Mount Washington Cog Railway, New Hampshire, USA

Mount Washington is famous for its extreme weather and the cog railway. In the year 1999 when this video was recorded the railway was still 100% steam-powered.

As this railway was being built, the track laying crews crafted slide boards known as “devil’s shingles”, with room enough for one man and his tools. A walk down the mountain that could take hours in the infamously horrific weather took mere minutes. The first alpine railroad, and the first alpine slide!

That's the funkiest locomotive I've ever seen, I love it! It looks quite ancient, and it's a long slide down the mountain if a shaft key strips, although possibly there is a way to brake without the gearwheels.

There are brakes on the car gearwheels. The car has separate brakes. It is only pushed by the engine and not connected to it. The diesels are quite impressive as well. They were built by the railroad shop mechanics. One of the reasons for diesel is it costs $300 for the coal to get to the top of the mountain and only $30 for Diesel fuel.

I rode the cog railway at least twice when I went to summer camp in New Hampshire (five years, 1960,61,62,63, and 65). I enjoyed it because I liked Mountain climbing. I a;lso climbed Mt. Washington at least twice, too.

Most people don’t realize that Mt Washington has some of the worst weather in the US... Highest wind wind was recorded in the 1930s until it recently lost that title.. The Auto road, I went up in July once.. It was in the 90s at the bottom.. Could only go up 80% of the way as a blizzard was raging at the top..

I have been to the Summit twice on the Cog, once in the train and once there was a group of us who actually walked up and down tie after tie after tie. It's quite the deal on the train, but you appreciate it even more on foot. They had closed early that year (early 60s) because it was so dry and way to much fire hazard because of the sparks that can fly out with the smoke!

I grew up nearby in Vermont, so I remember riding this as a kid. Neat rail. Frankly, I think Mt. Washington is more fun to hike (climb) but the railway is a cool engineering feat. Also, for people who like this sort of stuff, the ultimate mountain cog rail that I've been on is the on that climbs the Jungfraujoch in Switzerland. That is an amazing train.

Walked around for about 10 minutes and out of no where ... the rains came down, and I mean came down! Everyone soaked and cold as breeze were more like take force winds! Kids crying, fussing and laying on floor as train slid on rails in a few parts... I was fearful and hung on for dear life!
