Altengrad is a time-progression Cities: Skylines series where I build a Central European city, located until 1989 in the Eastern Bloc, taking inspiration from Germany, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary. The series starts around the year 1920 and slowly advances forward in time, which means the city will naturally evolve all the way to modern times. The city is not a recreation of any one real-life city or country, but it takes inspiration from them.
PC specs are in the channel's About page. No, the game doesn't run like this in real time. Cinematics are recorded slow and made faster in editing.

This actually hit another memory for me, in Riga, Latvia, in 1966 "Biķernieku trase", a racing circuit was built (right next to a large housing estate). It hasn't changed considerably since then, and as a kid I remember hearing the sounds of the engines on race days, as my grandparents lived right next to it. I didn't know that it actually hosted 7 times a stage of the single-seater series "Cup of Peace and Friendship". Interestingly, Melkus himself raced there in 1968 and took 1st place. In the past decade it has hosted 7 stages of the FIA World Rallycross championship, which is probably the most prestigious event ever held there. Of course, there is still a lot of amateur racing events held there, and in the winter it is open to public for cross-country skiing.

You should definitely add more sitting areas for visitors around the track in the future. The tribune opposite to the hairpin whoud have about 40% of the track visible, that's rare to have such a good viewing place on a track. The Altengradring is astonishing, i would love to race this one in some racing sim.

This city needs a big stadium/sports complex. Most cities in the eastern block held big parades and festivals in them. There's an asset on the workshop based on Berlin's Jahn sportpark that would fit very nicely in this city. For a closed sports venue you could take inspiration from the Spodek in Katowice

As a racing and tracks enthusiast and having read the actual FiA rules for tracks and track safety -and enthusiast of realism in general- i can say you did an exceptional job! i can't say how accurate to the 80s this version of the track is (really does look more late 90s, early 2000s), but that's fine! Means you won't have to update it for the next couple decades!

As a WRC and WEC enthusiast this is just amazing. I've seen a bunch of people try building race tracks in C:S, but none did it so accurately realistic. The only 2 things I noticed is the absence of sausage curbs, which are used in hairpins and chicanes to prevent short cutting. And the other thing is that usually at race circuits you'll see an ambulance car every few corners. Other than that, well done!🎉

  • @_SpamMe

Sausage kerbs are far too modern (and already being removed again). In those days, there might still be just some tires or even hayballs being used for those sorta temporary soft barriers. Even normal kerbs were relatively sparingly used, but then were often quite steep (not like the modern flatter and wider ones). In general I think the track is a bit too modern. Too much and too large run off areas that I also think aren't quite correctly placed (they need to follow more the trajectory of the cars going around the corner and how fast they'd be at the stage of going off and where they'd be going). It looks more like a 1990s track to me than anything earlier.

F1 in communist Hungary sounds like one of those things that was done as an experiment, which was then dropped after a few years. F1 has visited tons of tracks for only one or two years. But weirdly, Hungary just... stayed on the calendar, until today, and now there's no sign of it being dropped any time soon. And it's a nice track, maybe a bit narrow for modern F1 cars, but the racing is still mostly good.

Polonez 2500 aka "Stratopolonez" have rather different story than any other rally eastern car. Andrzej Jaroszewicz, son of politician, rally driver and director of FSO R&D center, was driving Lancia Stratos in Rally of Poland where he crashed the car. Engine, gearbox and rear chassis survived, transported to FSO and mounted in modified and strengthened Polonez body. Missing parts like cooling systems were replaced with, surprise surprise, parts from STAR truck. Also making racing cars driving on bus lines was really clever. I really didn't even think it would be functional!

Just a tiny nit pick - on the final corner on the exit towards the straight, drivers would use the full length of the track, width-wise, to maximise the speed coming out of the corner. Basically, when coming out of the last corner, they would be hugging the left side of the track heading down the straight. This would allow them to get on the throttle earlier in the corner.

Thank you for mentioning Dakar Truck category. It was really unbelievable and unthinkable moments when our trucks (that was taken as third world country crappy vehicles) with just very little modifications from their factory settings became competable with best Western Dakar specials right from their very first races and really quickly started to even beat them. Really proud moments for Czecoslovaks mechanics and drivers in late 80's and through 90's. And reason why Truck category in Dakar is our most favourite and most represented to this day here in Czech Republic. Even tho our golden era is long gone, we are still hoping for next victory for our trucks and their drivers (Tatra is still quite strong and some drivers are using foreign truck brands. Liaz is long dead tho.). Mabye next year we will finaly gain another victory. Our cars are strong and drivers quick a determinated but had a lot of misfortune for last few years. Well, just few more weeks to find out... :)

As an admirer of motorsports and an avowed socialist, I thank you for bringing me this information. I didn't have much idea how much history there was about competitive vehicles in the socialist bloc, it's admirable... It's sad that many projects didn't get off the ground, but understandable given that the central socialist state always had other concerns. As a socialist I think that the socialist state was wrong in not allowing Soviet engineers to carry out such projects. Motorsport is a technology development laboratory and if these men had support from central planning, Soviet technology could be on par with Western technology in terms of competition vehicles. Engineers' cooperatives could lead this process and with the appropriate initial investment from the state, over time these cooperative could beself-sufficient in terms of financing and produce on a sufficient scale so that these cars could reach the garages of ordinary workers. Sad that a lot of things didn't go ahead, but happy to discover that there were many attempts. What excites me today is the car market from China, the quality of cars that are coming out of there such as BYD, NIO, Huawei Xiaomi is undeniably superior to Western cars, there are electric vehicles there that easily exceed 250kmh and they cost 1/10 of what a luxury car made for unproductive billionaires in the West costs. They are leaving traditional brands desperate and quickly gaining market share in countries like Russia and Brazil. I have a very positive expectation of what the world of electric vehicles has for us in the near future.

i really love motorsport and i am from east germany, so i am very thankful for this video. i still see a lot of 353 and 601 here, and the 130RS is a beautiful Monster. For me ,the Formula cars was a little short in this video, the eastern Formulacars was pretty loud and slow, but very popular (in germany) actually. there are still E1300 Races up for people who are intrested. Also Motorbikeracing came a bit short, in east germany at least Bike Racing was more popular than cars even. Schleizer Dreieck and Sachsenring in Germany are still known as Motorcicle Circuits. Hillcimb was missing aswell, called "Bergrennen" around here. However im happy many famous cars and manufacturers got mentioned, you really did good research. At the End i'd like to say: If you ever can see a Melkus Live, go there! its slow, its loud, its smells, a wonderful car with a twin engine and 2 gearboxes. when you shifted, you had to shift both transmission, have seen a rebuild one last year.

First video i've ever watched from this channel and let me say that i'm blown away by the amount of information while you're constructing a very neat circuit. I love motorsports and i'm fascinated by socialists experiences around the globe. Always asked myself how did motorsport work in socialist country. Nice content my friend, cheers from Brazil. I'll be checking more of your content

Akruas, it's not like the Lancia Stratos was unheard of here - I am honestly wishing you will delve into a motoring topic in 80s Altengrad again, maybe with some sort of high end life style, for example: many celebrities in Poland actually had western cars like Porsches and whatnot. Actually, Porsche 911 was a quite common racecar here if someone had the buck to go with :D The Stratos here is an interesting case as well. I think it was like polish government got some (three iirc), and our prime racing driver, Andrzej Jaroszewicz was driving them, but one of them got crashed beyond repair with intact drivetrain and therefore, Stratopolonez was born

You could have a couple more stands around track for spectators. It feels a little empty in some areas at the moment but other than that it's fantastic

Coming back to Dakar and rally trucks - because of the very low budget polish crews running the STAR trucks actually used to drive trucks from Poland to Paris, then drive the rally and come back from Dakar to Poland. All done under their own power on their own wheels.

If the nuclear reactor is built near the edge of the map id love for the end of the communist era for it to have a nuclear meltdown similar to Chernobyl disaster. Imagine having editing in the disaster, having everyone leave and then having to do cleanup and containment that episode. In future episodes you can see a part of the map covered under the containment with overgrowth and abandonment. It would be extremely unique series one of a kind.

I think that, in Soviet and post-Soviet countries, rallying was the preffered motorsport. Partly I think due to cost constraints.
