MotorWeek | Road Test: 2016 Cadillac CT6

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Like many recent GMs, Cadillac's CT6 sedan seemed to be a long time coming. But that’s okay...if you’re launching an all-new flagship sedan to go after the world’s best, taking whatever time is necessary to get it right is prudent and smart. So, let’s take a look at Cadillac’s new take on global luxury; and see if they did indeed got the job done.
The 2016 Cadillac CT6 is indeed an all-new flagship sedan that doesn’t replace anything currently in the lineup, but rather looks to extend the range while raising the profile of the entire Cadillac brand.
Slightly longer than an XTS, both the CT6’s overall length and 122.4-inch wheelbase are just shy of benchmark large luxury liners Mercedes-Benz S-class and BMW 7-series; but it’s much bigger than four-doors like the Acura RLX that straddle the midsize/fullsize line.
This car is clearly full-size and it is also beautiful; sleek and sophisticated, far more gorgeous going down the street than it ever looked on an auto show stand.
Yet it still appears very American, and there are plenty of traditional Caddy cues. Proportions are just right.
Standard 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder power might be a stretch for a large global sedan, but its 265-horsepower is certainly adequate. And most Cadillac owners never know what’s under the hood anyway.
A 335-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 is the next step up, but the hot ticket for now, is our test car’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6. Horsepower here is 404, accompanied by 400 lb-ft. of torque. We imagine a V8 will appear sometime in the future.
8-speed automatic transmissions for all.
More significant is the return of a rear-wheel-drive architecture. Of course, all-wheel-drive is available as well.
And consider our minds blown when we checked the rearview mirror only to see it’s actually a wide video display from the rear mounted camera. It takes a little getting used to as you lose your normal frame of reference, but you can always switch back to a normal mirror.
Applying lessons learned with the ATS, lots of aluminum is involved in keeping weight down, more mid-size than full at just over 4,000-lbs. with the turbo-6; and you certainly feel it.
Highway ride is quite plush, yet nowhere near bloated; and it doesn’t go to pieces when pushed hard through corners.
It’s actually impressively solid, stays almost flat thanks to magnetic ride control, and has a joyous bit of oversteer at the limit.
Steering is very direct with a performance sedan feel and excellent feedback.
Things actually do get sporty in sport mode, and the car seems to shrink as you push harder; yet it remains incredibly smooth.
Off the line it certainly feels like 400-horsepower, with a quick leap to 60 in 5.4-seconds. With all-wheel-drive, there was gobs of traction and plenty of bold power laid down.
The engine revs quickly, and automatic shifts come on just as fast; but the car remains super stable at speed, hitting 105 at the end of the ¼, after 13.7-seconds.
The interior is a huge step up for the brand, nicer than the XTS, and even more inviting than the XT5 crossover that we’ve also recently spent a lot of time in. Most materials like wood and chrome are excellent. The leather-work, not so much. And, there are still a lot of different materials and surfaces going on in here.
Most of us aren’t fans of having strictly touch controls, though things have come a long way since the original CUE interface; we could live with this setup.
CT6 front seat comfort is truly spectacular; and, with almost a foot more wheelbase than the XTS, rear seat room very plentiful, as is trunk space.
Every safety system you could expect is available including night vision and automatic braking, which waits until the absolute last possible second before aggressively taking over and bringing you to a safe stop.
Government Fuel Economy Ratings are 18-City, 26-Highway, and 21-Combined. We averaged a good 22.8 miles-per-gallon of Premium.
For an average Energy Impact Score of 15.7-barrels of oil consumed and 7.0- tons of CO2 emitted yearly,
Style and sophistication come with hefty price tags, but Cadillac does seem to have a CT6 for everyone from a base CT6 at $54,490 to Platinum trim with twin-turbo V6 at $88,460
So does the 2016 Cadillac CT6 really have what it takes to compete with the world’s best luxury sedans? Well, it’s close with only a few details that need addressing. Still we think the CT6 easily exceeds its traditional buyers’ expectations, while giving new converts won over with the CTS and ATS a car to aspire to. It is a bold move up in style, stance, and interior features; and worthy of its flagship banner. It’s also clearly the best ever from Cadillac, and an effort we gladly praise.

I tested a CT6 Premium 3.0T and came away thoroughly impressed with the car. In keeping with what Cadillac did with the 2nd and especially 3rd-gen CTS: This ain't grandpaw's Caddy! Full-disclosure: The wife owns a '15 MB S550 4Matic. Very, very fine automobile. The interior really does question the need for a Bentley. However, in terms of ride/handling balance, the CT6 is all over the S-Class.(the horror!) The well-damped, micro-second reacting MRC suspension is simply better than the sometimes ungainly, nautical feel of the S550, even in it's sportiest setting. The CT6 does it effortlessly, whereas the over-electrolized S550 doesn't have that organic feel. It is the structure that is the Omega that feels tighter when wafting down the road over the W222 Benz. Now, will Cadillac peel off Mercedes customers? Just a handful, likely. But those whom are like my wife(hey, a guy hit a homerun by marrying a gal that loves cars!), they will give it a once over. The CT6's interior entrapments won't cause a designo-equipped S550 any problems, but the CT6 seemed to not have to leave the interior in despair to sell at a lower price. I actually like the smoother seating of the Premium that the Platinum. And it seems Cadillac is "damned if it does, damned if it doesn't" as it pertains to interior materials. Not everybody is a fan of the cold(brand new 7 Series for instance- It just does not have an interior that befits a $100k car, or are we just spoiled by thr Benz?), austere appearance of German cars(sans S550), so stop it with the "too many textures and materials). It is ALL 100% geniune material except where plastics should be. Even the lower parts of the doors are leather wrapped. It is a fine car that deserves a look if shopping in this class. We will be replacing my trusty but a little dated 2013 300C AWD with one come January.

What makes the S-Class the standard of the segment is the no-compromise, lavished interior design and finish! Despite being significantly cheaper than luxury cars from Bentley and Rolls Royce, the S-Class still manages to draw comparisons with them! Which speaks to Mercedes' commitment and focus on providing the best luxury experience! Unfortunately, the same can't yet be said for Cadillac! While their lineup has improved dramatically, the brand still lags behind the tier-1 luxury brands! There are woefully obvious signs of cost-cutting and cheapening of materials prevalent in the CT6, which is why GM priced it from $54K: which is rather affordable but is no more competitive than the new Lincoln Continental.

Something like that would save Cadillac from becoming extinct... Have a car that is nothing but comfort. Forget sport mode this, and traction control that. Make a car that is intended for highways, reliability, and comfort as the focus of the car, instead of trying to make it a 'comfort 2nd sports car first' type of feel. It's a shame because automakers are really the ones to blame because of the criticism Cadillacs would get for having cars that weren't sporty...

Like you said, John. Great effort Caddy, but not quite there with the A8L, 7 series, or S class. And the XTS surprisingly has about 2.7 cubic ft more trunk space, which is close to the trunk space of the german flagship sedans

Fun to own and drive, but I feel sorry for the people who have to diagnose and repair cars like this. A major system failure out of warranty can make these cars disposable once problems start to creep up.

Nice to see a proper full-size, rear-wheel drive luxury sedan from Cadillac again. Truthfully, I have been growing tired of the automobile industry's recent obsession with "luxury-performance" vehicles like the CTS. Not that they're necessarily bad cars, but is every premium car nowadays required to possess sports car-level speed and handling characteristics in order to be taken seriously? I never saw the need. Luxury cars are built for comfort and class, and the CT6 actually looks like a pleasant, elegant cruiser instead of an aggressive, quasi-macho sport sedan. Hope it does well on the market.

When you open the glove box shouldn't it smoothly open in a well dampened motion? Mine just slams open and bounces at the end of it's fall.

not quite. But this car did just match the 7 series in sales last month. That is very good for Cadillac. I'd guess that the next generation cadillacs will be the time when Cadillac is back for real

A turbo 4 in your full-size luxury flagship? a 400HP TT V6 as your top offering? Sub-par leather? Just goes to show that GM isn't ready to play with the big boys yet because they haven't dropped the habit of building to a price point rather than building the best car they can. Hopefully better interior materials and the rumored 4.2 TT V8 will end up in here eventually.

I know but when u think caddy u think EP and if I like it he would've loved it and I like to bring that back with the hood emblems to loved them in massive chrome and on the steering colum that cool with chrome and on the seats and the styles that when u seat in it ur like Dame I made it and it makes u a star just for owning it and the hidden spare is great and some of my drawing has a big coupe with a pull out seat in rear out side the ride and to think many people rode this way and in Jeep's and in trucks but Ford now can't pass a breathable air on the inside

All the it was missing was a S/C 3800V6 engine, the car couldn't use a V8 engine that would have carried a 6 $$$$figure price, what was Cadillac thinking, it's a confusing combination of S class meets Fleetwood brougham,76 Fleetwood brougham at that.
