MOTU M2 Review, Test, and Comparison!

Музыка

Hey everyone! So I just got my MOTU M2 audio interface and made this first impressions video for you. I wanted to try something different so I decide to not only review the unit but test and compare it with a more expensive device that uses the identical digital audio converters found in the M2. In this video I not only unbox the MOTU M2, but do a side by side audio comparison with my MOTU 828es (another very cool piece of hardware). Then I record some acoustic guitar using the M2 and a Lauten Audio LA120 microphone. Thanks for watching!

I just bought the M4, changing from the presonus. The ESS32 Sabre DAC is the same that I have in my high end home stereo system DAC, costing well over $1800. This is an excellent chip and you can hear how good it is as soon as you turn it on. Also the headphone plug being on the front is nice, AND the headphone amp on the MOTU is freaking awesome.

I have the MOTU 828es and the MOTU MIDI Express XT and both are phenomenal. They do everything I could ever need, the software and controls work seamlessly, they look great, the displays are beautiful, the knobs and housing feel great, and most importantly the sound is spectacularly detailed and clear. MOTU has been doing this a long time and they know what they're doing. Their pre-amps and DACs are some of the best in the business. And they're an American company. You'd be crazy not to look closely at them for any of their products.

I listened to it with good quality headphones and I couldn't really tell the difference in your sound comparison test. This video is convincing me more to get this as my first audio interface although I would get the M4 for the extra inputs. Keep up the good work, looking forward to your up coming videos👍.

@@kyron42 I use mostly physical instruments in the room with microphones, but I mix in some virtual instruments as well. I usually record electric guitar through an amplifier, acoustic guitar, acoustic drums, bass guitar (sometimes direct, sometimes through an amp), vocals, random hand percussion, and some virtual instruments like drums, synths, pianos. I did a video on the M4 that involved most of these elements, although the main use for my M4 in the future will be to record voice through a lavalier mic and line outputs of other audio interfaces for video reviews/demos.

@@YHRS the M2 and M4 have very impressive specs. For some reason they're keeping the ADC chip secret. Sooner or later someone will open up the box and spill the Beans. There seems to be very little difference between cheap audio interfaces and expensive ones. The main difference I have with different tests on KZread is that the expensive interfaces tend to be slightly more punchy and slightly more slam but that may have been just the way it was recorded. Two things that made two could have done better is have a separate power supply instead of having to rely on the interface for it's power. May not give the best results connected to a PC with RFI and EMI noise. It's probably best to use with an apple. It would have been good if stay calibrated the meters.

The insulation and sound inside is pretty dead and flat with no reverb. I selected this interface for my new side hustle; VO production. My entire kit consists of: Macbook Pro w/ Adobe Audition for my DAW. Headphones are DT990 pro 250 ohm; (yes, they are open backed). Moano PM500 XLR condenser mic. The MOTU M2 works great and is the pivotal component in the whole equation. I researched for months and with the help of KZread, I can now geek out with the best of them. Thanks Carlo

Thanks for your review! Question please. Would you say the Motu M2 (or M4) has a more powerful preamp compared to say the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (or 4i4) mixer, assuming you have experience with the Scarlett mixers? In other words, how high can you set the gain dial on the Motu mixer before you start hearing that unwanted hissing/humming background sound (when used with say a Shure SM58 XLR mic)? Can you go to total maximum gain or maybe close to it before the unwanted background electronic noise appears?

  • @CarloLibertini

Hi Casey!.. Unfortunately I haven't tried the Scarlett's yet. Somehow the engineers and designers at MOTU have done a very impressive job in getting the absolute most out of such a small and portable device. If I crank up my M2 preamp to max, any "noise" could be coming from a range of possible things. By it's self with no mic or cable it is quiet. If one is using an older or inexpensive cable, that may introduce noise as well as a the microphone we use. Typically, all my recordings through my M2 are impressive. But keep in mind I try to use very reliable gear in ever link of the chain... Thanks!

I have picked one of these as an upgrade from my old Line 6 Tone port. I did a ton of research and chose this over the Focusrite 2i2. Not that the focus rite is a bad unit, it is great. However, the Motu 2M has midi inputs which you don't get on the Focusrite 2i2. This is a very nice unit. I record myself and my guitar and this does a marvelous job. the level bars and the fact you can turn phantom power on independently for each input is great as I generally record voice and guitar at the same time using a condenser and dynamic mic. I also use it for practice. I figure if I sound ok the myself, I'm ok; It is a confidence booster. Also use it, with my DAW as a looper. Motu has really done it's homework on this unit and have upped the game in this sub $200 market.

First of all, thank you for the video. Great job. Just a quick comment. I think the 828Se sounds a tad better meaning a little less harsh and more smooth. I think it has a warmer smoother sound overall. You can hear it in the symbols the chime, and softness overall. The 828Se is probably a little brighter unit and the Bass is a little least prominent and warmer didn't punch out as much. With all that said, were splitting hairs here not to mention the huge difference in cost. I do wonder how much of the slight difference is due to the fact that the 828 is powered and the M2 is USB. As someone else also commented below I do believe the M2 is a USB 2 Unit only not USB C. Not positive about this but 98% sure it's only able to handle USB 2 not USB C speed which is around 10 Gigs.

Tom! Thanks for the reply... I chose this particular track because of to unique frequencies regarding the highs and lows. The M2 is a USB-C device for certain. Not USB 2. The included cable is a USB-C to a USB standard connection (typical rectangular type that fits most computers still). Perhaps that's where another commentator may of made that mistake. If you have a USB-C to USB-C then for sure you will be utilizing the high speed bus to it's fullest potential. You bring up a good point... Voltage is everything. Obviously the 828es has a more robust power source (the wall) and pre-amps do require optimum energy for a transducer to give you the best possible quality. But, the M2 is thoughtfully engineered to provide a similar standard via USB-C ( with some engineering wizardry ) to match that reliability. It is a remarkable piece of engineering... not to mention the bundles software makes this an unbelievable deal-

I looked up USB C speeds and not all usb speeds are the same, they are supposed to be as high as usb 3.1 but some USB-C connections are USB 2.0, some are 3.1, and some are thunderbolt. And in this case the MOTU M2 is rated at USB 2.0 on Motu's website under technical specs.

  • @TomCourtneyMusic

@@bharatvector652 Carlo/Brat thanks again. The MOTU M2 and M4 are USB 2.0 defined devices regardless of the USB C connector which has been confusing for a lot of people including myself. Even if you connect the M2/M4 to USB C and another USB C on the other end the Unit itself is rated for USB 2.0 so you don't really get the benefit of the Higher USB C connector. You are stuck with USB 2.0 regardless. This is just MOTO thinking forward and putting the USB C connector on their devices going forward. It's still an amazing convenient unit for the money. I think the slight difference we hear in the audio examples played in Carlos Video might be the fact that this is USB driven and the bigger more expensive Motu ES had power.

Olá António. Também sou portugues mas vou falar em Ingles para todos entenderem. You said you use Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 250 ohm headphones. Perhaps the Motu M2 does not have the power for 250 ohm impedance. Audio interfaces from other competing brands only achieve up to 200 ohm impedance and your headphones are 250 ohms. The more ohm impedance the more power is needed. So you may need to buy a Headphone amplifier or exchange your Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 250 ohm for 80 ohm.

First, as far audio quality, both will not fail you. The quality of your tracks will then depend on your microphones and technique. The M2 and M4 however do included an incredible value in bundled software. Whether or not someone is new or seasoned in audio production there is a lot of extra goodies included for your investment with the MOTU units. I love the quality and build of my M2 and the commitment Mark of the Unicorn provides its users. There isn't a time when I couldn't just pick up the phone and talk to someone there if I needed too... Hey Carlo, Its Timmy DAgs, (Shelby's guitarist from Era For a Moment) so I've had the Scarlett 2i2 for a couple years now. and this unit interests me but do you knwo if it has the same problem the scarlett has with the whole 1/4" guitar DI clipping? basically the 2i2 hasa selector for each channel where you can go instrument level or line level... but the instrument level clips like crazy, so you have to run it at super low volumes to have it not constantly clipping, (even with passive electronics) vs switching it to line level and having to drive the gain super high just to feed amp modelers in your daw/standalone to get any sound quality from them. in this vid you mic'd an acoustic, but have you gone direct with any electrics since this? curious the outcome. ✌🏼

The main thing people don't understand about smaller, more affordable preamps with professional quality is that: the reason it can still be that small and high quality and not me a gimmick or too hard to believe is because: studio preamps are mainly expensive for 2 main reasons: 1.) Yes, part of that is quality, which has its own piece of the price, but 2.) No one buys 1 or 2 channel preamps for their commercial level studios, usually these units have several channels and other features, they are literally spending 100s or 1000s on quality per channel/input and maybe some knobs and features they cut out of the home versions. The fact these things have been downsized for the home studios doesn't take away from the same level of quality they would have in a studio. Of course, they must be in your capable hands to sound good, but that goes equally for industry versions of the same equipment.

After you've set the gain levels, and you're recording vocals over a track, you may want to bring the vocals up in your monitor. You won't be able to without also bringing up the track volume. That knob fades between only input and only the track. I am in complete agreement with Kevin de Groot. I've been wondering if there's a way to mod the M2. @@CarloLibertini Thanks for replying. Nice review. You're enjoyable to listen to.. The reason i asked those questions is, you seemed to really like the M2. So when I watch favorably reviews, I always try to gauge whether there is possibly some implicit bias so I can take that into account. The bias could potentially be there from a sponsorship, or gifting of the product, or past history using the brand. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having sponsors who provide products to use or to keep. Nothing wrong with having bias; but I think full disclosure is vital for honest evaluation by others. Some companies expect some level of favor in return for the gift. Or it could be natural for people like you who are fair to others, to unintentionally add a little "flavor of favor" out of appreciation. IMO, the question of WHERE the product came from for the review, and one's history with the manufacturer, and its products, should always be addressed up front as a best practice. You seem like a person of integrity; but the way you worded your response, I'm still not clear whether MOTU gifted you or loaned it to you.

This is just a guess, but judging by the (tiny) difference in the frequency response, with the 828se sounding a bit brighter, but weaker in the bass and low mids, and the M2 having more weight, but slightly less brilliance, I'd say it's possible that the two mics weren't perfectly symmetrically placed in relation to the speaker cap - namely the M2 mic might have been placed a tad more towards the cone. And looking at the picture, the left mic seems to be a very little further from the cap axis. Factoring that possibility out, I'd say the two sound pretty much identical. Even if that's only self-suggestion, a little all around boost (since the difference in brilliance seems to be in the same region for the kick, snare, hi-hats, guitar, and vocals) at around probably 4-5 K would very easily solve the difference in brilliance. As such, I like the low end on the M2 and the top of the 828se, in this recording. They both sound excellent.

I use this same Pc with others Audio interfaces without problem (even at 16 or 32 buffer size and 48000hz sample rate) but with the M4 , sometimes, I have problem even at 128 sample rate at 48000hz, I tried the M4 with my other desktop/gaming pc (intel i7 8700k, 2080ti, 16gb Ram, ssd and windows 10 pro) with almost the same issue (pop at 128/48000hz, and almost unusuable under 128), I tried the M4 also on my new laptop Dell xps 13 2 in 1 with Intel i7 1065G7 16 gb ram and ssd, thuderbolt 3 ports(wich is works great with the cheaper but good Focusrite scalret 3d gen 2i2) and here I have a lot of problems, there are a lot of pop and casual freeze at any Latency/sample rate, even at 44100hz and 512buffer size...I guess is a usb/driver for windows problem that I hope the Motu team can fix it but i don't have any problem with the same pc with others AI anyway this is my experience and I know that I'm not the only one

Thanks for making this! Question: I've hooked up my Roland RD-800 keyboard through a MOTU M4 interface into GarageBand, and I'm using one of the bass sounds from my Roland, recording in Mono through the M4's Input 3. I can only faintly hear the bass sound in GarageBand; I have to turn the volume all the way up on my keyboard and all the way up on my bass track in the program to hear it at a halfway decent level. Then of course I have nowhere to go from there. I'm having this issue in MOTU's Performer LITE software, too. Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong here?

  • @j.du6

    @j.du6

    3 жыл бұрын

Turn up the preamp gain until you see the meters at more than 50% and make sure you don't have phantom power on. Maybe the output from the Roland needs to be louder. Test the audio out, but also experiment with the headphone out into the interface as that may give you a louder signal that will need less preamp gain. Look at the waveform in Garageband it should look like in this vid and again the meters on the Motu should show the signal strength. If it is then it must be a gain or monitoring setting in Garageband. Test out a dynamic vocal mic too.

@@destinyathens ...you're right, it's not straightforward, though I'm so used to my MOUT Ultralite MkIII that I didn't realise my method won't work for the M2 (but should for the M4). I use the MOTU audio setup to put the headphones on ch7+8, then in my software I direct a copy of my main mix to 7+8 (the headphones) - which I can then mute. This also means that with a 4-channel mix I can reduce the rear output of 1+2+3+4, in the mix-down to 7+8, so the headphones render a more room-like rendering of the quad. With the M4 you should be able to direct 1+2 to 3+4, and with the headphones set to 3+4 you could then mute them. Though I'm not familiar with the new routing driver of MOTU's. I tried two of their new units in my studio and could not get along with the ESS adc/dac's they are now using. The previous AKM chips were great - and is why premium brands such as RME still use them. The ESS chips were a cost-cutting measure for MOTU, they hyped the chips and people have believed the hype - but they don't sound good. I've now ended with new MOTU products - due to the ESS chips. Anyway some like the flat electronic sound of the ESS chips, so getting an M4 and placing the headphones on 3+4 should work - to mute.
