it has nothing to do with education. actually, Hollywood want to change the way we are thinking or... make us believe the unbelievable or... destroy the logic of our minds. this kind of movies in Hollywood are seeking one goal, which is, everything is relative and the word IMPOSSIBLE does not exist. I really advise you to read the book of John Perkins "economic hit-men" and I'm very sure you will be able to read between the lines in every Hollywood movie. when we "humans" are floating in the space of lies and have no ground to stand on then it will be easier for them to control us because everything is relative and there are no stiff facts.

What is science?

People can accept Science FICTION in star trek but not in Interstellar? It's called a science FICTION movie for a reason. It's not a scientific documentary. Interstellar is one of most beautiful film I've seen in a long time and it's nice to have a movie that can shake up your brain a little bit and turn you curious about the universe we live in and what a fresh break from all these superheroes movies fatique.

If a planet was able to exist that close to a blackhole (that's another topic of discussion), the pull would create a bulg of water in one side of the planet, not waves. And with such strong gravity, if waves were produced by sismic activity, they would be much smaller than those on Earth.

I don't really feel good that an animated children's movie beat such a movie like Interstellar at the domestic box office. I wonder what that says about us as Americans. In terms of box office. A huge factor is that Big Hero Six was released in 3D as well as 2D. That means that it gets twice the show times in theaters. Another factor is that Interstellar is a three hour long movie, meaning, that fewer showings can be shown in duration of theater hours. Those factors play a significant role in box office. I sure hope this helped!

From what I could gather you could even have physics Ph.D without ever taking a course on GR - though it got better lately. You surely can't expect everyone to have university-grade knowledge on physics... I mean, lots of people have some layman understanding from science popularizing books with little to no math in them, but even that is only if they're interested in this stuff. Can't expect everyone to be that much interested in it.

It really isn't that complicated and I think it should be taught in high school it should be general knowledge and is more of a lower level of physics concept wise, but it can get complicated. But the concept should be taught at least.

As a general concept it should be taught early, and at least a worthy mention (like a dedicated lesson or two with some interesting stuff) of Quantum Mechanics should be there. If only to show youngsters that there is more to it than just boring math. Not to overload them with equations, but to give them a glimpse of what they could be learning about should they choose that direction later on. And that would also probably force some teachers to say "...we don't really know how that works yet" to kids asking questions about black holes or something. ;) Doesn't happen that much in school.

I was almost disappointed that Neil couldn't admit that Interstellar is a good movie in that, it is a very enjoyable piece of cinema and fairly accurate for a Hollywood movie, but I can't fault him for naming Contact as his go to celestial travel movie of choice so to speak . Personally, I think they're both great movies and I will be purchasing Interstellar as soon as it comes out on disc.

Well, like you said, they are on a time limit. He could go on and on, but he already got the point across that it was the sonic boom, and the ending of the interview is coming up. The woman notices and asks a question that has a finite, fast answer that gives him the last word. I'm sure you'd find it ultimately more disrespectful if they just told him time's up and cut him off.

I love listening to Neil deGrasse Tyson. He's truly a gem for the scientific community.

The expressions the two other anchors were giving were hysterical. Just a "Help me, I have no idea what is going on and I don't want to sound stupid" look. The main host lady was rockin it, though.

I thought the movie was fairly realistic. I mean, if I ever traveled through a wormhole, I'd expect to find Matt Damon, waiting to murder me.

You guys are too harsh on the hosts. Not everyone has the time or energy to learn advanced physics and cosmology. They were polite to Neil. I would rather have tolerant ignorant people run the world than intolerant educated people any day.

I love just hearing that guy talk. I love his voice and charisma.

I'd really appreciate it if the news stopped trying to be "hip" and started trying to be intelligent instead. Don't act stupid because your betters are watching the ratings. Engage that dialogue. In these times it may not come again, it certainly isn't often. People are too impatient to care about the wonders of science it seems. Science is like a side-show to the real-world for most people because money-makers can trick the reward systems of basic people. You lack critical thinking skills so you're easy to make money from. Of course they can't have you plumb the depths of the cosmos and your being earnestly, you'd make measured decisions in life making you useless to most of corporate America. In fact the dumber you are the better off someone else is.

david bouy im a bit late, but that television isn't oriented to people who want that or understand what the conversation would be about, that's why it's dumbed down

Contact was a GREAT fucking movie! Haven't seen it in years, but because I just watched this and Neil brought it up.. time to go watch it again!!

I feel dumber listening to these anchors adding in there little comments, I love how their faces are just blank every time he tries to explain something. They have no idea what he's talking about.

They are criticizing a master piece.

Nice interview, I like how they nod and smile when he says Contact the Carl Sagan story. :

I love NDT but I hate his aversion to ever having a stance on anything. Countless interviews he never takes a a stance, and always plops himself right in the middle of either argument. There is a difference between being objective and being neutral on literally everything, a big difference. I suppose its a big picture business concept that avoids alienating any potential fan base

No doubt. I find it hard to believe that he can't have an opinion on something that is so closely related to his passion. It's almost cowardice. Did you like the movie..why or why not, Neil...it's simple.

mykul koplan I get the impression that he isn't wanting to jeopardize the success of the movie based on his opinion of how accurate the science is. He's not being a movie critic, but he carries a lot of clout in the public eye and doesn't want to tank the movie that might otherwise inspire someone to pursue science, help better the planet, or be good to someone, all simply because he found a flaw or two and told the media his thoughts on it.

Then it's something I love. Most people today try to be skeptics for the sake of being skeptics, debunk and all that. Well, I sort of like it, because I don't like the ignorance and it's good to hear the skeptic's side, but sometimes it's good for once to have a nicer person in the scientific community. I mean, he says what needs to be say, but doesn't need to say sucks or rules. We miss those people. Everybody wants to be an arrogant skeptic.

A stance on what? He takes very strong stances: against the anti-GMO and anti-vaxxing movement, against faith-based attacks on science in the classroom, etc. Or you mean a stance on _this_ movie? Well, weren't you listening? He already said the science holds up. Do you want his opinion regarding the film's narrative structure? That's not really his specialty.

There was very little that was realistic about this movie... pure science fiction.

I guess that's why "fiction" is in the title. My scientific minded husband thought some parts were cheesy and my brain is very "dreamy" so I was entranced the whole time!

NZXcel You seem to be uneducated, do you even know anything about physics? The wormholes and black holes were simulated from actual equations. Yes, it wouldn't really be possible to travel through a wormhole, but they did a pretty good job making the movie follow the laws of physics, i.e the time dilation.

XxCoolnamewithXsxX lol do you actually believe there is a planet which could possibly have a time dilation factor of 60,000? You do realize that for such a scenario to be possible you would need to be near the surface of the black hole and well under the minimum possible stable orbit for any object around it. Not to mention the tidal forces would have torn that planet and the space craft which attempted to slingshot around the black hole to pieces. Oh and surviving falling into a black hole? You actually think all of this is realistic? The equations were there to substantiate the visual effects nothing more.

In terms of realism, Gravity is probably the most realistic sci-fi movies but the main reason for it is because it's using technology and environments we are familiar with. But yeah, realism isn't necessarily the best thing about a movie.

It was ok movie. Obviously there was some attention to paid to physics of such flight, etc. Obviously the physics of it aren't rock-hard, Miller's planet most likely would be too close to the black hole judging by the gravitational time dilation. Even if it did exist, just getting on the planet and getting off would require ridiculous amounts of energy. I guess I should just let it slide because it is fiction after all. I really disliked the twist and felt it was very far-fetched. And then there are the gaping plotholes ( origin of wormhole become paradoxical towards to end, why didn't NASA just call Cooper, how was the world outside of US, why send humans instead of their advanced robots on completely unknown system etc. ) The characters were bit dull, I felt they were there to fill in some very predictable roles ( cannon fodder, token traitor... ). It is still above some trash I have watched ( most recent was Lucy which was a horrible, horrible movie ), but I wasn't particularly tingled by it.

Great interview. So glad he said Carl Sagan's story- Contact. Made me well up inside. Great men, both Tyson and Sagan. The earth is a better place for having humans like them to teach and guide us.
