Mount Doom Book Nook // Lord of the Rings Diorama

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We're back with another book nook! I couldn't think of what scene I wanted to create, but my partner gave me the perfect idea for a Mount Doom, Frodo tossing the ring into the fires of Mordor, setting! Of course, you've got Sam doing his best "DO IT, MR. FRODO" and Gollum just being a creep on the fringes.
Hey, maybe consider subscribing, and ringing that lil' notification icon.
Help support me make tiny, nerdy thing: / northoftheborder
Get loads up in-progress pictures: / northofthebordercraftw...
A few people have asked how I make my frame for the book nooks. I use 6mm MDF since it's flat and sturdy, and takes paint well without showing grain/texture. I cut it down myself (generally in bulk since it's a slow process with handtools, but you can get your local mill or shop to do it for you), so I'm left with 5 distinctly sized pieces:
Top = 180mm x 80mm
Bottom = 180mm x 74mm
Back = 174mm x 68mm
Right side = 174mm x 180mm
Left side = 180mm x 180mm
The left side is longer so that, if I were so inclined, I can glue the rest of the nook together and have the right side swing out like a door. It also makes squaring things up a little easier, since it will only fit together properly if it's square. Finally, I don't worry about any fancy joints, butt joints (hehehe) work fine since it's not going to support any weight. You'll also notice that I label all my parts--they're similar enough that it's easy to get confused (and I get confused easily anyways), so it's a good habit to have, especially when bulk cutting.

    That lava squish technique between the two plates was one of the coolest things I've seen. Amd your tiny greenstuff Danlijah Woodcliffe, Sam, and Gollum are most impressive, especially Gollum's tiny fingies.

    Don't tell anyone, but it happened by accident first (you can see where it had already been done before I used the plate) when I put the walkway in place first, before removing it. Bob Ross would be proud.

    I really just enjoy the funny zen of your videos! Just a tip I learned back in the 80s when I couldn’t afford a mirror with a frosted design that I wanted. CLEAR Con-Tact paper will give a perfect frost to any glass smooth surface so you don’t have to sand (or sandblast) anything. Just spray a light soapy solution on the glass/acrylic, place the Con-Tact and squeegee out the water and air bubbles with something like a credit card. I have it on the side lights of my front door for 15 years now and no one can see through. Just so you know, I am 70 years old and I watch most of what you do… you are so silly and entertaining, and I love your trial and error approach to creating… it’s my approach too and will serve you well! Nerd on!

    This project turned out so well. Coincidentally, I wanted to make this exact scene as a book nook as well. But it never occurred to me to do it from the perspective you did. Facing the outside of mount doom and looking into the volcano. Also the tip with the acrylic pushing the paint down to create a water effect is so clever. Definitely saving that in the memory bank! I only recently discovered your channel but you quickly turned into one of my favorite hobby channels. Thank you for using your time to make these videos.

If you remember from the movie, there was a heavy lava waterfall coming down from the side, making it look really hot and dangerous inside of the mountain. The only thing I would comment on is where you staged a light to accentuate Frodo you could have, well within your artistic license, put some cracks in the bridge, big enough where Samwise was standing so even in the dark you could see him there, or some of him, watching Frodo. When you showed it in the dark that’s where my mind ventured. Thanks again. Definitely got a new sub here.

    Point of order, the mountain's name is Orodruin. It's commonly referred to in language of the people of the west as something along the lines of "Mount Doom", after translation. Prof Tolkien's many notes and letters cover a lot of that sort of nerdy detail.

    You gave me some inspiration for my next project and you did an amazing job! I love your work! Regarding Mount Doom, it's actual name is Orodruin or Amon Amarath. Mount Doom is the translated name in the common speech, (that's what Tolkien indended with some names) meaning the language that you reed the book :)

    Mount Doom is actually just a colloquialism, a nickname given to the volcano by the people of Middle Earth. One of its actual names is Amon Amarth. Nerdy correction out of the way... I love the video! Lol

    Tolkien did give a different name (two actually). Mount Doom, also known as Orodruin and Amon Amarth, was a volcano in Mordor. Mount Doom was located in the Plateau of Gorgoroth in northwestern Mordor. Orodruin is the common Sindarin name and Amon Amarth is the Sindarin translation, Amon meaning (Hill or Mountain) and Amarth meaning (Doom or fate).

    I have properly chastised in the comments by many a Tolkien fan, and I stand corrected absolutely. My disappointment should clearly lie with the people of Middle Earth for choosing such a lazy nickname for the mountain!

    the names in LOTR are actually all (except the rohinians) translated from their 'natural' language to something we will understand. For example 'merry's name means happy/merry in the hobbit language, so toilkin called him 'merry' as that was a close word in english we would take as a name. 'Frodo' means something too but apparently 'bilbo' was just 'bilba' but hobbit names ending in 'a' don't sound masculine to us, so 'Bilbo.' here is the excerpt from the LOTR wiki, I didn't know if 'mt doom' was just a misnomer but I figured if all the characters names were, the mountain probably was as well. ''Orodruin was the common Sindarin name for Mount Doom. It means "Fire Mountain", from orod ("mountain") and ruin ("burning, fiery red"). However, the literal Sindarin translation for Mount Doom is Amon Amarth, from amon ("hill, mountain") and amarth ("doom, fate").[5][6] It is also possible that "Doom" is a mis-anglicization of "Dun", an old-English and possibly Rohirric term for "mountain".''
