Mountain Bike And Handmade Trailer Finally Finished!
Mountain bikes can carry a lot of camping or bushcraft gear, add a trailer and you can carry enough to live in the wilderness for a long time! Anyway, I thought I had everything covered with my two bikes and trailers. Then, I bought a WW2 Army cot thats large and weighs 26 pounds. I then came across a free junk mountain bike and decided it was time for a new bike and trailer. I found some old folding chairs in the ditch beside the road and decided to cut them up and make a trailer out of them.

I am an old disabled ex-army vet, and what I did because I am limited in what I can do is, I have a trike sports rider 3 wheeler disability scooter, however it just can't carry all my needs when I go sea fishing, so I bought from amazon one of those wire type garden trailers for at the time under £80 I also bought a bicycle trailer hitch, the male end went on the trailer where normally the hand puller goes, didn't need that so kept for some other project, the female end of the hitch went on the back of the scooters rear bar, I just used self tapping screws, and so far I have clocked up a fair few miles running to the nearest sea beach it carries all I need and I made a folding table for my gas cooker and prepping food the table is just two wooden slabs hinged together and self tappers screwed into the square tubing, if the worst comes to the worst I now can bug out, it is supposed to do around 22 miles, but in the near future I will put two more marine batteries in the trailer as it is 24 volts that should give me quite a few miles more and I would cut the speed limiter and be able to scoot away from bad people. Remember no welding involved at all, Jim from Scotland. love your trailer and bike.

A few suggestions if I may: Inside the tubing, you could fit aluminium rods to be used as shelter props. Say 4 x props to make two ends of an A frame. Make yourself 3 or 4 large waterproof bags to fit snug inside the frame. If they're not waterproof, then just cover with a specially made tarp. And finally, try an electric mountain bike Dave. You just can't beat them. They're getting better and better now. Much more efficient. With a spare battery you'll be able to get 60+ miles out of them. They're also a lot safer if you need to get back if you're injured, bitten by a snake whatever. They're excellent for uphill and for carrying heavy loads. Worth considering.

I love your innovative ideas for repurposing discarded trash! Appears to handle well even with all that immense weight bestowed upon it. As far as wilderness living goes, this is the next best thing to a horse! A bike packing trip is half art, half science and a whole lot of brute force, so roll with it. Remember rules are made to be broken and bike packers are rebellious! I enjoyed watching, thank you, Dave. Stay lifted & enjoy your weeks end...! See ya next time.

What’s good about this is that, let’s say you and Nick were out backpacking and trail riding and either you or he gets really badly hurt and the only way out is to put you in the cart and pedal out of there. In that case the cart becomes like an ambulance and it would need to be sized to fit a man. I know it won’t be comfortable, but opposed to leaving a man behind to look for help, it’s a valid option
@Reallybigmonkey1
Ай бұрын
I never even thought about that but you have a very valid point!
Awsome, Dave, just Awsome. Loved every second of how you developed this, starting from the first thought: "it has to be able to carry my army-kod" to the second step: "Which trash(treasure) do I have that fits the idea" and look what came out... man what a Nice combo !!! Next to that I love to see someone thatkinda feels like a 'twin', that means a lot to someone who has always felt to be different. Your shop looks like my house 😅and I'm on the same project! my bike is in the livingroom, I'm restoring it and working on the trailer aswell. Since you made the trailer to haul your army cot and you have tubing left it wouldn't take much to make removable tubing brace/ bracket to hold the cot. You could even use a threaded rod with a flat plate welded on the bottom as stabilizers on the corners. Not sure if your cot has the brackets for the mosquito netting poles or if you'd need to add something. You could almost have a little camper. Sorry for rambling on again but your videos always gets these rusty old gears turning again. With all that said i love what you made. Thank you so much for sharing your ingenuity and building skills with us. God bless and stay safe.

Great build, Dave. Your bag idea worked better than I was thinking. While you were mocking it up, I thought that making a webbed "net" for the bottom and up the sides, velcroed or bunjeed in place. I like your bag idea better. Much more versatile. I liked the articulated hitch. Clever idea, should handle everything and take the load off the bike. I look at things the same way when I see things that others say trash. Love that old saying, one mans trash is another mans treasure. My wife hates it, till I come up with something for her. All this work, just so you can have a cot. Ha, welcome to old man camping !!! LOL I've gotta say, if there's a choice, I'll take the inflatable bed, fan and tent tgese days, over sleeping on the ground. My old bones and stiff muscles appreciate not sleeping on the ground. You did a great job and seems that you've got all you bases covered. Thanks for showing us your buikd process. Now I guess you know Nick is gonna want one. Remember, younger legs need less gear ! God bless y'all, my friend, and stay safe out there on your new wheels. Looking forward to seeing it in the field.

Thanks Brian, Im glad you liked it. The bag floor works but I may still make a webbing floor. Or a solid floor thats removable and serves as a table top!
