Motorcycling Observations #2 | Sat Nav | Find The Time To Look

Picking the correct time to look at your satnav screen is a skill that's required to do other things when operating any vehicle. Even a mirror check needs to be done without risk ahead.

As a fellow biker with older knees, I put my left foot on the left peg and use the extra elevation to mount the bike, a little like getting on a horse. With lifesavers, what a lot of less experienced riders fail to understand is that a more advanced or practiced rider is able to determine when a lifesaver is NOT required. In the same way as the choice of whether to signal or not, doing a lifesaver just because the DVSA instructor told you to in x situation is not always helpful. I'm also with you on sometimes not being eager enough to use outer lanes to make progress - not only is it quicker, its usually safer for bikes to be out and away from the impatient and the bonnet watchers. Same goes for filtering, picking when to can make your ride much safer and more enjoyable.

6:10 What a refreshing idea: accelerate on to the roundabout and then just hold a speed suitable for flow. About half of the published dashcam clips with captions like "No give way on the roundabout" would dry up.

I've never really understood using a satnav unless you're touring. One of the biggest draws to riding for me is the sense of adventure; going somewhere with no plan, taking the scenic route, getting lost discovering fun twisty roads, and just enjoying the ride. If I have to be somewhere at a specific time and I don't know the route, I'll plan in advance then take the "long way" home.

Maybe I've missed it, but I don't ever remember one of the great life-saving tips being mentioned anywhere on road videos, works whatever the vehicle and has occasionally kept me in one piece on both two and four wheels over 58 years of driving.. When watching a vehicle waiting to pull out on an upcoming junction, don't focus on the bulk of the vehicle, look at the wheels, you'll spot any movement much quicker and that couple of seconds can equate to a life-saving braking distance.

When I switched bikes, I decided not to have a sat-nav screen visible and use Waze voice-only (for a commute into London). There are some occasions where the instructions aren't completely clear, but it's got so much better recently. Definitely less distracting than looking at a screen.

rubber necking: where there is a situation to rubber neck, there is an increased risk being a biker and getting rear ended by the vehicle behind. i now tend not to look at the crash or whats happend and increase the distance to the vehicle in front and keep an eye on the vehicle behind. when i was 19 (2006) i had a close call with the car behind changing the radio station as the vehicles in front of me all slowed quickly because of a phantom tail back (just people following too close and its passes it down the traffic queue). i did leave space in front so when i heard the wheels lock up behind me, i accelerated into the extra space i made then slowed down again. once safe to stop i looked behind and the guy was so apologetic, i was ok with it and said it was fine with a hand wave and we carried on. ever since then, i look for the danger and risk expecting it to come and its a bonus if it doesnt happen. moving your mirror: if you counter steer the handle bars when getting on the bike or off the bike it can help to move the weight and make it a touch easier to get on the bike. (i will add i watched a video about it but cant remember which way to counter steer when at a stand still, i just remember if you turn the bars it helps to move the bike weight in the correct direction to help get on and less likely to move your mirror with your upper body.) other option could be to move the mirror stock a little bit more away from you if you can still get the angle correct with mirror adjustment to see behind?

Your last comment about not catapulting off at lights reminds about a downside to filtering to the front of the queue at traffic lights, you need to be aware that being first across the junction potentially puts into conflict with amber gamblers from your right in particular. Great vid again thanks.

I only use audio for sat nav, screens are too distracting. I wouldn't be against a remote device that fits in any helmet that just is a thin strip that flashes an LED on left or right side to indicate which way you should turn, or white in the centre to indicate straight on, not sure what other colours could be bit screens are over done, use more power, and create unnecessary distractions.

I too share similar getting back used to a vehicle, though it’s not a motorcycle but a car. I passed in 1988 and had been driving since until about 3 years ago where I had a blood clot and it first affected my right foot then my left foot, I couldn’t drive because my feet were very painful. About a few months ago, i have get back driving again but I had lost confidence because even though my feet had recovered especially after losing 2 toes on my left foot and 3 toes on my right foot, my feet are very sensitive and have opted to drive automatics and I feel I’m starting again but after a few driving about my confidence seems to build up slowly. This is why I know how you feel. I do very much want to learn to ride but I don’t think I maybe able to change gears or stand very long on my left foot.

looks like you have your c5 is mounted on the handle bar bracket, at the furthest point, try changing the bracket so the C5 mounts at the nearest point to you (it'll be an inch or 2 lower). you'll then get a clearer view of the bikes instruments! (I have done that with my Innovv N1-Pro)... js

I found mounting my sat nav that low to be too distracting to check, having it closer to your eyeline makes it that much easier to glance at and reference to what you're seeing in front. Glancing down felt to me too much needing to be planned, especially in the case of approaching an unfamiliar complicated junction. I've it mounted on a bar above the clocks now, and it just becomes part of the scan while using it. Also useful when I was riding on the TET and referring to a marked Track on the map. I'd aslo consider mounting that blindspot detector more in front but that's me! :D On the Lifesavers, some folks go overboard on them, if you have a good scan going and an awareness of whats around, you don't need to be whipping your head back and forth. Obviously making lane changes and moving off is important. On a BikeSafe ride the other week at the ABR the cop said to me "I have a 20 mile commute, I probably do maybe 3 shoulder checks during that, otherwise I'm relying on my scan" - not gospel but also worth considering that you should be keeping a picture of the vehicles around

I am back to biking after 30 years off. about 1800 miles into it again. I have noticed that the buffeting for me changes a lot depending on what is in front of me. Like F1 cars getting in the turbulent air from another car. So clear road and its minimal, but put a few cars and lorries in play and at 50+ it makes a lot of difference. CBR650R for reference.

4:10 I would be surprised if the front brake doesn't also operate the back brake. I think this is common on a lot of modern motorbikes; linked braking. The rear brake will do rear wheel only, but I would have thought the front would do both, with the rear being electronically activated, balanced with the front.

I heard they trialed it but for most parts the front brake is your main brake as the front always dives and the front wheel grips the tarmac as the rear lifts and at higher speeds slides. I have a Suzuki B-king 1340 cc and rarely use the rear brake, probably only time is sat at railway crossings or traffic lights 😊

Other way around - it’s much more common to have the front brake operated on its own and the “rear” brake pedal operate both with a pressure compensator/regulator valve (or simple cable pulling both levers on a moped when both brakes are on levers with no clutch or foot brake) It’s more desirable to have them totally split, but some regulations require them to be combined (iirc it’s when there’s no abs in modern bikes but could be wrong in that point)

ok, dug out the manual, looks like it has it: "All models are equipped with a partially integrated braking system, combined with the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). This partially integrated braking system is designed to increase the braking efficiency of the rider. When the rider applies the front brake, a small amount of rear brake is also applied, allowing for balancing braking. The amount of rear brake application is related to the level of braking force applied by the rider through the front brake lever. Use of the rear brake pedal alone will only apply the rear brake. For full brake effectiveness, always operate the front brake lever and rear brake pedal together." "When stopping, always apply both brakes at the same time. Normally the front brake should be applied a little more than the rear."

  • @shm5547

@@laceandwhisky if you apply some rear brake, you will avoid the front end diving so much. You should use both brakes for proper control and handling. Using the front only unbalances the machine.

In my recent experience the latest candidates for poor driving are those in the Ineos Grenadier who seem to use them as a powerful battering ram. The old Defenders were too slow to be of much concern but give those drivers something a lot more powerful......... I would be concerned about where the GoPro would go in the event of an accident. For me nothing should be attached to the helmet. Certainly extra weight on a helmet is unwanted. I would enjoy cruise control on my bike. I used to travel up and down the M1 near Luton when they had the road works and travelling at 50mph with no possibility of varying speed for 25miles was excruciatingly painful on my wrist and on one occasion I had to pull over to the hard shoulder because I couldn't stand the pain any longer. My wife spent 10 years commuting in NW up until the Pandemic and she was constantly deriding the woeful standard of driving there.

"Helmet" is the proper term for protective head gear. "Lid" refers to an ounce of a 🚬 recreational substance. Any Cheech and Chong fan would know the reference so you may wish to rethink that description 🤣🤣🤣. With reference to verbalising your actions whilst riding; no surprise that you're doing so at a lower rate. The Brain is only capable of processing a finite amount of data before things go wrong. Like your driving and attitude when you are talking about cars. Your riding skills need a lot of work. I get you are talking about all the gismos you have on the bike and seem to rely on and this misconception is what cause bikers to be involved in accidents. Better riding skills are what should happen and not rely on the gismos on the bike. The same is for riders that wear high viz and say why didn't they see me, I say they don't or can't see a fire engine what chance how you got being on a bike. My main worry with you doing bike riding videos is that you have a lot of followers that will take your feedback onboard and then go and ride according to you. When you aren't experienced enough in bike riding to teach the correct skills. Some of your followers will buy all that stuff you have on your bike and rely on it, then have a major accident because they don't know how to ride. Keep to cars for the time being, PLEASE
