This is a stunning view of Mount St. Helens. Love this video. As for David Johnston, while his remains have never been found, parts of the trailer he was using were found decades later when the new road going to the observatory was being constructed. Immediately after the eruption one of his colleagues found a few small personal effects close by the original site of the trailer. Somehow they had survived when larger things were shredded and blown down the ridge.

Your video makes me question what a “natural disaster” actually is. If it’s a natural and, now we know, recurring event, is it a disaster? Can an event that occurs in nature be considered a disaster? 🤔

It was today in 1980 that the unthinkable occurred in Washington - the eruption of Mount St. Helens Aerial America has this remembrance: bit.ly/1qnlDtP

I wouldn't say it was unthinkable. There was some warning that St. Helens was going to erupt.

@ Chad Delk, Some? I’d say quite a lot. The eruption wasn’t so much as “unthinkable” as was the type of eruption. No one had ever witnessed or conceived of a lateral eruption up to that point.

I think they should log all of those dead trees out of the lake.. that's probably a good amount of timber they could still be used possibly

That wood's long since rotted and unusable for timber purposes. It's better off slowly decaying into fertile soil.

The lake is a unique wildlife environment and the logs on and in the lake are a vital part of that environment. To remove them would be just as devastating as the eruption was to the original lake.

I hope not. There are far longer and more educational documentaries on KZread about this topic that would be time better spent.

It’s not a bragging point. Less than 30 comments on this video in seven years. It wasn’t exactly a race.
