So we could use iels ^^ Actually we're talking a lot about inclusive language right now in France but the government reaaallyyyy don't like it. But the history of grammatical gender in France is actually very interesting! For example, when there is a man and several women, we commonly use the masculine plural. We learn in school "le masculin l'emporte sur le féminin" which means basically that masculine wins against feminine which sounds highly sexist ^^ people think French has always been like that but it isn't true.

    I have a wholesome/amusing story that the binder text messages reminded me of. About 10 plus years ago, I used to exclusively cosplay guys so bought a binder and I also used to dress VERY "tomboy"ish (like super baggy clothes) and had my hair cut short. After several years of cosplaying guys, I decided to cosplay a couple of girl characters and thus didn't require my binder for that particular convention, so left it at home. Convention ended, mum picked me up at the train station to take me home (at like 10pm or something, it was fairly late) and pulled in to the petrol station so we could grab me quick food and so she could refill the car. We're at the checkout when mum turned to me and go "oh, you left your... your... your... boob-be-gone... your flat-flat bra... whatever it's called at home. Did you mean to?" The (male) cashier was like "?!?!?!" and I was like "it's called a binder, and yeah, I didn't need it" that was that, mum went back to the car whilst I bought my stuff, and the cashier was looking very thoughtful, and handed my stuff and went "here are your items... mister man" I did explain the situation, that I wasn't trans, but still feel that guy was very sweet to try and be mindful like that. Especially factoring in this was pre 2010 as well as the fact that I lived in an extremely rural, homophobic/sexist/basically-think-the-deep-south-but-without-the-hospitality area. And I call my binder "boob-be-gone" and "flat-flat bra"

    So I dont understand the issue people have with saying "they" for people. In writing, in society, etc, we have always used "they" to describe someone to either A. Being unsure of their gender or B. To keep it mysterious for whatever reason (like in writing). I use "they" if I am not sure, cuz easier and then no one can be offended. But now that NB/trans people use it as a permanent pronoun people are all up in arms like it is something new!

    For, like, 100 years out of the entire existence of english people believed a stupid rule about "he" being the default pronoun, until everyone decided that was absolutely stupid and made no sense and we went back to how it'd been the previous millenium or so. But we only decided to do that like 20 years ago and schools *jammed* these shitty grammar rules down the previous generations's throats, hard. And people use that as an excuse to be terrible.

    Comment on the one about multiple pronoun sets: I'm a demigirl who uses she/they/he pronouns. I think it's important to ask and not assume what someone means when they provide multiple sets. Personally, for me, that means that I'm cool with she/her, they/them, or he/him, and if you use one set exclusively, that's perfectly fine as long as I know you still perceive me as a demigirl and you're not using my multiple sets as a way to pretend I'm a different gender or something. As long as I know you're perceiving me the way I want to be and as long as you're respectful, any set is fine, even if you use it exclusively (this is why, despite she/her pronouns being a set I use, it sometimes makes me uncomfortable when hearing it from people I'm not out to). I do have friends who use all three for me, which is also fine with me. However, for other people, they might not want to be exclusively referred to with one set if they provide more. It's important to listen to people. If someone wants to be referred to using a mix of the pronouns they've provided, then you must do so. Other people's pronouns might change. So make sure to ask, even if you think you already know what someone means.

    I was thinking recently, of all the different body altering surgeries available, gender affirming surgery is the only one where you have to under go extensive psychological counselling before you get it. It’s also got by far the lowest regret and/or reversal rate, seriously low like 0.05% vs an average of 40% for elective cosmetic surgery. Maybe we should require counselling before any elective cosmetic surgery?

  • @StephenBoothUK

    @StephenBoothUK

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@ashtons8626 From what I’ve read a big problem with elective cosmetic surgeries is that someone feels unhappy or distressed and fixates on a feature that they need to get ‘fixed’, for example they decide that if they get their nose fixed then they will be happy. So they get their nose fixed but are still unhappy because it wasn’t their nose that was the problem. Then they think it’s some other body part so they get some work done on that, and are still unhappy. The process continues because they are trying to fix the wrong thing. As I understand it, the counselling that trans people receive is intended to confirm that they are indeed trans and are not misinterpreting their feelings and the issue they are facing is not that they are trans but something else. There are forms of body dysmorphia that are not gender dysphoria but someone who is not aware of them may interpret as gender dysphoria. We can’t know how another person actually feels in their body but if they describe something that feels a bit like what we feel then it’s tempting to think that we may have what they have. It would be interesting, and maybe telling, to know what proportion of people who initially identify as possibly trans work out through counselling that there is a different cause of their unhappiness and when they get the proper support for that are able to feel right in themselves. If someone has gender dysphoria then they should be able to access the treatments and surgeries that will address that, but if they don’t have gender dysphoria then transitioning is unlikely to help and may actually make things worse as they’ve done the thing that they thought would make them feel better and it didn’t. Maybe the current level required is excessive, but that is an argument for reviewing and amending the counselling rather than throwing it away completely.

    There's a 1966 movie with Haley Mills called "The Trouble with Angels". It's about a catholic girls' school and the troublemaker in attendance. They take a trip into town for undergarments. One of the older, more conservative nuns refers to them as "binders". She is told she is too old-fashioned; they are called "brassieres". So binders in the context of Trans-men is a new use of the word. (they still functioned as binders, only in service of the "ideal" feminine shape in certain fashion eras.)

    I had a friend tell me that they chose their name and I didn't understand at first cause that kind of stuff was kept under the rug at my old school. I've discovered that I am much happier at my public school because you can list your preferred pronouns and there are many people that are a part of the LGBTQ+ community. I'm not quite sure what I am yet, but I think through the internet and my school I can figure it out. I mostly just suck up the information like a sponge because I don't want to be misinformed.

    Instead of the normal "me trans? No!" Thing I didn't know what being trans was so I was 13 and like "look at me! So girly! Such a girly girl I am sooo girly!" And the next year just after turning 14 I met a trans guy and was all "panick!" Because I had been trying to force myself to be feminine thinking my feeling would go away with time and then I realised that they never would and I'd always feel like a man. And just a few months before that I had caved and gotten all of my skirts and dresses and tight fitting cloths in a fit of "fuck it!" 3:41 That one hit me pretty hard too. But also kind of made me feel a little better. My first appointment with a phycologist is coming up soon and I'm transitioning (or at lest planning to) some what late in life. I worked for a long time to get around what aversion therapy from when I was little did to me, at lest well enough to admit who I am. So it's like I've waited all this time and now every second feels like an hour. But the fact that the meme exists at all and your reaction to it at lest reminds me that I'm not alone. It's sometimes hard to keep that in mind after all these years of being alone with this and being afraid to tell anyone and what they might say or do. So I guess what I'm trying to say in a rambling kind of way is thank you for this channel. You and others like Samantha, Noah, and whoever that wonderful person is what made that meme. Which seems like a thought pulled straight out of my brain right now, help me feel not so alone just by doing what you all do.

    In college I took a professional editing class. My professor took a day and a half to talk about singular they and neopronouns. She even offered extra credit to those who went to my school's LGBT+ Group's Pronoun Day and wrote a short essay about it. There were some people who didn't understand neopronouns and singular they, so she ended up talking about why pronouns were important to individuals and why we should ask for a person's pronouns before interviewing them. She also had us do an assignment in which we used all different types of pronouns and how to correctly use them. My heart.
