Mountaineering: Decision-making in the death zone | FREDRIK STRÄNG | TEDxLimassol

Shortly before midnight on July 31, 2008, 25 climbers began the ascent of the world's second highest and technically demanding mountain - K2. Two days later, eleven are dead and several seriously injured. The accident is a human tragedy and an example of a project where decision-making meant life or death. Fredrik is a Swedish mountain climber, adventurer and documentary filmmaker. His passion for climbing derives from his fear of heights, confronting his trauma in a functional way. He enjoys his precious time on the planet as an explorer rather than spending a life in survival mode. For Fredrik, climbing is about mindfulness, like opening his eyes for the very first time. He is thankful for the moments when he climbed and woke up. As an explorer Fredrik believes in facing one’s fears and chasing one’s dreams. - he has therefore climbed seven 8000m peaks and 7 Summits in 191 days. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I have watched so many videos on this tragedy. His decision making was a good balance of being smart but also showing compassion. Some really tough decisions had to be made by many

Such a tragic outcome from events that could at best have been avoided. Thank you for sharing your thought provoking experience and insight. We all need to listen and learn from the wisdom. This story gives me a deeper understanding of how important it is also with preparation on the mental level, before difficult physical and technical challenges. The implication that the protection of life and safety requires respect for and compliance with well-proven routines and rules may seem self-evident. But it probably takes more mental strength than one might think to control the situation and oneself if one's own judgment is exposed to extreme circumstances and seemingly nothing can go wrong.
