The Mount Washington Cog Railway

amzn.to/3zbbpaG - Kindle Paperwhite - #commissionsearned
It is the first cog railway in the world and in 2005 the carriages were pushed entirely by steam engines from the Victorian age. Today all but one or two of the engines are diesel powered. This is must see for all lovers of the steam age. I like the railway's quirkiness.

The sound of the engine going up the mountain sounds like a combination of a normal steam locomotive and a roller coaster

I wonder if anyone's tried making a dedicated snow-clearing front car for these kind of cog railways lol.

I believe they still use one of the steam locos daily but it was converted to run on diesel many years ago, for some reason they could or would not convert the other units. The Cog railway actually build custom diesel units to replace the steam ones. The coal fired ones are now museum pieces.

Is Old Peppersass still running? That’s what took our family up when we did the railway. We’ve driven up on the Auto Road, taken the Cog Railway up and me and my dad have hiked the Presidential range. Done everything but biked it.

That hasn’t ran since 1929 as far as I know. Are you sure you weren’t talking about one of their other steam engines (specifically the #2)?

Somehow, oil fired and diesel engines just aren't as impressive as the historical steam engine. We frequently take "steam engine" touristic rides just for the fun of taking a steam engine ride. Never did it for diesel engines......

Hitch all the steamers and all the cars together for one heck of an event and document it in DVD! I have yet to find a DVD online of nothing but the steam engines on this railway. If there is one I would like a link for it please.🙂

The cars don't actually couple to the engine. During the descent the engine and coach are often not even in contact. It's a very cool experience.

Why is it that despite the cold conditions there is no lagging on the dome, steam pipes or cylinders to minimise heat loss. And it looks like the engine crews gave up cleaning the running gear years ago!

The rack picks up grease from the gear on every engine. If it was clean, I would be concerned. The firebox on the coal fired engines runs white hot. There won't be any ice nearby.

There is lagging, it's just beneath an steel boiler jacket. External lagging on locomotives ended in like the 1840s, at least in the US.

why is it that on heritage railways with huge noisy locomotives with 115 decibel whistles they don't have to wear hearing protection, but the crew in the cab of this tiny little engine have to wear it?

  • @RockyRailroadProductions_B0SS

TheBrantfordRailfan Because these are actually really loud in the cab. You have four simple expansion cylinders feeding through a very short blastpipe to the smoke box. It shakes a bit too, but that's why it's fun!

+Oilsmoke Jones they did in other videos, but the stuff comming out is also tons of steam which goes up the pipe and provides drought on the fire to keep it going, well at least that was the case with latter 20th century locomotives, but as it were steam is usually nevera question on power it can provide plenty and can use any type of fuel that can be put into the firebox, mind you newer designs are more effecent boilers but since steam is a direct drive it dont tire like electo moters can and overheat, and the faster you run the better at making steam it is, as well as the hotter the fire the more expansion of volume you have in the steam and the better it is at providing power, at least that is the theory.

It uses the cylinders and friction brakes. There are actually two brake wheels in the coach. One remains pretty much steadily applied during the descent and the other is adjusted as required.
