Mouth exercises for CLEAR SPEECH
Learn the secret exercises actors use to speak with a clear and crisp voice. Improving your pronunciation and spoken English isn't just about learning theory. You can make yourself more understood by simply training your mouth muscles so that you can produce the sounds of English properly. After all, if you've been speaking another language your whole life, your mouth and tongue are probably trained in a different way, to make the sounds of that language, not English. In this video, I'll go through many exercises you can do to get your mouth used to making the sounds of English clearly. This will improve your accent, clarity, and make you a better English speaker.

TRANSCRIPT
Hi there and welcome back to engVid. Today's lesson is to make sure that you are understood, because you could learn all the vocabulary in the world, but if you're not being understood by speaking clearly, then there's very little point. So today's lesson is to teach you a few exercises to ensure that your speech is as crisp and clear as possible.
Now, I've got a number of exercises which I've written up on the board which are to help strengthen the muscles in your face and your mouth to help your speech become clear. Now, the words, and sentences, and phrases written up here are not meant to make sense. Okay? So this is not a language lesson. If you're not sure of what a word means, then I suggest look it up in a dictionary, but it may be a word that is not currently used in English, contemporary English. And the other thing I wanted to point out is that it's not just going to be by watching this video that you become clear. I will show you a number of exercises, but if you really want to take it to a next level, you will have to go off and see a voice teacher who will then be able to say to you: "You need to focus on your s sounds", or: "You need to focus on your d sounds", but then you have these exercises to help you. I hope that's clear.
Okay, so I will go through this once slowly, and then I'll do it at full speed. The aim with these articulation exercises is to go nice and slowly so that you're getting each sound correctly, and then to start doing it as fast as you can, because that really works the muscles. Okay?
So, in the top left of your screen you'll see this is an exercises for... An exercise for s sounds, p sounds, c sounds, and to some extent, b and d as well. Ready? Let's go. "To sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark, dock. In a pestilential prison with a life-long lock. Awaiting the sensation of a short, sharp, shock. From a cheap and chippy chopper on a big, black block." Okay. I'll now do this at full speed. "To sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark, dock. In a pestilential prison with a life-long lock. Awaiting the sensation of a short, sharp, shock. From a cheap and chippy chopper on a big, black block." Okay?
And on to our t and d sounds. So, t and d is used with the tongue going up towards what is called the alveolar ridge in your mouth. So you should feel your tongue going up to get this sound correctly. Again, slowly and then at full speed. "In tooting two tutors astute tried to toot a duke on a flute. But duets so gruelling and only in duelling when tutors astute toot the flute." That should say "toot", let's put another t there. Again. "In tooting two tutors astute tried to toot a duke on a flute. But duets so gruelling and only in duelling when tutors astute toot the flute." Weird.
Okay, and on to m, h, and i. "She stood on the balcony..." Okay? So try to get that "l" there, the "l" rising up to the roof of your mouth. "Inexplicably mimicking", so the m sound: "mmm", lips together. Mmm. "Mimicking him hiccupping", so a nice open mouth of "h", "h", for the h sound. "Hiccupping and amicably welcome... Welcoming him home." It's quite hard to get the "ing" there. "Welcoming him home. She stood on the balcony inexplimy-..." Got it wrong. Start again. "She stood on the balcony inexplicably mimicking him hiccupping and amicably welcoming him home." Okay? So you really got to move your mouth to get that... Those sounds correctly.
I've put f, v, and "th" together because you must make sure that there is a difference between your "th" sounds and your f and your v. This is something I learnt after a long... Lots of long, hard practice at drama school, but it... You know, your "th", your tongue has to go up to the top of your mouth, and sort of tick, tick the teeth. "Ff", okay? The f and v sound is more made by... You got your lip there, and air coming out. "Five flippant Frenchmen fly from France for fashions. Five flippant Frenchmen fly from France for fashions".

i should probably read aloud (making podcast recordings) and not only off-the-cuff speech -- the two are so different! A few years ago, I had the wrong assumption that I was a clear speaker. But I rested on my laurels and I was stunned to hear how awful and lisping and slurring my speech had become, playing back a late night recording. It took months of intensive work to correct, especially off-the-cuff speaking. I did daily podcast recording, both reading aloud and off-the cuff. A couple years later, my speech is reliably cleaned up and no longer a prominent issue BUT I will always try hard and never again rest on my laurels and take clear, clean speech skills for granted.

I'm fluent in English and learning other languages in my spare time, but even in my language I have terrible annunciation. And growing up having people constantly have trouble understanding me has made me shell up and made the problem even worse and I barely talk to people anymore. Well the first step is wanting fix it and finding out what I can do about it. Thank you for doing this series. Hopefully this will help me in the long run. ✊✊

I'm a traumatic brain injury survivor. I was in a coma for 6 weeks, with a survival chance of less than 50%, after I got into my car accident in November 2017. I would say I was very articulate, with a sharp tone, prior to my accident. Upon the initial stages of my recovery, my speech was about 5%, maybe 10%, of pre-accident. Every word came out of my mouth was slurred and slow. I was so disgusted and feeling hopeless, I thought about ending my life. I bumped into this video in May/June of 2018, thought it might potentially help, as I was searching for everything, ANYTHING to recover my speech, to sounds like who I used to be. I would go through this video every morning, before speaking to anyone (everything is fully memorized/automatic now, I would occasionally come back here, for the minor details). Now, when it comes to speech, I am now at 80%-90% of who I used to be. I am SO BLESSED, AND GRATEFUL to you, Ben, THANK YOU!!!!!!

Ty ❤ so glad i came across your video, after having a stroke. I have bells palsy on right side as well.
This seems very useful. Definitely going to improve my articulation once and for all! I think the way I'd describe my problem is having a lazy tongue/lazy mouth, living with such a condition makes my life Hell almost on a daily basis. I'm pretty damn sure people often think I am retarded because of the way I speak, so subconsciously I end up talking much quieter because I don't want to draw attention to my speech, but this is a big mistake.. I am now practising vocal exercises, recording my own voice and listening back to it so I can try and pin point on how I can improve my speech, staying well hydrated and even singing along to songs..(when no one is around, lol). I'm basically doing all I can on my own at the moment, haven't gone to any speech therapy classes or anything but I aim to become understood when I talk because I've had it up to my eyeballs with everyone saying "What?" multiple times when I'm speaking. The worst of all though is when someone will say to someone else right in front of me "What did he say?", as if I am so far away from their spectrum that I will not hear or understand them... it makes me feel so pathetic and different, I am unable to enjoy my life like this. End of rant. Thanks for the upload mate, you earned a sub! :)

However it is comforting to know there are others with the same problem as me, like you I thought I was the only one too! There was something I was looking into that may help and make a huge difference, look up "Diaphragmatic breathing", if you can learn this it apparently helps you to project your voice more and such. Welcome aboard!
I believe I have a speech impediment as I suffer from lisp but I also grew up saying words like tractor like "chractor" and it sounds awful and a lack of confidence with my speaking makes me nervous so i dont carry confidence in my voice either im hoping this video works

Well you know what to do then
This is really helpful cuz people always go like "HUH" or "Say that again" or "What did you just say" and stuff like that whenever I speak. It literally happens a minimum of 20 times a day in school lol. It's really annoying. I'll grind this and hopefully I'll stop speaking like an absolute mong

@@7860092 Yeah it helped me quite a bit. Apparently I've been speaking too quick and I haven't been opening my mouth enough when speaking. Now I speak slower and more clear and people tend to understand what I say pretty much all the time.

@@engvidBenjamin Yeah I know. But I wish I could speak clearly like most of my friends and family. It's really bothering me that I can never tell stories or anything like that because in the middle of the story I start to studder and my voice becomes shaky and unclear and I start lisping and speaking super quickly..

I don't hesitate to express my thoughts and make a conversation but it's with me naturally that sometimes I find it hard to pronounce some specific letters a bit hard while speaking like the use of 'd' and 't'. I'm not short of words but my mouth gets clogged as if it's locking by itself and make not clear sentences. I'll work on my speech technique by the help of your videos
