I adore this movie. It manages to be a very very faithful adaptation (I think it might include more actual text from the novel than any other), but with a wonderful warm muppety magic. Michael Caine is incredible. He nails it utterly.

The two "old guys" are named Statler and Waldorf. Statler played Jacob Marley. Waldorf played Robert Marley. The pair are named after two landmark New York hotels, the Statler Hilton and the Waldorf Astoria. In fact, Waldorf's ex-wife is named Astoria. As to which is which, Waldorf is the one with the rounder face, white hair and a moustache.

The Muppets are fabulous, of course. But the key to this movie is Michael Caine. He absolutely believes that the Muppets are real. He plays this like it's a serious drama. That makes this the best adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

I’m so glad you guys enjoyed this. Michael Caine decided to treat the muppets like people for a better performance. The opposite was done in Treasure Island. Where Tim Curry was treated like a muppet. Please check out Muppets Treasure Island at some point!

It also makes a contrast between the serious dramatic Scrooge with drama and feelings, against the silly and wacky muppets (though they also are capable to show feelings and non-comedic drama from time to time, especially with Kermit as Bob Cratchit and Robin Frog as Tiny Tim, they give tears of both sadness and joy, especially during Bless Us All and Bob's speech about Tiny Tim to the rest of the family), which gives layers to the story, instead of being straight-up Muppet movie (without sacrificing the trademark humor The Muppets are known for).

Kermit the Frog was voiced by Steve Whitmire. This was the first time Steve played Kermit and he was nervous about doing it. But the night before filming started, he had a dream in which he was sitting in a theater and Jim Henson's ghost came and sat beside him and put his hand on Steve's shoulder and told him, "You've got this. You're going to do fine", and that helped Steve get over his fear.and he's performed Kermit's voice ever since. When Michael Caine was chosen to play Scrooge, he said he was going to play the part straight, like he was performing for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

I love Scrooge's expression at 2:38; turning to the crowd as if he's thinking "YOU WHAT, MATE?!". And it's very realistic that the crowd gets lost as a result; if Michael Caine turned and gave _me_ that look, I'd run for my life!

This was the very first version of “A Christmas Carol” I ever saw. That’s why it is my favorite version. Though after watching so many versions of this story, there are a few things i wish they did differently here. 1. Include Scrooge’s sister Fan as she played a huge part in the story. 2. Have Annie Sue Pig play the oldest Cratchit daughter, Martha 3. More Muppet cameos from character cameos of Scooter, Hilda, Mildred, Nigel, Crazy Harry, Wayne, Wanda, and Miss Mousey

I will say before I even start this that I hope you guys watched the original version. They cut a song out that absolutely makes no sense to cut. The song is beautiful, makes everything tie together nicely, and even has a reprise at the end. As far as I know the DVD released pre 2005 and the VHS ate the only ones to have it. I imagine you watched the version without it. But it's so worth it to re-watch it with the song. You can also find the song on KZread I think. It's called "When Love is Gone."

Here's a fun little story, in the commentary on the DvD/BlueRay, the crew mentioned a story about how children would ask "What did Scrooge's rat workers do that was so bad, for them to get coal?" The crew forgot about Santa giving coal to bad children (actually Krampus gives coal, a different story merged with Santa).

This is such a clever and funny version of the story. It has surprisingly touching moments ( the power of Dickens' storytelling. He is my favorite author!) My favorite joke in this film is That there is a Jacob and Robert Marley! That's hilarious. Jacob and Bob Marley! Lol lol! Very clever! There is another Christmas movie very much worth watching as soon as you can. Its called "The Man Who Invented Christmas." It's loosely based on the life of Charles Dickens and explores how and why he wrote this legendary story. You still learn facts about Charles Dickens most people don't know unless they've read biographies of the man. He was a complicated and remarkable man. He didn't just write moral stories. His stories and their themes were deeply personal and explored because of experiences in his own life. He was a devout Christian committed to the "good works" incumbent upon all who believe in and follow Jesus Christ. His call was the call of James, the brother of Jesus, let all who believe ( most especially) and all people in general remember that love is more than an emotion. Rather, it is affection so deep for all people that we give self-sacrificially to others and never ignore those is need. A life lived of care for others is the definition of what it means to "keep Christmas." Indeed, such a life exemplifies the love and messages of Christ. It is service to others that is also service and love to God and reflects a Christ-like attitude of love, and action. Its what Jesus called, in Scripture, the "true religion." This is the heart and soul of most of what Charles Dickens wrote and is why he is my favorite author. Here again, our youth need to read these classics and learn the lessons of such elevated themes and to inculcate their lessons and employ them in life for the betterment of ALL people! They are not educated until they read these classics.

Loved the muppets since I was a kid, especially watching re-runs of The Muppet Show at my grandparents on VHS and BetaMax. I also loved the first Muppet Movie, Great Muppet Caper and especially this movie. I remember my family and I going to the theater to see this. If you like A Christmas Carol I recommend both "Scrooge" (starring Albert Finny) and "The man who invented Christmas".

"Your doomed scrooge, doomed for all time! Your future is a horror story written by your crimes Your chains are forged, by what you say and do So have your fun, when life is done, a nightmare waits for you" This line has stuck with me since i saw this movie as a kid The chains we cannot see that grow or break based on what we say and by our actions Whether we only take, or give back, to make mankind our bussiness and share in the warmth it brings, or to forgoe mankind and spend existence in the compnay of no one and cold... Dickens had a huge effect on me, but this film as a kid really sold the idea, "where freedom comes from giivng love, Oh prison comes with hate!"

This was a great reaction and commentary! It's just such a good adaptation, it's so much fun while still having the heart of the story. I loved that you guys really talked about the whole thing. If you want to see another musical version of A Christmas Carol that is slightly more serious, as it's all people/no muppets, there's the version with Kelsey Grammar - kzread.info/dash/bejne/n5uGvKeLisLTec4.html It's my favorite version. I love how they play out Scrooge's past and his family in it. I also really like the music. A bunch of the actors are musical stage/film actors.
