Mount Washington Cog Railway, New Hampshire, USA
Mount Washington is famous for its extreme weather and the cog railway. In the year 1999 when this video was recorded the railway was still 100% steam-powered.

As this railway was being built, the track laying crews crafted slide boards known as “devil’s shingles”, with room enough for one man and his tools. A walk down the mountain that could take hours in the infamously horrific weather took mere minutes. The first alpine railroad, and the first alpine slide!
That's the funkiest locomotive I've ever seen, I love it! It looks quite ancient, and it's a long slide down the mountain if a shaft key strips, although possibly there is a way to brake without the gearwheels.

There are brakes on the car gearwheels. The car has separate brakes. It is only pushed by the engine and not connected to it. The diesels are quite impressive as well. They were built by the railroad shop mechanics. One of the reasons for diesel is it costs $300 for the coal to get to the top of the mountain and only $30 for Diesel fuel.

For how long a period of months has this line been knocked out of line’ It seems very precarious
It still runs. WOW. It outlasted my parents. My parents were on there honeymoon and went on this thing a zillion years ago.

So Nice Old Is Always Diamond.
I rode the cog railway at least twice when I went to summer camp in New Hampshire (five years, 1960,61,62,63, and 65). I enjoyed it because I liked Mountain climbing. I a;lso climbed Mt. Washington at least twice, too.
This is amazing. I’ve never seen a cogged steam engine

Go to Jenbach in the Austrian Tyrol. The Achenseebahn is still 100% veteran steam rack locomotive operated. Also a very scenic ride plus you can usually see the scenery.

Most people don’t realize that Mt Washington has some of the worst weather in the US... Highest wind wind was recorded in the 1930s until it recently lost that title.. The Auto road, I went up in July once.. It was in the 90s at the bottom.. Could only go up 80% of the way as a blizzard was raging at the top..

I went in July too. It is super windy up there. And it got so foggy that we could not go to the summit. It’s scary, road is so narrow, so close the the edge...scarier if can’t see.

Superb and amazing Mt. Washington range.
Super filmik. Miło i przyjemnie się oglądało. Fajne widoki i fajne lokomotywy. Pozdrowienia dla autora filmu from Poland.
Aw, memories. My husband was a welder/ fabricator, etc back in the 80's there. Great end of the season parties. Miss the mountain.
Absolutely brillant video! 👌
Awesome training. Cheers!
Looks like one of those places where locals say: Don't like the weather? Wait 5 minutes. Neat video.
Wow amazing train and scenary!! 👍👍
I have gone up the Cog Railway severL times. It it so cool that they still keep the old girls running. They even used to get them fixed at H.K. Porter plant in Boston. H.K. porter used to make Train engines all the way up to the 1950s! My dad used to work at H.K.Porter.
The original hybrid vehicles are still running today. Steam will always be the driving force that powers the planet.
We were just there 2 weeks ago. Went to look at the leafs. Only went to the half way point at the water tower. 3000 odd feet. Still the view was beautiful. Going back in the summer. If you love trains this should be on your list.

Fantastic. I have never seen before this type of small steam engine, from India.
My late grandfather took me there in the early 2000s when one of our summer trips to New Hampshire. We also visited the Conway Scenic Railroad.
Большое спасибо.
Excellent training; awesome weather. Sehr wunderbar das ist. Prosit!
Superb 👍🏻
Incrível esta maquina para subir a montanha. Muito legal! Abraço. Rio de Janeiro Brazil
We’re very proud of our Cog Railway. They have since produced a series of diesel hydraulic locos entirely made on site using John Deere power plants. They do still run steam once a day I believe. The first train. If you’ve not visited NH to see the Cog you really need to. John. Chichester NH.

Yes, indeed! That railway might be a candidate for UN world heritage.
On the day we were there the summit was above the clouds, it was beautiful.

I have been to the Summit twice on the Cog, once in the train and once there was a group of us who actually walked up and down tie after tie after tie. It's quite the deal on the train, but you appreciate it even more on foot. They had closed early that year (early 60s) because it was so dry and way to much fire hazard because of the sparks that can fly out with the smoke!
I've been up the mt on the cogg and the auto road countless times !!!!!! Neva gets old !!!!!!!!!!
Love the whistle!
Quite an experience, we'll always remember !
I grew up nearby in Vermont, so I remember riding this as a kid. Neat rail. Frankly, I think Mt. Washington is more fun to hike (climb) but the railway is a cool engineering feat. Also, for people who like this sort of stuff, the ultimate mountain cog rail that I've been on is the on that climbs the Jungfraujoch in Switzerland. That is an amazing train.

I like mountain railways or cog railways if you want to say it like that but I’d prefer the snowdon mountain railway because of the engines are so unique because the cylinders are back to front and surprisingly the culdee fell mountain railway in the Railway Series is based on the snowdon mountain railway
great video
Nice view n great mechanical train.

great view from the top !!!!

Esse trem que sobe a montanha é interessante. Aqui no Rio de Janeiro o trem que subia a montanha convocado também era a vapor depois foi substituído por um trem elétrico Suíço e funciona até hoje. Abraço

Beautiful place and verry good lokomotif👍😎👍
This ride is so amazing but scary. Can be lovely day at bottom and raining at top. We had good trip up. Walked around for about 10 minutes and out of no where ... the rains came down, and I mean came down! Everyone soaked and cold as breeze were more like take force winds! Kids crying, fussing and laying on floor as train slid on rails in a few parts... I was fearful and hung on for dear life!
Did New England in summer 2018. This is one of the trips we took.
Live in NH and I’ve climbed Tuckermans to the top but never rode the cog.
Some lovely Things to see at top
