They were great little cars, very zippy, very tossable The only downsides; A- the tendency to blow head gaskets B; abysmal crash test performance, utterly terrifying... that said, the car was nimble enough to allow you to avoid many potential crashes C; they rusted out like crazy here in Northern New England, my ‘02 base had the front suspension “K-Member” rust nearly in half in 4 years.... I owned a ‘98 Highline in flame red, and a ‘02 base in Patriot Blue

Yes I liked a lot of Chrysler stuff from the 90s too as well as this Neon R/T. If you or a good (and I mean good) mechanic in your area service it properly as all cars should be, it’ll keep going.

The 2.4L was a Chrysler minivan engine specifically designed for thr minivans initially to its overbuilt nature. Later PT cruiser and SRT-4 originally. Developed in 90’s restyle of the caravans to replace the 2.5 liter trans four engine series in base budget friendly models. 2.4 or 2.0 were based on similar measurements also based off of similar internal spacings of the 2.2 and 2.5 liter engines essentially. Originally the 2.2 was was to be a 2.0 liter engine under the K-cars development but got a displacement increase figuring that wouldn’t be enough as it wasn’t during the carbureted era of the engines.

Seeing this car as a kid, and the Viper being my favorite car, I used to think it was the coolest thing ever!!! The stripes, interior, R/T badge, spoiler, etc etc Jeez.....how times have changed!!! I've owned a '98 R/T coupe for the last 5 1/2 yrs, and it's been very good to me. It has 378,000 km's on the clock, Mopar Performance ECU, and I swapped in some Koni adjustable struts. It's a blast to drive - especially on the many twisty highways we have here. The problem with these cars was neglect - Chrysler cheaped out on the gaskets for the first three years, and people who bought neons drove them into the ground. They're really not bad cars.

I just bought a ‘98 R/T yesterday from a college kid that didn’t know what he was giving away. It’s white with the blue racers like in the video. It’s totally stock, what else beyond the gaskets, seals, and engine mounts should I replace to get it back to its former glory?

Flush the brakes, and power steering. For a couple a bucks you should get a MAF sensor cleaner. Depending on the miles of your R/T it's also a good idea to change all pulley's and tensioners, and belt. Lasty fill her up with some SeaFoam from AutoZone and 91 octane gas, or the highest available in your state just for that 1 fill up.

Hey, my first car! '98 Neon R/T 5sp coupe, blue with silver stripes. I bought it from a family friend who was offered $4500 as a trade-in in 2002 w/ 33k mi. He was so mad about the trade-in he sold it to me when I was 15 for the $4500. I beat the hell out of that thing in high school. I burned off a set of tires in 6,000mi. The spedo went to 120... trust me you could bury it, I think it was governed at 125. It blew a head gasket sometime in there, I think many did. No ABS or TC... not entirely sure how I survived high school being as insane as I was, but I did. I dumped it after high school for an old BMW. Another bad decision. Still, the memories in that crappy Neon are pretty fond.

Point of contention: The R/T did not get the same shocks as the ACR, it got the same shocks as the Sport Coupe. The ACR used adjustable ARVIN shock for the first models, and then Koni adjustables on later models. Source: Myself, I own a '99 R/T sedan just like the one in the test. :)

I had a '96 Dodge Neon ACR twincam coup. No A/C, no radio, roll-down windows, manual locks and mirrors. Basic! Raced the tires off of it on the weekend, drove it daily, like a lot of people did with them. Fun, engaging, dynamic, easy to drive, with excellent braking and very high apex speeds. Relatively light at 2300lbs (though heavy compared with a Formula Ford or my Lotus Elan and Europa race car; the latter weighing only 1300lbs). Excellent chassis performance, especially when dialed into track geometry settings and sticky tires; oh, and the factory rebound adjustable Koni dampers cranked to full hard in the front. Wonderful transitional speed. Not a refined engine, but great, free revving dynamics all the way to the 7500 rpm redline (and a bit beyond that with the high performance PCM). Reliable, easy and inexpensive to service. Dodge had a lot of support for the racing programs for this car. Cost all of $10,900 brand new. Overall, the best car I've ever owned.

Well I have owned 2 neons, a highline, and a a Sport, both 1999 models. The highline had the single cam motor and started falling apart around 120,000 the Sport I bought with a rebuilt engine, only mod was I had someone tweak the computer, and also a cold air intake. It has same doulble cam motor with 4v per cyclinder, but mine has a very low geared 5 speed. I runs about 3,000rpm at 75, at 55 about 2400. So it wont top out fast, but I promise you I can smoke just about any stock civic, and pretty much any 2.o or smaller non-turbo motor. It revs smoothly all the way to 7500rpm and will hit 35 in 1st, 74 in 2nd, 96 in 3rd, and I have hit 128mph in 4th and in 5th at 136 it shuts down, at about 7250rpm. Whatever you want to say about it, it hauls, and stomps other similar cars ass, seriously. I barely got beat by a modified Subaru that was pushing 325 horse[power, and from a 30mph roll, can stay with most regular v-8s right up to 105mph, then they lose me.

They were very prone to rusting out, if you lived in the “rust belt”, or anywhere where they salt the roads in the winter, you’d be lucky to get 4-6 years before you started getting rust perforation and/or compromised suspension components like the K-Member front suspension mount...

I’m only speaking for myself, but if they were all like my ‘95, they can rot in hell. Which is a shame because mine was fun to drive, if it _could_ drive. No rust on it in 2002, but a blown head gasket at 97k.

I worked at a Chrysler dealership when the 1st gen Neons were brand new. Like most everyone else, we (people in the service dept) liked to talk trash about the Neon. One day, we were discussing Neons and tried to figure out exactly what we all hated about the Neons. As it turned out - besides some early teething problems (head gaskets), no power windows on rear doors, and an outdated 3spd automatic...none of us really came up with good reasons for all the hate, other than it was Chrysler's least expensive car at the time. And compared to other cars at the time, we felt Neons were at least on par or better than the competition, particularly the domestic competition at the time. They drove/handled reasonably well, especially with the manual transmissions and larger optional tires/wheels. And from what I remember - I think they also had the most powerful engines of the competition. Around where I live now, the only compact cars of this era still being used as daily drivers are Neons and Civics.

I owned two, a ‘98 first gen, and an ‘02 second gen, both were extremely fun cars, my first gen had a few minor tweaks, a DOHC muffler, k&n air filter, better plug wires and plugs, and the instrument cluster from a tach model (first gen was a Highline entry level SOHC with no tach), it wasn’t the fastest, but it was nimble! The second gen was bigger, heavier, and slightly less fun, but still fun Both were 5 speed manual, automatics suck. Looking at the crash tests now, I thank The Flying Spaghetti Monster I never got in a crash, the word “tinfoil” springs to mind.... Amazingly fun, but death traps, thankfully their nimble handling made it easy to avoid accidents, the second gen saved me from a collision with a deer crossing the road at the same time some masshole road ranger in an Audi tried to run me off the road (deadly serious, it actually happened)

  • @MacTechG4

Here’s what happened... masshole was tailgating me on Rte 100 by the Mad River in Vermont, it was dusk, (2 lane back road) he goes to pass on the left, and at the very second he was parallel to me, a deer runs across the road! We both slam the brakes and avoid the deer... Masshole then immediately guns it, cuts in front of me, and slams on his brakes! Bastard tried to brake check me! Had I hit the brakes, I would have rear ended him, it was that close! My instinct kicked in, I swerved around him to the left, gunned it a bit until I was clear, then dropped back to the speed limit, he went to pass again at full throttle, I let him pass, flipped him off, and reported him to the state police and let him go Had it not been for the Neons handling, it would have been really bad... It was a good thing I was not concealed carrying that day (Vermont has Permitless Constitutional Carry ) as I’m sure masshole wouldn’t have wanted to end up looking down the muzzle of my .357 Magnum....

Once I trash canned the stock 14's for 50 series 15's, the thing stuck like glue, and the brakes, 4 wheel discs were excellent. ( no abs on mine ) At 70 with the cruise on it got 38 mpg all day. I will say it did eat 2 headgaskets, which was later solved by a multilayer Felpro gasket and their head bolts. Other than that, a very good car that I ran hard for 210K.

We are actually a Ford family but for some reason this last decade that has shifted. Likely due to rebates and dealer location.
