    11:08 I have to say something, don’t use depictions past the 12th century for the vlandians. They are highly based off the normans. It makes sense for things like the kettlehelm, but not for the pikemen, as the pikemen are based off of depictions of normans during the battle of Hastings. The Vlandian Crossbowmen are actually based off the Genoese Crossbowmen, which is why they look the way they do, which makes sense as the descendants of the Vlandians (the Rhodoks and Swadians) are based off the French and Germans (thus the name swadian, based off the duchy of Swabia) and the English and Italy (specifically England during the 100 years war and Genoa, where the Genoese Crossbowmen came from).

    That is a fair point as a large majority of the armor seems to make references to that, but as far as I know full mail chausses were not part of the technological capabilities of the Normans at the time. This includes the full enclosed helms as well. Unless there is some information I don't know about that, which could be possible as I'm no expert on the subject. Specifically the further up the upgrade tree you go, the further the actual armor progresses through time. That's why I mentioned that the Vlandian Sargent looks very much like early crusaders which should be quite a bit away from the time of the Normans. I should have really expanded more upon that point before trying to correlate it to sources, so that's my bad. Also I find it interesting how much the Vlandian Crossbowmen have in common with the Genoese crossbowmen, especially since this is another example of a troop tree that breaks the overall Norman theme they are portraying as they are outside the time frame of that of the Normans as well (at least the ones with the much later Pavise Shields). Regardless, I appreciate you sharing and giving feedback!

    @@GoGoDani I feel like the armour is a mix of fantasy and real Norman German and Italian armour, the Balestrieri Genovesi (Genoese crossbowman) were Italian mercenaries which worked pretty much all over Europe, and the Pavese shield is also Italian too, based on the name of city of Pavia. I kinda like the armour they made but also don’t, because some of it seems kind of redundant and quite fantasy inspired, I honestly would have put more variety of great helms and kettle hats, also during the XII and XIII centuries, hauberks were a whole suit that covered the body from head to toe. It kinda looks like larp armour, but it does it’s job

    16:40 Correction: These special units don't just spawn in villages, if your leadership skill is 150, you can recruit bandit units and upgrade them into those special units; at that point, every hillman can be turned into a vlandian banner knight. Also, not all of these speical units are cavalry units, for the Battanians, their special unit is the Fian, which are really good archers. 18:42 You also missed the unit that can be further upgraded from the Vlandian champion, which are the Banner knights. These bad boys are what your cavalry should be, quick, armored, lances couched and badass looking.

    Yes I was wanting to see a video like this about the Vlandian armour since I think the Vlandians would be my favorite faction since they seem closest to the Swadians from Warlord which are my favorite. The helm you were talking about the Vlandian Vanguard wearing looks a lot like this helm under this knight's maile coif in this effigy. effigiesandbrasses.com/776/1296/ Knyght Errant briefly mentions this shape in his video on the Great Helm. Keep up the good work man, your channel is very good and these videos are very interesting. Since I also watch a lot of stuff like this on youtube and look on Manuscript Miniatures all the time I really enjoy these kind of videos from you.

    Gambeson vests were a thing, though they had short sleeves as far as I can see. That being said I don't like the dark brown gambesons Vlandian troops use, not very historical as historical gambesons were either a light natural color or dyed some other color like red, blue, green or whatever. Also, while on gambesons, I think a lot MORE troops should have them, i'd say put a gambeson on the Vlandian footman, gambesons were cheap and very very common, sometimes even legally mandated that every man should have one (Plus a helmet and polearm). The squire should DEFINITELY have a gambeson, probably not maile if for nothing else but gameplay reasons, but a gambeson is definitely called for, it's silly to give a troop a (very nice looking) maile coif but then give them a normal tunic, especially since it's a noble troop. On another nitpicky thing, I hate the pants for vlandia, medieval hose of this period were as loose as they look in game, but they were always colored in the same manner you would color your tunic, so if they have like a yellow tunic they'd have blue hose or whatever, for example. I just dislike the lack of color in vlandian clothing, it's pretty ahistorical to the time and place it's inspired off. Also cause i'm a dweeb who complains a lot, whitewash the inside (and sometimes outside) of stone buildings. I hate going into my keep and having bare grey stone walls, walls were always whitewashed and often had murals painted on, if you could afford it. That being said I appreciate the vlandian tapestries and I think the tapestries in vlandian castles actually look really nice. Maybe some linens for the tables as well

    Ooohh gods that pavise shield is thicker than a larp shield... I feel like that is more problematic than the leather scale armor since there are finds of leather lammelar from the middle east... But most of the weapons and armor are great as you point out very nicely.

    @@GoGoDani Well, there is actually one type of Vlandian Archers, though they are a bit difficult to get. They are only available for the Brotherhood of the Woods which is a Vlandian mercenary subfaction and have tree-based names. You can really only get them by recruiting prisoners from that subfaction. The highest tier is the Aboreal who has recently been nerfed a bit to no longer be on par with the Battanian Fian Archers. I think limiting the Vlandians on Bowmen was a very deliberate decision. For one, because every other culture has archers anyways and they wanted some degree of uniqueness whereas Crossbows are only available to Vlandia and the Empire. Then there's the matter of Battania. Battania as a faction is based on british, gaelic and/or celtic tribes and happens to have the best Longbowmen in the game in exchange for lacking effective cavalry and not having particularily good armour for their troops. It's also right next to Vlandia. With Vlandia being more of a french/german/norman cliché I believe they were envisioning 100 years war like conflicts with the Battanian Longbowmen facing off against the heavy Vlandian Cavalry and their heavy crossbowmen. I think it is due to this perceived rivalry that they wanted those two factions to have a particularily asymmetric roster when compared to each other.

    Great work, as always. I noticed that the pavise the crossbowman uses appears to have a shield boss. Does that make sense for this type of shield? I'm curious since I am not aware of any historical examples that share this design.

  • @GoGoDani

    @GoGoDani

    I'm afraid I don't exactly know which part you are talking about. Is it the bulbous thing that's on the face of the shield? If so, that's a shield boss and actually I don't believe that those are supposed to be on Pavise shields. I definitely should have mention something in the video, but I was just so stunned to see such a rare shield type in a video game anyways lol.

    @@GoGoDani Guess I didn't edit my comment fast enough to hide the fact that I wrote "buckle" instead of "boss", huh? Yes, that is what I was wondering about. It just seems like a really weird idea to me to put something designed to deflect melee blows on a stationary anti-projetile shield. Bothers me more than it probably should.

  • @GoGoDani

    @GoGoDani

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@LautrecOfCarim Lol yeah I think the reason I wasn't thinking of it was the fact that I was still in "kite shield mode", and some early kite shields tended to have basically a vestigial shield boss that didn't fulfill the same purpose as it would on a center grip shield. I suppose you could chalk it up to either added protection or an aesthetic choice. Either way, it started to phase out when heater shields started to show up and soon kite shields either started to resemble heater shields more and more, or they were just outright replaced. So for the crossbowmen's shields, they very well could just have them just to have them as far as I know.
