Movies In My Collection That I HATE! | Why Do I Keep Them?
Ойын-сауық
Today we're having a little conversation on the collector mentality, specifically the movies that we keep in our collection that we don't like very much and maybe even HATE! Let's do it!

I personally do not buy or keep movies in my collection that I hate. 1. Because I’m limited on shelf space and don’t wanna waste any of it and 2. Because I want my collection to represent me with movies I love and am passionate about.

*I am the opposite I collect movies even if they're ones I hate if its by a certain actor or Director. I am a completionist, Hell I have 104 Stephen King adaptions across Blu Ray & DVD & I would say half of his adapted works are hot garbage, I also collect Arnold Schwarzenegger & he's made some questionable films in his time, I have nearly completed my Denzel Washington colection also, one of the few actors to never do a bad movie in his near 50 years in the industry.*

I only buy things I actually want to watch. Movies cost too much to buy something I hate that will just sit on the shelf forever.
The very first time I watched "A Clockwork Orange", I didn't like it at all. Today, decades later, I feel it is a masterpiece. I remember being bored with "Lawrence of Arabia" upon first viewing, whereas it may be my all-time favorite movie now. Conversely, I remember loving "Field of Dreams" when I first saw it in theaters in 1989. Today, it is "meh" in my eyes. Our tastes change.

Yep, it tarnishes the sentimental value of the other discs being part of the collection.
I respect when a positive content creator like yourself isn’t afraid to get a little negative sometimes. No one can love all the movies, and we shouldn’t pretend to! Really enjoyed the video, even though I like a lot of these movies. haha
I can honestly say I don’t have unwanted movies in my collection. No space or money to waste on crap I don’t want. I only buy films I like, which makes my collection feel more personal. I even bought Batman and Returns separately because I didn’t want Forever and Robin on my shelf 😅. That’s the type of collector I am.
Disney Star Wars need not exist. We gave The Force Awakens a free pass. The Last Jedi was a travesty, and after that, there was absolutely no way Rise of Skywalker could rescue anything. Disney just thought they could turn it into another MCU and that's never been what fans wanted. Although I'll give Rogue One credit where it's due as that movie was really good.
Halloween Kills is easily the best of that modern trilogy. I'll take that to my grave. I've seen enough first time react channels praising it after watching it to know I'm not crazy.

We're on a completely different spectrum re: Under the Skin. It has nothing to do with ScarJo being naked. It's unsettling, goes into dark places that makes you feel uncomfortable, and disgusting in some places (like you said), but at the end of the day it is a horror movie. A pretty well made one at that, while artsy in some sense but not so much as something like The House That Jack Built which now I cannot recommend given your opinion of this one.

Ken, this was a great episode! Collectors always end up with certain movies they don't like. Sometimes our tastes change over time and damages our love of certain films. Sometimes when have very high expectations for a film and are let down, those are the ones that improve over time. Life Aquatic was like that for me. Anyway, please do more of these episodes. Thanks Ken.
I owned "The Force Awakens" 2015 physically when it was first released on Blu-ray because I actually really liked it at the time. I sold it 2 years later a few weeks after I saw "The Last Jedi" and really had time to digest what direction they were going with the story. Ruined the first film for me unfortunately.

I was the exact opposite! I stormed out of the theater after seeing a reboot that should've been a sequel, but I bought it because I wanted to give it a second chance. I popped it out when I saw Rey understanding beeps. I had forgotten that the writers made it so human beings can understand beeps in Disney's Star Wars and that is just too stupid for me!
I have some of the worst Zombie DVDs in my collection I keep them to share with friends who enjoy horrible films.
I've been finding 28 Days Later and Weeks Later on Blu ray at thrift stores/Goodwill, and Half Price Books. They're out there, people just need to search for them and not settle for eBay. Also, since 28 Years Later is being made, expect Disney/Fox to release 28 Days Later and Weeks Later on 4K in the future.

Won't need a 4k. The camera's used in portions of filming Canon XL1 digital video (DV) camera's. These are easily moved but really low quality so it would just be a mess on 4k. Parts look bad even on bluray. The only way to fix would be dnr which would look too waxy.

The Skinamarink and Prisoners of the Ghostland steelbooks I own definitely qualify for this. If they weren't steelbooks, I would have dropkicked them out of my collection a long time ago.
I like that Diamond Luxe release, do they still make them? Do you have others, maybe a Diamond Luxe collection video?
Rise of Skywalker is a great film. Sorry they didn’t spell out he was a clone with on the nose dialogue “I cloned myself”. They took the show dont yell method. Good topic Ken thanks. I've been collecting for less than three years and I have one in particular that I despise, even though it garnered a lot of positive hype...Last Night in Sohu. Was a rare blind buy, lesson learned. Beautiful cinematography, all else yuck. Under the Skin, I liked it! come on man:) Thought it a very well crafted unique sci-fi, though the family seashore sequence is hard to watch as you mentioned.

Hi my friend. I understand how you feel. I have been collecting movies since 1972 with super 8mm films. Then BETAMAX, VHS, LASERDISC, DVD, BLU-RAY AND 4K. It's hard sometimes when you don't like a movie but you must purchase it. Great video 👍 enjoy your day my friend.
I restarted my collection couple years back with a few rules. I never blind buy films, I need to have watch the film I buy in the last 5 years or I’ll rewatch before buying, i don’t buy movies I don’t like even if they are in a trilogy or series. (Per example I have Batman begins and the dark knight, but not rises)
Ooh, you don't like Midsommar, and I was thinking of getting that special A24 release, but worried now 😬. Do you like The Wicker Man?
Thanks for the "28 Days Later" info. I saw the movie in the Theater, and I liked it enough. I would be willing to sell my blu-ray for scumbag ebay flipper prices.
Awesome intro! Personally, i only collect what I love to rewatch. Literally the only one I can think that I "hate", would be Jurassic World, but only cos it's part of that beautiful 4K Jurassic Park Boxset... Individual releases I already sold if I know I won't watch them again. Oh, I do still own ALIEN Covenant... I am very space limited though, so this keeps my collection super lean!

Hahaha, I blind bought Color of Space and hated the story. I haven’t been able to bring myself to sending it to the Goodwill yet.
Hi Ken, well I don’t have any movies in my collection that I hate. If I don’t like a Movie I will not buy it or I get rid of it .
Mostly someone in my family likes a movie I hate, but the main reason 4 me is to collect a series of movies. Also, "it's so bad it's good" is the reason:)
This is why I do not blind buy movies at all. If I don't know I already like it and can't envision myself watching it multiple times I don't want it!
Rob Zombies Halloween movies are those movies that i genuinely do love, I’m not afraid to say I’m a fan of, and love having repeat watches of and even watch KZread videos explaining/deep diving into the movies, but I completely 100% understand and won’t argue when someone says they don’t like these movies, like fair 😭
I'm in learning library mode with my collection and if there is a film I dont particularly like, I still hold onto it. I'm also different than the casual movie watcher because I'm in research mode at a constant. Dive deep into cult movies in particular and you're just going to own a bunch of schlock intermixed with the good. It's the way it goes....
I’ve got a ton of films I truly hate in my collection, but I keep them either because a good friend gave me it or because someone I know likes the movie and I’ve basically been the family’s Blockbuster for the past 30 years. So while I have space I’ll keep the DVD / Blu-ray. 🤷
Keeping movies from when you get to older worked out for me. Like American Beauty and Trainspotting. Watching at 20 you didn’t understand what they were really about. Watching at 40+ they’re about something totally different and are far better.
Every year, I purge my shelf of movies that I know I won't watch again. Although the other day I had the thought that some of those may end up being worth a ton, and I'll wish I hadn't sold them.
I'm constantly weeding out lesser tittles that I have acquired to gain spaces for films I enjoy more that get announced. I'm past having anything I really dislike, but there are a few still lingering that I are only ok that may have to go if something better needs a space. I did have Under the Skin, but let it go as it just too darn slow.
The only thing I don’t like about my collection is not having other options of type of blu ray or 4k. e.g steelbooks where there is no standard blu ray or 4k as an option!
I don’t have physical movies that i don’t like but i do have a bunch of digital movies that i got when i combined my account with someone else that i wish i could get rid of
I usually do a lot of research, check reviews, or watch movies before I consider buying them to avoid collecting a lot of junk. Having said that, when it comes to my 100-movie and 200-movie sci-fi and horror movie boxed sets (from Mill Creek Entertainment, for example), naturally, there are movies in those sets I don't care for or hate entirely, but since they are part of those sets or are accompanied by other movies on the same disc, I'm stuck with those movies. Haha! Plus, I have a lot of Full Moon Features Grindhouse DVD's that I mainly bought for the box art either on big box VHS (reissued) or on DVD, but those movies are not spectacular for the most part. They are fun to display though. :)
I'll be honest I like collecting bad movies for a reason

I blame the boutique labels for this, specifically Vinegar Syndrome and Shout, why do I have Road House and Killer Klowns or some of the most obscure horror films ever made.
Hobgoblins. This is a treasure trove unlocked, Cheers!
I have the same feelings about RZ's Halloween. I despise that movie. I also agree that Part II is a little better because it's more of his own thing, but it's still a mess and I don't really care for it either. I keep them only because they came in that SF box set.
For me it's like an emotional attachment or a memory of where I was in my life when I bought it. The movie itself as to whether I like it or not can be irrelevant. This is what makes them hard to throw out or sell. At least in my case. 😊
The Humans was originally a play that was rewritten for film. I think it's an absolute masterpiece look at the PTSD people suffer following of the events of 9/11 in NYC. If you watch it with the subtitles on, it's a completely different experience and every tiny detail makes sense. There's so much going on and I think much of it is lost because it's hard to follow where the dialogue is going, hence, the subtiles. It was also mismarketed as a horror movie when the truth is the horror is really the unresolved traumas people live with. I'd give that one another chance. The last scene with the father absolutely broke me. It's brilliant.
I was the one who sent you the Wonder Woman 1984, Anthony M. I love both Halloween Kills and Wonder Woman 1984! Maybe we are expecting the next film in the Planet Of The Apes franchise to be serious since Kingdom was so I can see your frustration when a franchise changes tone unexpectedly. I just mainly want to be entertained by movies and a heavy slasher and fun action in WW84 both succeed for me in entertaining me.
The trick is with franchise box set that I like there are 2 I don't like in a way it's a waste so I try to buy movies I like separately and ignore the rest
At one point I would buy movies I didn’t like only because I knew my friends might like it or would wanna see it if they came over! Also when it comes to a franchise I am a completest. I need them all
No idea why you would purchase a movie that you don’t like. Makes no sense lmao.

While you were Star Wars ranting I was thinking, I wonder what he would think about Bubba Ho-Tep, and then to my surprise there he was -- creasing with laughter! I like Bubba personally for the quirky story of Elvis & JFK in hiding at a nursing home, but I get it is a hard watch for most...
I recently got rid of Under the Skin and Natural Born Killers myself. There are too many movies to love, why keep the bad?
Do not let the Disney SW stuff ruin your love for the franchise. This is why I only have the original Blu-ray SW 6 films (plus Rogue one - my only concession as it's a great transition film between the two trilogies) and no others.
I didn’t see the directors cut of Midsommar but some people say that this is the one to watch. It’s 171 minutes though and that A24 shop exclusive is not cheap
Lol, tried to watch under the skin alone, couldn’t finish it; my gf tried to watch it on her own, couldn’t finish it. Then we tried to watch it together, and we couldn’t finish it!! It is SO boring, although I agree we should revisit movies and have an open mind!
Loved this video, Ken! Although I don't own them, RZ's "Halloween" and "Midsommer" also make my worst list. "Midsommer" actually made me hate "Wicker Man", which I originally liked. Because of "The Last Jedi" I refuse to see "The Rise of Skywalker" - both those movies should rot in hell. I will admit I liked "Halloween Kills", but I'd easily consider "Halloween Ends" as one of the worst.
I only buy movies I really like or love. It keeps me from going crazy and spending too much money. BUT I’m glad you don’t so I get to watch this great content.
Had no idea 28 days/weeks was oop, cool to see stuff in my collection be worth something, the gravity blu ray just coming out reduced the value of my diamond luxe edition quite a bit, idk what is the most valuable piece in the collection anymore
While Im a DVD / Blu ray collector, I am my way more into music and collecting CDs. That said , it took me over 15 years to become a fan of Love's Forever Changes album. I really didn't like it when I first heard it in the 80s. But today ? It's in my top 5 of all time. People's taste changes over time. I can understand holding onto something in case you eventually might like it. Now , if it was taking up space that you need for something that you do like , makes sense then to get rid of it. I personally don't have a DVD that i don't like but I also dont have a lot of room
For me personally out of my collection if I don’t like a movie I wouldn’t buy it, but if I accident it happens because i seen it in the theater and thought I liked it more then did, after watching it two or three times at home and didn’t like it, I’ve gotten rid of it. Now there are movies that my mom liked that were in her collection that when she passed away I inherited those. I still keep them even though I don’t like a couple of them.
The latest Resident Evil movie I thought was worse than all the schlocky films that came before it... But my film hoarder brain said I had to complete the collection, so I bit the bullet and bought the (admittedly nice) Steelbook edition 😂😭
Also yeah i have quite a few movies in my collection i dont like. So definitely understand where your coming from.
Funny enough, my wife and I were just looking over our movie collection and deciding what movies to get rid of. It's not really because we're not going to ever watch them again (which we mostly will not), but more that we are thinking about moving to another state next year and the more we get rid of, the less we need to move. Right now though, some of the biggest pieces of crap I have in my collection include Silent Night Deadly Night 3-5, The Dark Knight Rises, The Watchmen Ultimate Edition, the Rob Zombie Halloween movies, Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, Ant-Man 3, Thor Dark World, and Black Widow. Oh, and a few movies that are in collections like the Universal Horror 30 movie box set and Kino's Film Noir box sets. There's some truly bad stinkers in those, but if I get rid of say Set #10, then it would look weird having 11+.
The entire TRoS has a lot of explanation now. Also, "The Man Who Killed Hitler then Shot Bigfoot," is about a guy who did all of this amazing shit, but all he wanted to do was be a husband in his town. It's not about what he did. It's about what he did not fulfilling him, and that's profound as fuck
I got Femme Fatale for free from Shout Factory or something, I forget. But I didn't much care for it. Didn't despise it, but I would never have bought it on my own. But it was free so I don't really think I can get anything for it anywhere, and so on my shelf it shall remain. But that's pretty much it, I only spend money on physical movies if I'm super into them.
I was hoping for more on why he keeps the movies in his collection and less on why he hates them. I am a big physical media collector myself and I have movies that I constantly debate giving away or keeping, and I was hoping for a perspective from another collector.
Only ones I can think of that I purchased and I didn't inherit, would be the Disney Trilogy of Star Wars films and a Majority of the MCU, I stopped collecting it after Endgame, last one to come out that I liked was Antman, after the Endgame I just liked Spiderman 3. Rest of the films that I own, I either think is fine or actually like it. Most of the "it's fine/it's okay" are on DVD.
I have a rule to keep my collection from getting to out of hand. I use IMDB to keep track and rate my movies that I watch. They use the 1-10 scale. If it's below avg imo.. lower than 5, it's GONE. Idc if it's a steelbook, criterion etc. Goes right to a family member, or sell it on ebay etc. So a 4 or lower. As far as exceptions. Maybe if it was part of a box set, or a trilogy etc. But I haven't run into that issue as of yet
Halloween Kills....evil dies tonight. He killed 3 people. 40 years ago in town. 3 and only 3. What happens when you ignore the sequel.

Halloween kills was much better than either rob zombie movies
Tastes change. Getting older means seeing many things differently. I don't know which movies I'll like in 30 years or if I'll even watch movies by then, let alone if I'll still be alive. Also I often like a movie more or less just by watching it at another time of day or because of my mood or because of the movies I watched before or after it. There are practical considerations like money, time and space but all in all I can't easily decide which movie is "worth keeping". I think we are tricking ourselves into believing we know what we want or need in the future.
There's certain movie series where I like certain ones but it doesn't make sense to have missing films in the series. I don't like POTC 3 but I liked 4 and 5, and it didn't make sense to only own 1, 2, skip 3 and own 4 and 5. Same with Jurassic Park. I don't like 2 or 3 but since JW 2 references them, I have to own all of them to complete the story.

How do you like Pirates 4 & 5 but not 3??? I know the Davy Jones locker sequence in 3 is awful, but once you get past the first 30-45 minutes, the rest of the movie is just as good as Dead Man’s Chest. For me, it goes: 1. Curse of the Black Pearl 2. Dead Man’s Chest 3. At World’s End Big Gap 4. Dead Men Tell No Tales 5. On Stranger Tides

@@dankairgadam8841 It's overly long and convoluted
I had movies in my collection that I felt nothing for, but once when I moved I tossed them out. I regreted a few and brought a few back. For the most part I don't buy movies I hate. All the movies I own on DVD that I hate were gifted to me and later I threw them out or gave them away. On aonther note I just got my copy of Michael Keaton's first Batman film on 4K steelbook. Just about to watch it as I wrote this.
Ahhhh now I see why you hate Bubba Ho-tep. I love the movie but didn't expect it to be anything like Evil Dead when I saw it the first time
Halloween Kills and even more so Halloween Ends. I have no idea how they managed to destroy a new trilogy after starting it with a damn good first movie.
I’m pretty much in agreement with you on all those except for Under the Skin. On first viewing I thought she was an alien, but slowly came to realize that she’s a robot controlled by aliens to bring them humans to feed on. The guy on the motorcycle may another alien or robot to keep her on her mission. Just brilliant. Zone of Interest is also brilliant but make sure to watch it with a good Atmos system.
i agree with you on all with the exception of 28 days later and Halloween but i see what you mean with Michael Myers origin's story i see you argument and may the LORD CHRIST JESUS BLESS YOU
Seems like 28 days/weeks later being worth something is a better reason to sell than to keep. Those movies are popular enough there will be a 4k and/or reprint to make your blu rays drop in value.

28 days goes for good $$$ rather good flick. U be waiting long time for a 4k.
Like you, I’ll keep/collect if the movie is part of a franchise. I’m collecting every slasher from the 1980s because I LOVE the iconic artwork from that era. I have a bunch that I haven’t even unseal because I know the movies are bad. 😄
Wow, I feel exactly about hereditary as you do about Midsommar I so wanted to like hereditary. It was all hyped up to be the greatest thing ever and I hated it. I thought it was just awful predictable and awful.
With the exception of Bubba Ho-tep I agree with your opinion and thankfully I don't own any of those movies.
One I _really_ don't like but actually have the BD steelbook of to rewatch in the hope of seeing what everyone else seems to see is (ducks) *Fight Club*
