermarket, I'd be mortified. You have to actually know your partner if you want to propose. And uh..Grand gestures are kinda icky if you're not even together with the person you give them to. 😅

I feel you. I myself don't like public attention at all. It makes me mega nervous. While that guy probably didn't have harmful intentions, I think his behaviour was intrustive. He forcefully pushed himself into your private life. I'm not saying public gestures are always bad or wrong. It depends on the persons involved. To me it reads that this boy didn't know much about you and he just tried to take the short cut by trying to win you over with a public guesture. I think that's what it is: A short cut! Movies need shortcuts and straight lines and beautiful Hollywood gestures that push the story foward because they don't have unlimited time. Real life isn't a race. I mean, if this guy knew you and you two had talked and he was under the impression that you would like such a public gesture, that would be fine. But if he just chose the lazy approach by spending money or time onto some fantasy element (even a song would apply), it feels (very) wrong. You should like someone for who he are and not because of how many flowers s/he bought. Interestingly enough, I don't watch too many romcoms but I accepted the ones I enjoyed as how they are. Of course you could analyze every movie you watch to death all day long and see how realistic it is. But it is interesting that we as the audience take the "romantic gestures" trope as a normal thing while it isn't common or even unrealistic among normal people. And then it becomes a real thing, either because people believe that romance is like in the movies and/or because your social environment has had big weddings and rings and expensive honeymoon etc. and you don't want to be the "I rather safe the money for things we need" kinda person. Or talk about Valentine's Day, why should you only give flowers on that special day a year?

This is a good analysis. Being almost 40 now, I just want someone who works on themselves constantly, doesn't cheat, who has a moral compass and a nice bubble but. A romantic gesture for me is acknowledging shortcomings and going to therapy. Let's leave the crazyness for the movies so we can enjoy it without expecting that stuff in real life. If you show up at work with a band, I'm getting a restraining order.

I wouldn't put Downton Abbey and Chandler and Monica's proposals alongside the others scenes featured in your video, because we are the only audience, whereas usually grand gestures imply a public audience, and to me that makes for an entirely different mood. We feel privileged to be sharing this intimate moment, it's somehow modest, despite the kneeling and the formal ritual of proposing.

I find, as a woman, i see this 'need for a grand romantic gesture' thing worming into men's brains a lot more than women's. I'd be perfectly happy for a date to just be grabbing a cup of coffee, but I have found more than once i've been on dates where the guy had tried to create a magical meet cute atmosphere by doing something quirky, or buying romantic gifts before the relatinoship is really at that stage. it creates a lot of pressure on you as the woman to respond positively, and it often feels very insincere - like these guys have watched Love Actually and think if they just press the 'romantic gesture' button enough times that it will fast track a woman into loving them. its overwhelming

I got to pick out my engagement and wedding ring with my fiancée and he even made a little highlighter ring on my finger before hand (which was signifgant because he remembered a scene from a book I read). He then told me how I was originally planning to propose. It was more of a bigger grand gesture but still very simple. I like the simplicity of a proposal and making it more about two people who want to share their lives together than about trying to impress or be flashy.

Crazy Stupid Love fits this niche, too. It’s also a fantastic movie. It’s full of characters who try to find happiness through big gestures and rehearsed pick up routines but end up finding it in little, human moments instead. The best scene is between Jacob, a playboy, and Hannah, who rejects him repeatedly until her boyfriend tries to hire her for a job when she expected him to propose. In a rage, she finds Jacob and demands to go home with him. Once they get there both of them try to follow the routine that would lead to a one night stand, but instead they get sidetracked and end up talking all night and being emotionally intimate instead of physically. It’s one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever, because you watch them fall in love with each other as they try out Jacob’s expensive massage chair he’s never used and laugh about TV commercials and ask each other about their families. It’s sweet and honest and the two are played by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, who fucking nail these roles. The rest of the movie is good, too, and funny as hell, with genuinely one of the greatest plot twists in cinema as a whole. Edit: also since you mention Bottoms (which I haven’t seen yet but it’s on the list!) I think Blockers and Booksmart also have tropes that fit what you’re describing.

FABULOUS!! but if they're not? you just put your SO in the worlds most uncomfortable scene where saying no isn't an option unless you want to risk the end of the relationship😨😨 I dont get why so many ppl disliked the Chandler/Monica proposal but the idea of popping the question while in private surrounded by candles, maybe not a million of them honestly I'd be paranoid of a fire hazard but that is how I wished I'd get propossed to, just something private not a Beyonce live performance show

My husband worked his proposal into the opening of a professional theater production in front of several hundred people. He knew the lead actor, and they planned the scene. It was my birthday, and we had a block of seats, so all the people I cared about most were there, including his parents and mine, and everyone but me was in on the plan. To this day, ten years later, I'm amazed my mom could avoid spoiling the surprise!

In one of my stories, an excentric baronness organises a context for Valentine's day: a group of men is invited to try to make the best romantic gesture. She and a very unorthodox young teacher will be the judges. All the candidates try to do big romantic gestures, like being almost naked despite the cold, and are mocked by the two women. Then comes the teacher's lover, a Black young man from a poor family. He doesn't wear fancy clothes, just ordinary clothes plus the coat he borrowed from her and instead of singing or saying crazy things, he tells her how he never stopped thinking about her since their first meeting and that while he was working in cold, her image was enough to warm him. He's granted the victory and the baroness gives the lovers the rings she and her husband wore when they were engaged.

Only here to support the channel. I hate rom-coms and this is a major reason why. Much of what is show is extremely unrealistic. I do realize that people usually got to the movies to be entertained and to forget their troubles for a bit, This vid, plus the love-bombing video, show how dangerous these behaviors can be when replicated in the real world.

  • @kayleighdriessen
    @kayleighdriessen4 ай бұрын

Imo romantic love shouldn't even ever be about those dramatic grand gestures of "love" cause this kind of behaviour could end up being love-bombing in disguise, while romantic couples can still spend non-dramatic quality time outside of couple-duties they should still remember that their sole-reason for being romantically/sexually together is to procreate, not to be put on a pedestal by a society that has nothing better to do, they ain't that special. Edit:cause trust me you can't just indulge yourself in any form of irresponsibility or debauchery when you have a child looking up to you for guidance and care.

Cause girls are trophys To be won or bought and Like they Said, ITS usually the "emotionally unavailable Guy" WHO has to make Up for something, while If she Had done anything wrong, she would Not BE Wörth of the romances anyway . . . . WE are way more willing to forgiven Guys, cause they try, then women cause they should have known better. The Incannfix them mentality pretty much exclusivly applies to men and in cases one wants to apply IT to women, Most often there IS a Twist, that the men was wrong in thinking He could Change her for the better

Because women are trophys To be won or bought and ITS usually the "emotionally unavailable Guy) that has to make Up for something since If the Problem lay with her, she were Not worth the romance. The whole Madonna whore Thing . . .a womans great gestures IS giving Up everything to becomes His trophy . . .

Expect the reputation of prudent women to plummet this year as these women try and find dignity and respect, but never from themselves, always from the rest of society. I'm tired.
