Mountain Biking to Stoodley Pike Using the Pennine Bridleway, Mary Townley Loop and Pennine Way

Spring is tuning up but winter is definitely still on stage giving it full gas on the outro! But the warmer, longer days will be here soon enough.
A little 'stop the week' MTB ride out on my local Pennine trails. It's been quite a while since I went right up to this summit.
Happy cycling, folks!

I think you should 1.) Show a paper map with a marker showing the route, much like Itchyboots does on her Honda travels. 2.) Show more scenery and fewer closeups of the host, that scenery, even without a tree in sight at times is simply wonderful, and no host can compete with it. Now... on your bike.😮

I make no promises, Frank 😉... but interesting to hear you like to see a map on videos. I'm just figuring out a way of doing this that I'm happy with and that isn't too time consuming. Might be a bit of trial and error on the maps front in the next videos on the channel. Happy cycling!

A proper adventure with a classic summit for an objective. I was wondering which way you were going to tackle it. Superb trails cutting from Walsden to the Shepherd's Rest - those miles cost a lot more than road riding so it's no wonder you were feeling it towards the end. As you said, it's a full body workout on a hardtail. In the early 2000s I had a run-in with a large walking club on Stoodley who were very vocal about the lack of bike access at the top so it's definitely wise to pick a quiet 'off peak' timeslot. Your outing looked perfect - deserted almost.

I've only ever had one encounter with a slightly aggressive rambler saying 'don't you know this isn't a Bridleway' (couple of years ago now) and I got the impression he was just having a bad day overall. It's a tricky one as sometimes a short section of footpath can link up a ride nicely but like you say definitely best to keep all that off peak if possible. One other walker at the monument briefly and a couple of fell runners along the tops and that's about as crowded as it got! 🙂

Amazing ride! I rode up Horseshoe pass on the same day. Catching the wind side on, especially when travelling downhill at speed was challenging to say the least. Rewarding and it blows the cobwebs away 😁

Cheers, Paul. Gusty sidewinds are tricky for us cyclists, aren't they? I remember being blown all over the road up on Rannoch Moor a few years back, with little choice but to press on as carefully as I could and get to more sheltered sections. Definitely blows the cobwebs away! 🙂

This looks like a great ride. I’ll have to come and do it with you someone Martin. Less wind though ideally 😂

Cracking little route, yes. I was pretty glad to get off the tops and out of that wind at the end. Not really forecast and seemed to come from nowhere. Catch up soon, mate. 🙂

After I put the camera away at the end the sidewind got pretty intense for that last half mile or so to the road descent. Must have been leaning over about 30 degrees and to go straight I had to turn the handlebars as the wind was blowing the back wheel out. Felt like I was on a slow moving speedway motorcycle in places. All good fun though!

Great filming - tracks looking at bit precarious at times - maybe I'm just getting old!

Thanks, Andy. A few tricky sections but I go pretty slow these days so plenty of time to pick the good lines. Happy cycling!
