The real differance between a remake and a sequal imo is the quality of effort put into it. A sequal will either continue the story if its too big or is based on another story entirely, both with pros and cons. However a remake, is based on the same story as the original so it feels kinda dull espically if they just put a couple famous celebrities with a cameo and they wait for the profit.

And it made me think think, is it worse for a franchise to fade away into obscurity no matter how good, or kept around through the occasional sequel no matter how good or bad? Cuz at least with sequels people's attention is drawn back to the original work one way or another.

I like the Star Wars Sequels, but the Disney Remakes are something that could’ve gone better. Out of Remakes I only enjoyed Maleficent, because it took a great direction with a Villain in my opinion, and made her more compelling character with personality. On top of that while it did retell elements of Sleeping beauty, it was executed in a different way that felt fresh. That’s what the Remakes should’ve been, taking the weaker aspects of what came before and improving upon them. And if there were no Weak Aspects…. don’t remake them.

My biggest problem with these things is that people see these movies, think they're okay, and then they are forgotten in 27 seconds after some new tik tok trend is invented. Also when I saw Son of the Mask and the Last Airbender movie in the same video and I reached levels of ptsd I haven't had in years.

It's always a 40 to 60 ratio of good outcomes vs. bad outcomes when it comes to sequels. Trying to reboot, remake, or add another chapter to an already existing story is difficult, especially if the writers have no idea what they're doing. But sometimes, the people can get it right, if they care enough and are invested/knowledgeable enough about the previous works and base franchise.

There are different kinds of sequels. There are franchises which are kinda built with sequel potential (Indiana Jones goes on more adventures, Michael Myers isn't done killing people yet, look out because there's another War in those Stars!), and then there are movies that have to restart everything and can only add an asterisk onto what was clearly designed as the end of the franchise (see every Terminator flick since T2).

I think it's the paranoia of having things forgotten that fuel these sequels and remakes. Probably someone out there who doesn't know how to act like an adult git salty over a child saying "What's that?" at their favorite childhood movie that was everywhere in the 80's or something. I know that feeling because on of my nephews doesn't know what Gargoyles was, then he said he didn't like it because it looked like "It was drawn with a marker." We're all becoming boomers way to fast.

@Diamondbolt I have to say at 2:23 You have a very fair point... I have not been to see a movie in quite a while, Thanks to the pandemic of course... But even then, What makes me choose which movie to watch? Got to go BACK, WAY BACK to 1989... Batman - Two things, The Trailers looked F**KING AMAZING and The Stars, Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton! Spaceballs - Its Mel Brooks... Need I say more! Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace - Come on, It's Star Wars and I am 49... I grew up on Star Wars! OK! Lets try recent... Errrr... God I cannot think of one! Thats BAD! The obvious is Star Wars: The Force Awakens but we already covered that! Honestly, Familiarity 100%, A Good Trailer helps... And that is also one of the biggest issues in my view - Many Trailers are simply NOT GOOD NOW! I actually enjoyed Alien 3... Mainly as the Trailer was SO GOOD... Totally different to the film we got but IT WORKED! Contrast and compare Terminator: Genysis - Gave away the entire plot so I did not need to spend money to see the movie - And that the problem with 99% of Movie Trailers! Watch the Trailer and save your money! As for Remakes, Reboots and Reimaginings... Simple - MONEY! They are already known properties that have a core audience who will want to see what is done new, and they will bring a younger audience who have never seen the original! I don't mind Reboots etc as long as they are done Well... THE BLOB (1988) is a PERFECT EXAMPLE! The 1950 version is Awesome, The Remake is also AWESOME! It does just enough to make it stand on its own, but also stays faithful to the original... And thats the key for a GOOD remake! Then you have Disney, Carbon Copy Live Action / CGI Remakes that have no purpose when you can watch the Original and enjoy it more!

The biggest reason why they keep making remakes no matter how bad they may be, is because of the *Overseas* Market. When the original movies came out, (in India atleast) going to the theatres was a rich people thing and coupled with the fact the English movies was seen only in the 3 biggest cities. Now as the remakes are coming out, the situation has significantly improved, more middle class people are pouring into theatres and watching Hollywood movies, making them more successful than the originals.
