Mountain Lion Screams! Two Cougars Calling Out To Each Other And Striking Up A Courtship

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Two cougars looking for love in all the right places in the Angeles National Forest and then striking up a courtship in the canyon.
This is the story of two lions looking for each other in the night, and both of them are heard and seen caterwauling in the forest, as they get closer to finding each other. I recently shared a video of these two big cats on a date, in the daytime, passing by my creek cameras. Well this is the night before, where you see them in a canyon, several miles away, calling out to each other, eventually meeting up minutes later, and then passing by my camera, together as a “puma power couple.”
This is so special to see and so reassuring that the lion population is thriving and will continue. As it should.

The reason this hits home with me is when I was 18-years-old I was camping in the mountains of Colorado . It began to rain so I zipped up my bag and finally dozed off. After a while I was awakened by what I thought was a woman screaming within a few feet of me. I was petrified and called out to the darkness. I sat up trying to determine what had just happened. After hearing this video, I now know that it was a mountain lion. The screams sounded exactly like what I heard. I sat still for the rest of the night but heard nothing. I just turned 70 a few days ago and finally the mystery is solved.

My wife and I were outside one evening and heard something similar to this only longer lasting each time. We thought it was a woman screaming, but our dogs went ballistic. They freaked out and the hair on the back of their necks puffed up like a lion’s mane. We knew what it was then. For three days the dogs walked patrols around our house. Never did anything like this before we heard it. They’re outside dogs, but we tried to get them to come in for a few days. They wouldn’t stay in. Wanted to guard, I guess.

On our ranch,we hear them calling every so often up in the hills,to keep them away from the calves and chickens, our dogs are trained to start barking like crazy, cougars don’t like noisy dogs and stay away,it’s worked for the last 50 yrs.we’ve gotten 100’s of pics of cougars on our place since we installed game cameras on borders of our place,we were out on horseback one day , a visitor asked what kind of bird was chirping,he said it’s making my horse nervous,I’ll tell you when we get back to the corrals,he didn’t believe me when I told him it was a cougar, showed him some game cam videos with audio of a cat chirping ,after all these years they still make the hair stand up on the back of my neck.

I was living in a new house in the woods about 25 miles from Syracuse, New York, in the middle of the state, not the Adirondack or Catskill mountains. I heard what sounded like a drunk woman shouting "ow, ow, OW!" behind my house, 2AM. I almost called 911 until the ow, ow, OW crescendoed in a scream that was clearly not human. The neighbors tried to tell me it was a bobcat. Bobcats don't sound like that. 10 years later a man going in to a small cemetery set back from the road saw a panicked deer run into the clearing, followed by a cougar. He decided his late wife didn't need flowers that day and turned the car around. I always told new people to keep their pets in at night, but the cemetery sighting was in broad daylight.

Years ago in the 60's growing up in California, ( not to far from the Sacramento river) my mom & dad would go night fishing for cat fish & l'll never forget this one time, they had a fire goin on the bank,( keep the 🦟 skeeters at bay) & it was after midnight, when All the sudden strange noises were coming from behind us, my dad told us all to get in car & he & mom were packing stuff up & this Mountain Lion was a ways away,& you could see its greenish- goldish eyes shining from the glare of the fire some distance away from it!! Well, dad & mom hurried to the car & locked the doors & that damm thing kept us there till sunrise-- no B.S😱, to me it sounded like a baby crying😬- it ened up in a cottonwood tree next to our car-- talk about an EXPERIANCE I never forgot🤪🐆, for Reals,

Heard these same sounds and more in Yosemite around 1:00AM this past Friday. It started with the one off calls and then escalated to multiple cougars making extremely loud distressed sounds for about 60 seconds. This stopped for about 2 minutes and then started up again for another minute. My fellow campers and I assumed they were either fighting or mating. Either way it was quite chilling to hear from our tent! Phenomenal work, thanks for sharing for all of us to get this beautiful intimate look at these incredible creatures.

We had two females with juveniles sharing territory but they didn't want any other cats passing through to stay. Unfortunately, both with their offspring, got killed at different times about 3 mos apart on the busy highway across the valley. A new cat has recently come through and got my lead goat, a couple weeks ago. 😢 We've never had a predation before, although several neighbors have.

And then I see what you have done, SO impressive! You do the hard work of maintaining many cameras, hiking deep into the forest over and over again in all seasons to service them, and then spend the hours it takes to knit together a story, complete with captions so we know what's going on. You are educating the world about these wonderful and wild creatures. There's no other way we'd get such a close look at their actual lives. Thank you from the bottom of my heart 💜🫶🙏🏼

I lived along side cougars, bears etc. They eat deer mainly, we lived peacefully side by side. Two vocalized walking around where my dogs were at night, saying, "We're coming through, leave us alone and we'll leave you alone." Never did any harm. It's the entitled humans that ruined the area. Destroyed bear dens, black bears don't excavate their own dens, use what's there from before. Killed the beavers on the creek also. Then talked about spending tens of thousands of dollars to build catchment basins and riffles to retain water in summer to help wildfire fighting. Creek water used to put out cabin fire, kept it out of the forest we lived in. I miss all the critters.

Its so cool and scary knowing these cats are out there roaming around. We had one hanging out on our land one winter thru summer. I saw its tracks in the snow. Then in summer, i was picking berries and i heard a loud panting sound, it was very hot. I could tell it was very close and trying to be quiet. I didnt feel like i was being stalked but i left anyway! It left one day when my Dad was using chainsaw to cut dead wood. Must've disturbed it cuz i saw it cross the path i was on and jump up the bank and over the fence. Quietly and effortlessly. My dog knew the cat was coming before I did cuz he got as close to the ground as he could. As soon as I asked him what was wrong, I i saw the cat. It was so very cool! ❤ We also have a bobcat that hangs out regularly. Many pics of it on trail cam. ❤

Have heard this several times in north Central Pennsylvania,,,,,, although our state game commission says they don't exist. The calling and sightings usually happen in the last fall.

Robert thank you for the excellent storyline of the cats mating ritual. I have a cats behind my house in Louisiana that I’ve heard caterwauling for past few years. The first year I was like WHAT IS THAT. Saw video of another cat and once you know there’s no mistaking it anymore. Excellent video content and production.

They are so beautiful and so lovely to see them together. I hope they and their (future) family always stay safe. They (eastern cougar) are extinct where I come from due to hunting, logging, human settlements etc. :(

We live in foothills of Colorado beside wilderness and my neighbors often think fox calls are from mountain lions. Yours is a great example of cat calls. It’s easy to confuse them for fox but I can hear the difference - cats being cat-like. This is beautiful, I’m so jealous of your camera set up!

I like the stories all the people are making in the comment section that have experienced hearing mountain lions, I have had the same experiences many times, as others here are commenting about.... in fact my whole neighborhood was up half the night listening to the mountain lions that were no more than 500 ft away from the house is in the forest in California in Nevada County I love mountain lions I have a huge mountain lion picture collection of them....they are beautiful they never did bother us though they even would walk through our yard and sit in our yard screaming but they never hurt any of us that doesn't mean that they wouldn't if we were wandering around in the dark at night out in their territory like I would never do something stupid like that

Never heard any of the screams but last weeks three sightings middle of night locally in roads and parking lots close to my apartment complex(nearby your area). But...the odd high pitched chirps ?? Never knew. No longer taking walks in middle of the night. Saw one running by...at least 6 ft.nose to tail. Getting bolder seen sauntering in parking lots no more than 200 ft from my door. twice past few weeks. OK by me if someone posts signage warning because the increase in transients hanging about is getting annoying.
