I could NEVER EVER get this first Mercedes M-Class (V6 or V8) out of my head. It might’ve had its shortcomings in terms of build quality, but it sure impressed a lot of people.

I had a ‘99 ML320 for about a year. Had about 180k miles on it. That thing was extremely reliable after getting a few minor issues fixed, and it was an absolute beast in the snow.

@@GermanCarGuyMN that just goes to show you that not all first 2 year models of vehicles are bad. Ya just gotta maintain it properly (which most people don’t unfortunately) and you’re as good as gold.

@@Brian_Eugene_LeeI also have a ‘00 ml320 (my aunt bought it new and I’ve had it for about a year) - it’s pushing 190k miles and has been great! - it had a pulley that needed replaced and a sensor went bad, but labor and parts are cheap - not the fastest, but great torque so surprisingly good cruising/overpassing on the highway even 24 years later 😂

Quality on these tank improved a lot in 2000 from the interior to the exterior with all electric things. It became a very reliable and luxurious vehicle with a lot of capabilities 2 years after 1998.

I had a 1999 ML320 for about a year. It had about 180,000 miles and it was damn reliable. Only thing I had to do to it was put a fuel pump and filter, and a crankshaft position sensor which is a common issue on those. Only put about $300 in repairs into it, and it was a beast in the snow. Everything worked perfectly on. I wish I still had that car, but it was totaled in a hail storm.

2:50 John: Cup holders are cleverly hidden in the dash ends, but are too shallow for more than a soda can. LOL

I laughed at that too. It was the opposite problem with the second generation ML’s cup holders. Too damn big!

These vehicles caught sooooo much hell about reliability, but I saw so many of them reach 300k miles and beyond. The interior door panels of the 1998 and 1999 were terribly made, but could be fixed with patience and the right adhesives, and otherwise these weren’t the *worst* in the end.
