Chas and I get back together to sort out the front brakes. Off camera we've replaced the front brake pads which is a simple job. However, we struggled to push the calipers back in. So, in this video we replace the front brake calipers. Is this something you can do on your own or maybe you've already done this? Let us know.

Yes, sticky pistons are trouble. Best replacing the calipers.

The importance of the caliper design change is vital. Some numpty actually did try hammering pads on to fit on my van. The friction was so bad the disc was glowing and the new pads disintegrated, leaving just the pad plate on the road. A couple of important symptoms of this. 1. Really bad brake smell at speed. 2. Ridiculous fuel consumption. 3. Reduced ability to free wheel 4. Abnormal braking range at deceleration Yes, I should have gone to have it seen too but when the same garage just give it a 12 month MOT, brakes are one thing which is not what you think it is. Thanks Garethtevlin, some great advice there but it must have been a terrible experience driving it. Some garages are just useless aren't they? Not sure why. Is it lack of training or just profit and laziness?

I've done a recondition of a caliper. definitely recommend take the hose off from the other end, closer to the body of the vehicle, just as you all do at 8:42

Thanks for this video. Great one. I was looking for such a one in regard to the dual brake line disconnection. That's the tricky part.

Yes. Remove the rust w/ phosphoric acid (works great) 50:50 acid/water and will paint them probably w/ Foliatec paint.

Great video. Really clear. I have an almost identical van, B574, W reg. Don't suppose you've got manufacturer and part no. for those callipers? Mine look identical (although can't see any wear sensors). Struggling to find some. Many thanks

remove the filler cap and put a plastic bag over the reservoir then screw the top back on . this creates a vacuum in the system and stop the fluid draining out of the system . requires a lot less bleeding.

Just out interest. Won't the cap itself be air tight? What's the bag for?

@@HermanHitstheRoad the cap has a very small breather hole to allow air to enter as the fluid level drops over time due to pad wear and to allow for expansion when the fluid gets warm.

before you start remove the master cylinder filler cap and put an old latex glove over the top then replace the cap it will stop air entering and fluid running out of the pipes.

Great idea but I think you only need to do that if you are doing it on your own.

Or the issue I’ve come across today is a larger calliper which is most likely the original fitted which should have a 22mm disc but someone has fitted the 16mm disc, all works well for last 8 years but probably doesnt offer as much heavy duty breaking or cooling as it’s a smaller disc. The disc actually split in two at the junction of the two angles huh and gave of the disk and c 2 of the pistons came out causing a fluid leak and 0 breaking. Perhaps the incorrect disc caused the pistons to come out to far as the pads wore also. Unfortunately these callipers don’t appear to be available now so looks like it’s going to have to stay on the smaller disc even though I have the 22mm ones now over from Germany🙄

Hi ads my name is barry i have a self converted fiat Ducato 2.8jtd and I have just replaced my front callipers, discs, pads, and new twin hoses + brake lines front to back also rear pads and cylinders I wish I had a chas to help me one thing I noticed on your video was the tension springs on the top of the pads were sticking out of the calliper mine went under the carrier is this right or should they stick out like on your video I’m not a mechanic just like to do my own repairs my brakes work okay now if you could ask chas please and your videos are great and very informative a really nice down to earth couple best regards barry and my dog Bob

Hi Barry, I'll ask Chas to comment but what do you mean by the "tension springs"? I don't remember there being any springs. Do you mean the carrier sliding pins? Could tell us the time in the video you see them?

Hi yes if you look at the comments I left a comment saying That i had noticed that the spring was on the outside and that i had corrected it. In summary the springs go under the caliper. Hope that helps you. Ps well noticed it means you are doing a good job 👍 Chas.

Hi Henry. MOT is not for a while. This is essential maintenance which the garage who does the MOT and service have missed.

I have a B584 from 2004. I keep having to change the front left wheel bearing. The last time 3 years and 5000 miles ago. My mechanic put on the last one a SKS made in Spain. I did the first one myself using a 100 ton press from a local truck garage, they did it in 2 minutes in front of me. Just came back from Spain and its making a hell of a noise again especially when turning left. Can you give me a clue why this may be happening?

Hi Paul, I had a similar problem with a car that I restored. Every year the front bearing would go. The problem I had was the the hub was damaged, I could see it pitted but because it was an old car and I couldn't find a replacement. We think that it could be that the hub is damaged (the hub being the shiney sticking out thing that the disc brake and the bearing fit over); or that there is dirt or swarf in the grease in the disc which works its way in to your bearings; or it could be the CV joint is damage; or if cheaper makes of bearings are used they can spin in the hub. @@HermanHitstheRoad Hm, it's not actually a motorhome. The last one I had was a coachbuilt unit based on an Austin J2 chassis. Weighed in at 2 tons and was a bit of a beast. I had to change the rear springs as the old ones were crushed. A 1622 cc Austin engine fed by a sidedraught Solex kept it fed. Until the float bowl warped and I changed the whole inlet manifold and fitted an SU. Maximum speed was 40. Fuel consumption was horrendous! Drum brakes if I remember correctly. No, the caliper I changed was on a Discovery 2. Very similar but only one brake pipe. Good vid, quite enjoyed it, 'Beauty!' In fact!

I’ve a 1997 boxer to do and I just know those horshoe clips are going to dissolve even though I undersealed the entire motor home. Then the pipes will be solid and I’ll need to put in a new brake line lol. I lubed everything up thoroughly a couple of days ago so fingers crossed, but I’ve been here before!

@@HermanHitstheRoad 7/16" on this. Yes I have extensive workshop facilities. Doesn't make the bugger shift though lol. The clips came out fine, hoses are on fair nick, but pipes going to have to be cut. I'll make new pipes up first and put them in situ, then take the old ones out the master cylinder and pop bungs in. When I've got the caliper and Flexi hoses on the bench I'll get the buggers out with heat. Don't want to damage the flexis though which is why I didn't use much heat in situ. Cheers bud.
